Characteristics of Leakage Pollution of Longpan Road Gas Station and Its Enlightenment  [PDF]

Abstract: Geological penetrating radar combined with drilling and chemical analysis has been applied to investigate leakage pollution of Longpan Road gas station in Nanjing, China. The results indicate that radar images show strong reflection anomalies along the northeast to the gas station, characterized by contaminants or contaminant plumes spreading downstream and below. The drilling results confirmed the contents of monocyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contained in the layers of fine sands ranging from 0.60 m to 6.0 m beneath the surface mostly exceed Chinese standard severely, such as toluene and isobutylbenzene with high content at 2738 μg/kg and 64505 μg/kg, respectively. Therefore, it is considered that geological penetrating radar can be employed to investigate leakage contamination of gas stations, and remediation and administration should be conducted in the polluted soil layers and aquifers.
Novel agents and regimens for acute myeloid leukemia: 2009 ASH annual meeting highlights

Abstract: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. Over the past twenty years, the studies on the pathogenesis and prognosis of AML have made revolutionary progress. However, only one-third of adult AML can be cured even to this date. The treatment of refractory, relapsed and elderly AML remains a major challenge. In recent years, new regimens and novel agents are being studied in an effort to improve complete remission (CR) rate and overall survival. This study will review the latest advances in AML treatment and summarize the highlights from the 2009 ASH Annual Meeting.The standard induction regimen for newly diagnosed AML consists of daunorubicin (DNR) 45 mg/m2 intravenously for 3 days and cytarabine (AraC) 100 mg/m2 by continuous infusion for 7 days [1]. With this regimen 60% to 80% of young adults and 40% to 60% of older adults can achieve a CR.Several major studies, particularly Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) 9621 [2,3] and the French ALFA 9000 studies [4], have shown that higher doses of DNR (80 or 90 mg/m2) can be administered safely. Recently, there are two major prospective studies compared DNR 90 mg/m2 with 45 mg/m2 in the induction regimen. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) studied 657 AML patients between the age of 17 to 60 [5]. The study showed significantly higher CR rate for patients receiving 90 mg/m2 (70% versus 57%). More importantly, overall survival (OS) was significantly prolonged (23.7 vs 15.7 months). The Dutch-Belgium Hemato-Oncology Cooperative Group (HOVON)/Swiss Group for Clinical Cancer Research (SAKK) compared DNR 90 mg/m2 versus 45 mg/m2 in 813 patients older than 60 years [6]. The results showed that CR rate was 64% and 54% respectively, while CR rate after only one course of treatment was 52% and 35% respectively. Functional Mapping of Dynamic Traits with Robust t-Distribution

Abstract: Functional mapping has been a powerful tool in mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlying dynamic traits of agricultural or biomedical interest. In functional mapping, multivariate normality is often assumed for the underlying data distribution, partially due to the ease of parameter estimation. The normality assumption however could be easily violated in real applications due to various reasons such as heavy tails or extreme observations. Departure from normality has negative effect on testing power and inference for QTL identification. In this work, we relax the normality assumption and propose a robust multivariate -distribution mapping framework for QTL identification in functional mapping. Simulation studies show increased mapping power and precision with the distribution than that of a normal distribution. The utility of the method is demonstrated through a real data analysis.
Protein engineering of insulin: Two novel fast-acting insulins [B16Ala]insulin and [B26Ala]insulin

Abstract: Blood glucose lowering assay proved that [B16Ala]insulin and [B26Ala]insulin exhibit potency of acute blood glucose lowering in normal pigs, which demonstrates that they are fastacting insulin. Single-chain precursor of [B16Ala]insulin and [B26Ala]insulin is [B16Ala]PIP and [B26Ala]PIP, respectively, which are suitable for gene expression. Secretory expression level of the precursors in methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris was quite high, 650 mg/L and 130 mg/L, respectively. In vivo biological assay showed that the two fast-acting insulins have full or nearly full biological activity. So both [B16Ala]insulin and [B26Ala]insulin can be well developed as fast-acting insulin for clinic use.

Abstract: 江苏广阔的沿海滩涂由海陆交互作用而成,总体仍在增长,南部开发条件优于北部。依据滩涂自然属性,考虑社会、经济、资源组合、技术等因素,本着可持续发展的原则,因地制宜对滩涂开发模式进行研究,同时对各模式在开发中的优劣势及易出现问题进行了识别,对区域适宜滩涂开发模式进行了探讨。滩涂农业综合开发是江苏滩涂的传统开发模式,经验丰富,但适垦滩涂所余不多,目前宜对已有农业区进行广度和深度开发;滩涂渔业综合开发已成为目前江苏海洋经济的支撑,是今后重点发展模式;滩涂自然保护区-旅游开发和滩涂港口-工业区开发是江苏海洋经济的突破口,正在大力发展中;江苏北部沿海滩涂有着优越的条件发展盐业-海洋化工,侧重发展海洋化工,使这一传统开发焕发新的生机。农业、渔业和盐业开发成带,分据江苏沿海滩涂的中、南、北部,保护区-旅游和港口-开发区开发则呈斑状,依据资源状况,穿插于开发带中。黄海辐射沙脊群是重要的滩涂资源,滩涂养殖、港口和旅游开发前景广阔。
Theoretical Properties of Composite Likelihoods  [PDF]

The general functional form of composite likelihoods is derived by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler distance under structural constraints associated with low dimensional densities. Connections with the I-projection and the maximum entropy distributions are shown. Asymptotic properties of composite likelihood inference under the proposed information-theoretical framework are established.

Spatial Distribution and Interspecific Associations of Tree Species in a Tropical Seasonal Rain Forest of China

Abstract: Studying the spatial pattern and interspecific associations of plant species may provide valuable insights into processes and mechanisms that maintain species coexistence. Point pattern analysis was used to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of twenty dominant tree species, their interspecific spatial associations and changes across life stages in a 20-ha permanent plot of seasonal tropical rainforest in Xishuangbanna, China, to test mechanisms maintaining species coexistence. Torus-translation tests were used to quantify positive or negative associations of the species to topographic habitats. The results showed: (1) fourteen of the twenty tree species were negatively (or positively) associated with one or two of the topographic variables, which evidences that the niche contributes to the spatial pattern of these species. (2) Most saplings of the study species showed a significantly clumped distribution at small scales (0–10 m) which was lost at larger scales (10–30 m). (3) The degree of spatial clumping deceases from saplings, to poles, to adults indicates that density-dependent mortality of the offspring is ubiquitous in species. (4) It is notable that a high number of positive small-scale interactions were found among the twenty species. For saplings, 42.6% of all combinations of species pairs showed positive associations at neighborhood scales up to five meters, but only 38.4% were negative. For poles and adults, positive associations at these distances still made up 45.5% and 29.5%, respectively. In conclusion, there is considerable evidence for the presence of positive interactions among the tree species, which suggests that species herd protection may occur in our plot. In addition, niche assembly and limited dispersal (likely) contribute to the spatial patterns of tree species in the tropical seasonal rain forest in Xishuangbanna, China.

Acetylcholine Acts on Androgen Receptor to Promote the Migration and Invasion but Inhibit the Apoptosis of Human Hepatocarcinoma

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most fatal cancers. In almost all populations, males have a higher HCC rate than females. Here we sought to explore the roles and mechanisms of acetylcholine (Ach) and androgen receptor (AR) on regulating the fate determinations of HCC. Ach activated AR and promoted its expression in HCC cells. Ach enhanced HCC cell migration and invasion but inhibited their apoptosis. Ach had no obvious effects on the migration, invasion, or apoptosis in AR-negative HCC cells. Elevation of migration and invasion induced by Ach was eliminated in AR-knockdown HCC cells. In contrast, Ach stimulated the migration and invasion but suppressed apoptosis in AR over-expressed HCC cells. Additionally, AR agonist R1881 promoted the migration and invasion but reduced the apoptosis of SNU-449 cells, whereas AR antagonist casodex inhibited the migration and invasion but stimulated the apoptosis of SNU-449 cells. STAT3 and AKT phosphorylation was activated by Ach in HCC cells. Collectively, these data suggest that Ach activates STAT3 and AKT pathways and acts on AR to promote the migration and invasion but inhibit the apoptosis of HCC cells. This study thus provides novel insights into carcinogenesis of liver cancer by local interaction between neurotransmitter Ach and hormone receptor AR in HCC.
A Rebel against Colonization A Comparative Study of Cesaire’s Caliban in A Tempest with Shakespeare's Caliban in the Tempest

Abstract: This thesis makes a comparative study of French playwright Aime Cesaire’s A Tempest and Shakespeare’s The Tempest to present the conflicts between two important characters in both plays, Prospero and Caliban. By analyzing the relationship between the two characters, it is easily acknowledged that the relationship between the two characters is that of the colonizer and the colonized, which is the main theme of the two plays. However, the author points out that Cesaire’s Caliban is different from Shakespeare’s Caliban in that Cesaire’s Caliban incarnates the rebellious image of the colonized people in a more vivid way and proves to be more powerful than Shakespeare’s Caliban in their struggle against colonization for liberty, freedom, and equality.
