Study on synchrony of two uncoupled neurons under the neuron’s membrane potential stimulation  [PDF]

Abstract: The input current of two uncoupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons under different initial conditions is modulated by the membrane potential of the Hindmarsh- Rose neuron; and the synchronization characteristics of the two uncoupled neurons are discussed by analyzing their membrane potentials and their inter spike interval (ISI) distribution. Under the stimulation of the neuron’s membrane potential whose discharge pattern is period or the chaos, the two uncoupled neurons under different initial conditions, whose parameter r (the parameter r is related to the membrane penetration of calcium ion, and reflects the changing speed of the slow adaptation current) is different or the same, can realize the full synchronization (state synchronization) or discharge synchronization (phase synchronization), and can only be synchronized to the discharge pattern of the stimulation neuron. The synchronization characteristics are mainly related to the discharge pattern and the strength of the stimulation neuron’s membrane potential, and are little related to the parameter r and the initial state of the two uncoupled neurons. This investigation shows the characteristics of the neuron’s membrane potential affecting the synchronization process of neurons, and the neurons’ discharge patterns and synchronization process can be adjusted and controlled by the discharge pattern and the strength of the stimulation neuron’s membrane potential. This result is helpful to study synchronization and encode of many neurons or neural network.
Molecular Typing of Treponema pallidum: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background Syphilis is resurgent in many regions of the world. Molecular typing is a robust tool for investigating strain diversity and epidemiology. This study aimed to review original research on molecular typing of Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum) with three objectives: (1) to determine specimen types most suitable for molecular typing; (2) to determine T. pallidum subtype distribution across geographic areas; and (3) to summarize available information on subtypes associated with neurosyphilis and macrolide resistance. Methodology/Principal Findings Two researchers independently searched five databases from 1998 through 2010, assessed for eligibility and study quality, and extracted data. Search terms included “Treponema pallidum,” or “syphilis,” combined with the subject headings “molecular,” “subtyping,” “typing,” “genotype,” and “epidemiology.” Sixteen eligible studies were included. Publication bias was not statistically significant by the Begg rank correlation test. Medians, inter-quartile ranges, and 95% confidence intervals were determined for DNA extraction and full typing efficiency. A random-effects model was used to perform subgroup analyses to reduce obvious between-study heterogeneity. Primary and secondary lesions and ear lobe blood specimens had an average higher yield of T. pallidum DNA (83.0% vs. 28.2%, χ2 = 247.6, p<0.001) and an average higher efficiency of full molecular typing (80.9% vs. 43.1%, χ2 = 102.3, p<0.001) compared to plasma, whole blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. A pooled analysis of subtype distribution based on country location showed that 14d was the most common subtype, and subtype distribution varied across geographic areas. Subtype data associated with macrolide resistance and neurosyphilis were limited. Conclusions/Significance Primary lesion was a better specimen for obtaining T. pallidum DNA than blood. There was wide geographic variation in T. pallidum subtypes. More research is needed on the relationship between clinical presentation and subtype, and further validation of ear lobe blood for obtaining T. pallidum DNA would be useful for future molecular studies of syphilis.
HIV Incidence among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China: A Meta-Analysis of Published Studies

Abstract: Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) have now become one of the priority populations for prevention and control of HIV pandemic in China. Information of HIV incidence among MSM is important to describe the spreading of the infection and predict its trends in this population. We reviewed the published literature on the incidence of HIV infection among MSM in China. Methods We identified relevant studies by use of a comprehensive strategy including searches of Medline and two Chinese electronic publication databases from January 2005 to September 2010. Point estimate of random effects incidence with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of HIV infection was carried out using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Subgroup analyses were examined separately, stratified by study design and geographic location. Results Twelve studies were identified, including three cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies. The subgroup analyses revealed that the sub-overall incidence estimates were 3.5% (95% CI, 1.7%–5.3%) and 6.7% (95% CI, 4.8%–8.6%) for cohort and cross-sectional studies, respectively (difference between the sub-overalls, Q = 5.54, p = 0.02); and 8.3% (95% CI, 6.9%–9.7%) and 4.6% (95% CI, 2.4%–6.9%) for studies in Chongqing and other areas, respectively (difference between the sub-overalls, Q = 7.58, p<0.01). Syphilis infection (RR = 3.33, p<0.001), multiple sex partnerships (RR = 2.81, p<0.001), and unprotected receptive anal intercourse in the past six months (RR = 3.88, p = 0.007) represented significant risk for HIV seroconversion. Conclusions Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that HIV incidence is substantial in MSM in China. High incidence of HIV infection and unique patterns of sexual risk behaviors in this population serve as a call for action that should be answered with the innovative social and public health intervention strategies, and development of biological prevention strategies.
Black block skipping lossless compression algorithm for dither halftone image

Abstract: This paper presented a black block skipping lossless compression method for ordered dither halftone image. With the characteristics analysis of dither halftone image, it designed the preprocessor for halftone image which was consisted by sub-blocks and XOR calculation. After the pretreatment, it converted halftone image into binary image where isolated white pixel surrounded by large area of black pixels, then compressed binary image by black block skipping coding. In the black block skipping coding, used the specific short code word in only a white pixel of non-black block, and used direct coding in the remaining types of non-black block. The experimental results show that improved black block skipping coding can get effective compression for non-black block in a certain extent. In addition, the new algorithm can get good compression efficiency, time and space complexity of algorithm is low.

Abstract: Physical and chemical properties of titanium oxynitride (TiOxNy) formed by low-temperature oxidation of titanium nitride (TiN) layer are investigated for advanced metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) gate dielectric application. TiOxNy exhibits polycrystalline properties after the standard thermal process for MOS device fabrication, showing the preferred orientation at 200]. Superior electrical properties of TiOxNy can be maintained before and after the annealing, probably due to the nitrogen incorporation in the oxide bulk and at the interface. Naturally formed transition layer between TiOxNy and SiO2 is also confirmed.
Effects of Antennas and Propagation Channels on Synchronization Performance of a Pulse-Based Ultra-Wideband Radio System

Abstract: Synchronization performance of a pulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB) system is investigated by taking into account of distortions caused by transmitter and receiver antennas and wireless propagation channels in different environments. The synchronization scheme under consideration can be achieved in two steps: a slide correlator and a phase-locked loop (PLL)-like fine tuning loop. Effects of the non-idealities are evaluated by analyzing the distortion of the received UWB pulse and subsequently the synchronization performance of the pulse-based UWB system. It is found that generally a smaller step is required for the sliding correlator due to distortions introduced by the antennas and channels. However, the fine tuning loop can always be stabilized by adjusting the loop parameters. Therefore, synchronization can always be achieved.
Limit sets and commensurability of Kleinian groups

Abstract: In this paper, we obtain several results on the commensurability of two Kleinian groups and their limit sets. We prove that two finitely generated subgroups $G_1$ and $G_2$ of an infinite co-volume Kleinian group $G \subset \Isom(\mathbf{H}^3)$ having $\Lambda(G_1) = \Lambda(G_2)$ are commensurable. In particular, it is proved that any finitely generated subgroup $H$ of a Kleinian group $G \subset \Isom(\mathbf{H}^3)$ with $\Lambda(H) = \Lambda(G)$ is of finite index if and only if $H$ is not a virtually fiber subgroup.

Abstract: In order to improve the estimation precision of inverse halftoning values whose halftone patterns don't appear in image training set,an inverse halftoning method based on look up table(LUT) and Elman recurrent network is proposed.Firstly the preliminary LUT is built from image training set.Then the Elman recurrent network is used to approximate the mapping between halftoning and inverse halftoning.After studying,training and optimizing the structure,layers and nodes of the Elman network are established appropriately.With this network the continuous-tones of nonexistent halftone patterns are estimated.And the complete LUT is generated.Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can generate inverse halftoning images of good in both visual effect and PSNR while having low memory requirement and inexpensive computation than some of existing algorithms.

Abstract: The polymeric title compound, [Ca(C6H2N2O4)(H2O)]n, was synthesized from pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid and calcium dichloride under hydrothermal conditions. The Ca2+ cation is seven-coordinated by five O atoms and one N atom of four pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate anions, and one water molecule. The complete deprotonated pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate anion adopts a μ4-coordination mode, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional structure.
