Effect of Acidic Catalyst on Properties of Novel Conductive Copolymer Films Made of Pyrrole and Formyl Pyrrole  [PDF]

Abstract: Effect of acidic catalysis having carboxylic acid group was studied on properties of conductive copolymer films made of pyrrole (Py) and 2-formyl pyrrole (FPy). It was noted that trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) were suitable for the preparation of copolymer films, which showed good properties in its strength and electrical conductivity of the copolymer films. When the concentration of TFA or TCA was increased in the monomer feed, the copolymerization yield became higher and the obtained films showed electrical conductivity in the range of 10–4 - 10–3 S/cm. FT-IR and UV-Vis spectra confirmed the formation of conjugate chemical structure in the copolymer film.
Photobiont Flexibility in Paramecium bursaria: Double and Triple Photobiont Co-Habitation  [PDF]

Abstract: The green ciliate, Paramecium bursaria, has evolved a mutualistic relationship with endosymbiotic green algae (photobionts). Under culture conditions, photobionts are usually unified (to be single species) within each P. bursaria strain. In most cases, the algal partners are restricted to either Chlorella variabilis or Micractinium reisseri (Chlorellaceae, Trebouxiophyceae). Both species are characterized by particular physiology and atypical group I intron insertions, although they are morphologically indistinguishable from each other or from other Chlorella-related species. Both algae are exclusive species that are viable only within P. bursaria cells, and therefore their symbiotic relationship can be considered persistent. In a few cases, the other algal species have been reported as P. bursaria photobionts. Namely, P. bursaria have occasionally replaced their photobiont partner. This paper introduces some P. bursaria strains that maintain more than one species of algae for a long period. This situation prompts speculations about flexibility of host-photo-biont relationships, how P. bursaria replaced these photobionts, and the infection theory of the group I introns.
Circulating Levels of Fatty Acid-Binding Protein Family and Metabolic Phenotype in the General Population

Abstract: Objective Fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) are a family of 14-15-kDa proteins, and some FABPs have been to be used as biomarkers of tissue injury by leak from cells. However, recent studies have shown that FABPs can be secreted from cells into circulation. Here we examined determinants and roles of circulating FABPs in a general population. Methods From the database of the Tanno-Sobetsu Study, a study with a population-based cohort design, data in 2011 for 296 subjects on no medication were retrieved, and FABP1~5 in their serum samples were assayed. Results Level of FABP4, but not the other isoforms, showed a gender difference, being higher in females than in males. Levels of all FABPs were negatively correlated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), but a distinct pattern of correlation with other clinical parameters was observed for each FABP isoform; significant correlates were alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood pressure (BP), and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) for FABP1, none besides eGFR for FABP2, age, BP, and BNP for FABP3, age, waist circumference (WC), BP, BNP, lipid variables, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and HOMA-R for FABP4, and age, WC, BP, ALT, BNP, and HOMA-R for FABP5. FABP4 is the most strongly related to metabolic markers among FABPs. In a multivariate regression analysis, FABP4 level was an independent predictor of HOMA-R after adjustment of age, gender, WC, BP, HDL cholesterol, and hsCRP. Conclusions Each FABP isoform level showed a distinct pattern of correlation with clinical parameters, although levels of all FABPs were negatively determined by renal function. Circulating FABP4 appears to be a useful biomarker for detecting pre-clinical stage of metabolic syndrome, especially insulin resistance, in the general population.

Abstract: The heat pump model utilizing Dufour effect is proposed, and studied by numerical and theoretical analysis. Numerically, we perform MD simulations of this system and measure the cooling power and the coefficient of performance (COP) as figures of merit. Theoretically, we calculate the cooling power and the COP from the phenomenological equations describing this system by using the linear irreversible thermodynamics and compare the theoretical results with the MD results.

The elementary pen-and-string method to draw ellipsis has been devised to examine planetary orbits on the basis of the Kepler’s laws. Besides qualitative features of the orbits, quantitative dependence of the orbital shape on the quantities appearing in the Kepler’s laws can also be analyzed with simple geometrical procedures. The method thus provides a relevant intermediate step to students prior to the study of the rigorous theory of central force problems.

Abstract: In this paper, we rigorously reinvestigate the effects of childhood mortality decline during different periods on human capital accumulation and economic development. For this purpose, we extend the basic framework of Azarnert (2006) by dividing childhood among three periods—early childhood (the period prior to school enrolment), school age (the school-enrolment period), and late childhood (the period posterior to school enrolment)—and assume a constant mortality rate for each period. We arrive at the following conclusions. The mortality decline after school age promotes human capital accumulation and economic development. The mortality decline after early childhood impedes human capital accumulation and economic development, but has no effect on the same after late childhood.

Abstract: Radiation induced graft polymerization on polymeric matrix followed by functionalization is widely accepted for the preparation of metal adsorbents. In this paper, a pre-irradiation method was used for emulsion graft polymerization of 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate glycidylether (4-HB) onto polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) nonwoven fabric. The degree of grafting (Dg) which can be calculated by weight increment was determined as a function of reaction time, irradiation dose, and monomer concentration. After 30 kGy irradiation, with 4-HB concentration of 5%, surfactant Span 20 of 0.5% at 40°C for 2 h, the trunk polymer was made grafted at a Dg of 135%. 4-HB-grafted PE/PP nonwoven fabric was modified by ethylenediamine (EDA) in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) as a solvent at 60°C. With a Dg of 135%, the amine group density of the adsorbent is 2.8 mmol/g. The adsorption test was carried out by batch experiment in several metal ion solutions, and the removal ratio from the EDA modified adsorbent of the metal ions is in the order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+ > Li+. Compared with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) which is a typical functional monomer for graft polymerization, 4-HB-grafted adsorbent exhibited not only better mechanical property but also higher adsorption capacity of Cu2+ and Pb2+.
Adsorbent for Arsenic(V) Removal Synthesized by Radiation-Induced Graft Polymerization onto Nonwoven Cotton Fabric  [PDF]

Abstract: A fibrous adsorbent for arsenic (As) removal was synthesized with nonwoven cotton fabric as a trunk polymer. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate phosphoric acid monomer which composed of phosphoric acid mono (50%) and di (50%) ethyl methacrylate ester was introduced with radiation-induced graft polymerization onto nonwoven cotton fabric. The degree of grafting of 130% was obtained at irradiation dose of 20 kGy with 5% of monomer solution for 2 hours reaction time at 40?C reaction temperature. After the grafted material was contacted with 10 mmol/L of zirconium (Zr) solution at pH 1, 0.38 mmol/g of Zr was loaded on phosphoric units as a functional group for As(V) removal. The resulting adsorbent was evaluated by column mode adsorption with 1 mg/L of As(V) solution at various pH with space velocity 200 h–1. The maximum capacity of As(V) adsorption was 0.1 mmol/g at pH 2.

Abstract: 2-ethylhexyl hydrogen-2-ethylhexylphosphonate (EHEP) is commonly used as a metal extractant because it has a particular affinity for rare-earth metals like Scandium (Sc). To develop a highly-selective adsorbent of Sc(III), EHEP was introduced as a functional group onto a polyethylene fabric with radiation-induced graft polymerization(RIGP). The adsorption performances for Sc(III) were evaluated with aqueous solutions containing Sc(III) and Fe(III) in bath and column tests. As a result of column test, the adsorption capacities of Sc(III) and Fe(III) until the bed volume reached 5000 were 5.22 and 0.12 mg/g, respectively. It means that the amount of collected Sc(III) by the EHEP adsorbent was approximately 44 times higher than that of Fe(III). These results indicate that the grafted adsorbent containing EHEP has an extremely high selectivity for Sc(III) adsorption.
Evaluation of Antibacterial Effect by Using a Fibrous Grafted Material Loaded Ag Ligand  [PDF]

Abstract: To obtain the safety of drinking water, an antibacterial material was prepared by loading silver (Ag) onto fibrous iminodiacetate (IDA) adsorbent, which was synthesized by radiation-induced graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate and subsequent chemical modification of the produced epoxy group to an IDA group (IDA-Ag). A total amount of loaded Ag on the IDA-Ag fabric was 0.4 mmol-Ag/g-fabric. From an observation of the IDA-Ag fabric cross section by a scanning electron microscope energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, Ag was distributed to IDA layer uniformly. As a result of evaluating antibacterial effects by the column mode water flow test with stream water, the effective Ag concentration was monitored 0.05 ppm at irrespective flow rate which was functioned to the antibacterial performance. The antibacterial effects for general bacteria were indicated until BV (BV: steam water volume/IDA-Ag fabric volume) 6000, and for colitis germ legions were completely disinfected until BV 6000.
