Prevalence of tst, entC, entA and entA/C genes in staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from different foods

Abstract: "nBackground: Staphylococcus aureus is a major foodborne pathogen throughout the world. Enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 are important virulence factors and as pyrogenic toxin superantigens have profound effects on the ir host. Thus circulation of TSST1 producing S.aureus among people and food chain is a worrying issue. The present paper was conducted to study Prevalence of tst, entC, entA and entA/C genes in staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from different foods. "n"nMethods: Over 1040 food samples have been analyzed differentially according to Iran national standard (number= 1194) for S.aureus identification. After DNA extraction, PCR reactions were carried out by reference strain as positive control, adequate primers. "n"nResults: At present study, prevalence of foodstuffs contaminated by S.aureus isolates was about 9.5% (100 strains). Of 25% of isolates producing entC, 28% (seven strains) had tst gene at the same time and of 8% of isolates producing entA, 12.5% (one strain) were positive for tst genes simultaneously. Altogether of 9% isolates producing combination of entC and entA, 44.4% (four strains) were also producer of tst gene. "n"nConclusion: Prevalence of TSST1 producing strains in combination with enterotoxin genes is considerable especially with entC and A plus C. On the other hand, circulation of these isolates in humans, animals, foods and environment has hazardous effect for general public health.
Effects of Probiotic Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Lactobacillus Casei on the Behavior of Colorectal Tumor Cells

Abstract: Background: Probiotic microorganisms are living normal flora of human body that have nutritional value and health benefits when administered in adequate amounts. The health benefits include prevention of bacterial diarrhea, skin eczema and recently understood, prevention and control of various cancers, as well. Different mechanisms such as stimulating the immune system, modifying the composition of gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract normal flora and prevention of the carcinogenic activity of fecal enzymes have been identified for their probiotic activity. Due to the high density of the normal flora in the gut and also preferentially sporadic nature of colorectal cancers, these cancers are among the main candidates of treatment trials with probiotics. In this study, direct effects of probiotic lactobacilli on colon cancer tumor cells were studied. Methods: Supernatant fluid and bacterial extracts were prepared and CaCo-2 cells were treated by these materials. Subsequently, the effects of the aforesaid elements were evaluated on cell proliferation, cell necrosis and cell apoptosis by MTT assay, LDH assay and caspase-3 activity. Results: The supernatants of lactobacilli decreased cell proliferation and increased cell apoptosis but they did not have any effect on cell necrosis. In contrast, when cancerous cells were treated by lactobacilli extract, it lead to cell necrosis in addition to reduction in cell proliferation and increase in cell apoptosis. Conclusion: The use of lactobacillus probiotics may reduce proliferation of tumor cells in the early stages of colorectal cancers.

However, modern microsurgical reconstruction techniques have improved success rate of penile replantation and become the procedure of choice for managing these patients. Exact and Heuristic Solutions to Minimize Total Waiting Time in the Blood Products Distribution Problem

Abstract: This paper presents a novel application of operations research to support decision making in blood distribution management. The rapid and dynamic increasing demand, criticality of the product, storage, handling, and distribution requirements, and the different geographical locations of hospitals and medical centers have made blood distribution a complex and important problem. In this study, a real blood distribution problem containing 24 hospitals was tackled by the authors, and an exact approach was presented. The objective of the problem is to distribute blood and its products among hospitals and medical centers such that the total waiting time of those requiring the product is minimized. Following the exact solution, a hybrid heuristic algorithm is proposed. Computational experiments showed the optimal solutions could be obtained for medium size instances, while for larger instances the proposed hybrid heuristic is very competitive. 1. Introduction This paper presents a novel application of operations research to support decision making in blood distribution management with the objective of minimizing the total waiting time of those hospitals and medical centers requesting for blood products. The increasing demand for healthcare services coupled with their importance and higher costs make it obligatory to better utilize the medical resources and facilities. The rapid and dynamic increasing demand for blood, criticality of the product, storage, handling, and distribution requirements and limitations, and the different geographical locations of hospitals and medical centers have made blood distribution a complex and very important problem. Furthermore, increasing rate of surgeries coupled with the new advances in healthcare have magnified the complexity and importance of an efficient blood distribution system. If the right blood products are not available at the hospital and medical centers at the right time, then health issues or delays of operations may arise, which results in extra days of hospitalization and cost. Besides, overstocking blood at hospitals and medical centers leads to low utilization, as most blood products may only be used to a patient of the same blood type within 21 days of collection. For these reasons, blood must be collected regularly. Thus, any low utilization increases costs and wastes the scarce blood resource. The latter may have fatal consequences. The Study of Dose- Response Mitogenic Effect of L-dopa on the Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts Cells

Abstract: Statement of Problem: Avulsion is one of the most serious emergencies in dental office.Avulsed teeth should be stored in a medium that supports the periodontal ligament cells viability. In some clinical situations, preserving media, contained growth factors and mitogenic products may be used for repair of traumatized (Periodontal Ligament) tissues. It has been previously reported that levodopa (L-dopa) accelerates healing by increasing the growth hormone level.Purpose: In this study, the local effect of L-dopa, on human periodontal ligament fibroblast (HPLF) cells was evaluated.Materials and Methods: Samples were taken from impacted or semi-impacted third molar teeth, which didn’t show inflammatory reaction. The cells obtained from periodontal ligament of these teeth, were cultured in appropriate medium. The passage number between3-6 was taken for further experiments. The viability of HPLF cells, which treated, by Ldopa were evaluated by trypan blue dye exclusion and neutral red assay.Results: Results indicate that low concentration of L-dopa produces significant increase in number of these cells in comparison with control group. These results confirmed previous study about direct action of L-dopa on the viability of HPLF cells.Conclusion: On the basis of this study and previous reports, presence of L-dopa in preserving media may be useful in increasing the self-life transferring HPLF cells.
Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma of kidney: A rare case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Low grade mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma of kidney was newly established as a distinct renal cell carcinoma in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of 2004. Until now, less than 60 cases have been reported and the largest series represented approximately 15 patients with this type of tumor. Herein, we report a case of mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma in a 63-year-old male presented with right flank pain which was diagnosed after nephrectomy. Pathologists should consider this diagnosis and its spectrum of histopathologic features in mind to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Determining the specific activity of thymidine phosphorylase in leukocytes of patients with MNGIE and the plasma thymidine level by RP-HPLC

Abstract: "nBackground: Thymidine phosphorylase (TP) catalyses the conversion of thymidine into thymine. Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is an autosomal recessive disease which is caused by mutations in the nuclear gene encoding TP, bringing about severe impairment of TP-enzyme specific activity and accumulation of thymidine in plasma. The clinical manifestations of MNGIE are recognizable and homogenous, but not in the early stages of the disease. In patients who are suspected of having MNGIE, determination of TP-specific activity in leukocytes and thymidine levels in plasma are diagnostic. The methods that are usually used for the measurement of TP activity and plasma thymidine are not rapid or accurate enough and lack sensitivity."n "nMethods: The specific activity of TP was measured by RP-HPLC in leukocytes of both the controls and the patients exhibiting clinical features suggestive of MNGIE. Moreover, plasma thymidine was assessed by the same method."n "nResults: The patients had detectable plasma thymidine (>3 μmol/L) but it was undetectable in the healthy controls. The patients' TP-specific activity decreased to less than 5% relative to the controls (14±4 nmol/h/mg vs. 525±165 nmol/h/mg, P<0.05). A diagnostic algorithm for the definitive diagnosis of MNGIE is suggestible based on the results of this study which relies on the measurement of plasma thymidine, TP-specific activity in leukocytes, or both."n "nConclusion: In this study, we set up a sensitive and rapid assay for the evaluation of TP-specific activity by using RP-HPLC in Iran. In addition, we established reference values for TP-specific activity and plasma thymidine in the Iranian patients.

Primary Realignment of Posterior Urethral Rupture

Abstract: Introduction: We report the results of treatment of posterior urethral rupture (PUR) by primary realignment with some modifications of the technique. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, 25 patients (mean age, 33.5 years; range, 18 to 70 years) in whom PUR had been proved underwent primary urethral realignment. All patients were evaluated postoperatively for urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and urethral stricture. They were followed for a mean of 20 months (range, 9 to 27 months). Results: In 20 of 25 patients (80%), posterior urethral rupture was associated with pelvic fractures and in 2 (8%), bladder rupture also was present. None of the patients had urinary incontinence. Six patients (24%) had evidence of postoperative stricture that required urethral dilatation and/or direct vision internal urethrotomy in 2 or 3 procedures under local anesthesia. Erectile dysfunction (which all responded to sildenafil) was reported by 4 patients (16%) as a decreased quality of erection. Conclusion: We believe that primary realignment of PUR is a simple procedure associated with low morbidity. It is recommended for patients who are stable and have no other significant intra-abdominal and pelvic organ injuries.

Abstract: Mesoblastic nephroma is a rare entity in adulthood. We report a case of mesoblastic nephroma in a 35-year-old woman who presented with left flank pain. Computed tomography images favored a soft tissue mass in the upper pole of the left kidney. The lesion was excised and sent for pathological analysis. Pathological and immunohisto-chemical studies favored a diagnosis of mesoblastic nephroma.
