The seasonal cycle of interhemispheric oscillations in mass field of the global atmosphere

Abstract: Using the daily and monthly data of surface air pressure, meridional wind, radiation and water vapor from NCEP/NCAR reanalysis for the period of 1979–2006, we have examined the seasonal variations of the interhemispheric oscillations (IHO) in mass field of the global atmosphere. Our results have demonstrated that IHO as observed in surface air pressure field shows the distinct seasonal cycle. This seasonal cycle has an interhemispheric seesaw structure with comparable annual ranges of surface air pressure in the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. Mass of water vapor changes out-of-phase between the Southern and Northern Hemispheres, showing clearly a seasonal cycle with its annual range almost equivalent to annual range of the IHO seasonal cycle. Amazingly, the cross-equatorial flow is found to be induced by annual changes in water vapor mass as a response of the atmosphere to seasonal cycle of forcing from hemispheric net surface short-and long-wave radiations. The IHO seasonality exhibits its larger variations in magnitude in mid-latitudes other than in other regions of the globe. Additionally, our results also show that the global air mass is redistributed seasonally not only between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres but also between land and sea. This land-sea air mass redistribution induces a zonal pattern of surface air pressure in the Northern Hemisphere but the meridional pattern in the Southern Hemisphere.
Comparison of the Hadley cells calculated from two reanalysis data sets

Abstract: The mass stream function of mean meridional circulation is calculated from the ECMWF and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data sets using a superposition computation scheme. The comparison of results shows that the common ascending leg of the Hadley cell calculated from the ECMWF data is strong and narrow, and averagely lies more north of the equator in comparison with its counterpart from the NCEP/NCAR data, and furthermore the Hadley cell from the ECMWF data shows an obvious double-layer structure. Therefore, there are obvious differences between Hadley cells displayed by the two objective analysis data sets.

Abstract: Killer toxin from $accharomyces cerevisiae SK was isolated by ultrafiltration of culture supernatants and purified by poly(ethylene glycol). The toxin migrates as one single protein band on SDS-PAGE and its molecular weight is 15kD. The SK toxin has the greatest lethal effect on the sensitive yeast strain in the lat-lag phase. Extraction and purification of killer heretity factor(dsRNA) from SK found that M-dsRNA plasmid and L-dsRNA plasmid have different molecular lengths being 1.7kb and 4.0kb.

Abstract: 利用水平分辨率接近0.7°×0.7°、垂直方向60层的ERA-Interim再分析资料,分析了2011年夏季江淮区域水汽汇的演变及各项的贡献,研究了与水汽辐合项有关的水汽输送及相应的月平均环流和天气尺度扰动。结果表明:(1)ERA-Interim再分析资料对江淮区域夏季水汽平衡有较好的描述能力。由水汽辐合项与水汽局地变化项计算的水汽汇值和用降水与蒸发求得的水汽汇值高度一致,说明该资料可用于研究江淮区域的水汽汇。(2)2011年夏季江淮区域整体处于水汽汇区,且水汽汇值具有明显的2~6天的天气尺度振荡。降水对水汽汇的贡献远大于蒸发,而水汽辐合项与水汽局地变化项对水汽汇均有较大贡献,并且对水汽汇具有超前1~2天的指示作用。(3)月平均环流和天气尺度扰动均通过与水汽输送密切相关的水汽辐合项对江淮区域水汽汇产生显著影响。月际尺度的水汽汇变化与大尺度大气环流尤其是副高有密切关系;而江淮流域及西南地区的天气扰动对江淮区域水汽汇的天气尺度振荡起到至关重要的作用。

Abstract: This paper provides a methodology for valuing a Loan Credit Default Swap Index (LCDX) and its tranches involving both default and prepayment risks. The valuation is path dependence, where interest, default and prepayment rates are correlated stochastic processes following CIR processes. By Monte Carlo simulation, a numerical solution and team structure of tranched LCDX are obtained. Computing examples are provided.

Abstract: This paper investigates implementation of Workers Paid Annual Leave Regulations, and also analyses whether and how this regulation affects tourism consumer behaviors. The author designs questionnaires and administers them to 5884 subjects distributed throughout 7 regions in China to collect primary objective data about the situation of paid vocation and tourists’ behaviors. Based on data analysis, this research concludes that the regulation has not been implemented successfully, that people have more paid days off, they have more leisure travel and higher satisfaction with travelling, and that people who work for state-owned enterprises and public institutions enjoy more paid days off than those migrant workers and employees of private enterprises. It is therefore recommended that the Central Government should take three effective measures to promote implementation of paid leave regulations.
Gene Expression in Human Hippocampus from Cocaine Abusers Identifies Genes which Regulate Extracellular Matrix Remodeling

Abstract: The chronic effects of cocaine abuse on brain structure and function are blamed for the inability of most addicts to remain abstinent. Part of the difficulty in preventing relapse is the persisting memory of the intense euphoria or cocaine “rush”. Most abused drugs and alcohol induce neuroplastic changes in brain pathways subserving emotion and cognition. Such changes may account for the consolidation and structural reconfiguration of synaptic connections with exposure to cocaine. Adaptive hippocampal plasticity could be related to specific patterns of gene expression with chronic cocaine abuse. Here, we compare gene expression profiles in the human hippocampus from cocaine addicts and age-matched drug-free control subjects. Cocaine abusers had 151 gene transcripts upregulated, while 91 gene transcripts were downregulated. Topping the list of cocaine-regulated transcripts was RECK in the human hippocampus (FC = 2.0; p<0.05). RECK is a membrane-anchored MMP inhibitor that is implicated in the coordinated regulation of extracellular matrix integrity and angiogenesis. In keeping with elevated RECK expression, active MMP9 protein levels were decreased in the hippocampus from cocaine abusers. Pathway analysis identified other genes regulated by cocaine that code for proteins involved in the remodeling of the cytomatrix and synaptic connections and the inhibition of blood vessel proliferation (PCDH8, LAMB1, ITGB6, CTGF and EphB4). The observed microarray phenotype in the human hippocampus identified RECK and other region-specific genes that may promote long-lasting structural changes with repeated cocaine abuse. Extracellular matrix remodeling in the hippocampus may be a persisting effect of chronic abuse that contributes to the compulsive and relapsing nature of cocaine addiction.

Abstract: 以酿酒酵母两种不同类型的嗜杀菌株SK4(K1型)和ERRI(K2型)为材料,分析了不同嗜杀酵母的嗜杀特性,两株嗜杀酵母具有相互杀死作用,其嗜杀活性与菌体生长有关。SK4和ERRI的嗜杀质粒的比较表明:M1-dsRNA质粒和M2-dsRNA质粒分子量分别为1.7kb和1.5kb,两株菌的L-dsRNA质粒均为4.0kb。用高温和紫外线处理嗜杀酵母,嗜杀活性随之消失,消除菌中的M-dsRNA质粒也相应消失,嗜杀活性的消除率随菌株和消除剂的不同而变化。实验证明两株菌产生的毒素蛋白的最适嗜杀作用条件不同,最适pH和温度分别为4.8、16℃和4.0、22℃,但两种毒素蛋白均对在对数生长期的敏感细胞作用最显著。
Pitfalls in Experimental Designs for Characterizing the Transcriptional, Methylational and Copy Number Changes of Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor Genes

Abstract: Background It is a common practice that researchers collect a set of samples without discriminating the mutants and their wild-type counterparts to characterize the transcriptional, methylational and/or copy number changes of pre-defined candidate oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes (TSGs), although some examples are known that carcinogenic mutants may express and function completely differently from their wild-type counterparts. Principal Findings Based on various high-throughput data without mutation information for typical cancer types, we surprisingly found that about half of known oncogenes (or TSGs) pre-defined by mutations were down-regulated (or up-regulated) and hypermethylated (or hypomethylated) in their corresponding cancer types. Therefore, the overall expression and/or methylation changes of genes detected in a set of samples without discriminating the mutants and their wild-type counterparts cannot indicate the carcinogenic roles of the mutants. We also found that about half of known oncogenes were located in deletion regions, whereas all known TSGs were located in deletion regions. Thus, both oncogenes and TSGs may be located in deletion regions and thus deletions can indicate TSGs only if the gene is found to be deleted as a whole. In contrast, amplifications are restricted to oncogenes and thus can be used to support either the dysregulated wild-type gene or its mutant as an oncogene. Conclusions We demonstrated that using the transcriptional, methylational and/or copy number changes without mutation information to characterize oncogenes and TSGs, which is a currently still widely adopted strategy, will most often produce misleading results. Our analysis highlights the importance of evaluating expression, methylation and copy number changes together with gene mutation data in the same set of samples in order to determine the distinct roles of the mutants and their wild-type counterparts.
