Pragmatic Functions of Anti-Pre-Emptive Use of Person Deixis and Pre-Emptive Use of Social Deixis in Chinese  [PDF]

Abstract: Pre-emptive use of deixis involves speakers’ psychological tendency towards using deixis to pre-empt the non-deictic ways of referring to the relevant person, time or place, while anti-pre-emptive use of deixis refers to the phenomenon of non-deictic words substituting deixis. Both the pre-emptive use and anti-pre-emptive use of deixis produce significant pragmatic functions in language communication. This paper discusses the anti-pre-emptive use of person deixis and the pre-emptive use of social deixis in Chinese and concludes that their pragmatic functions are of the same nature.
An Examination of the Effects of Aerosol ChemicalComposition and Size on Radiative Properties of Multi-Component Aerosols  [PDF]

Abstract: The sensitivity of aerosol radiative properties (i.e., scattering coefficient, extinction coefficient, single scatter albedo, and asymmetry factor) and radiation transmission to aerosol composition, size distributions, and relative humidity (RH) is examined in this paper. Mie calculations and radiation calculations using a tropospheric visible radiation model are performed. The aerosol systems considered include inorganic and organic ions (e.g., Cl-, Br-, , , Na+, , K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, HCOO-, CH3COO-, CH3CH2COO-, CH3COCOO-, OOCCOO2-, MSA1-), and (2) water-insoluble inorganic and organic compounds e.g., (black carbon, n-alkanes, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and other organic compounds). The partial molar refraction method and the volume-average method are used to calculate the real and imaginary parts of refractive index of real aerosols, respectively. The sensitivity simulations show that extinction coefficient increases by 70% when RH varies from 0 to 80%. Both extinction coefficient and asymmetry factor increase by ~48% when real part varies from 1.40 to 1.65. Scattering coefficient and single scattering albedo decrease by 18% and 24%, respectively, when the imaginary part varies from –0.005 to –0.1. Scattering and extinction coefficients increase by factors of 118 and 123, respectively, when the geometric mean radius varies from 0.05 to 0.3 ?m. Scattering and extinction coefficients and asymmetry factor increase by factors of 389, 334, and 5.4, respectively, when geometric standard deviation varies from 1.2 to 3.0. The sensitivity simulations using a tropospheric visible radiation model show that the radiation transmission is very sensitive to the change in geometric mean radius and standard deviation; other factors are insignificant.

Abstract: This paper investigates the collective behavior of a class of dynamic agents with time delay in transmission networks. It is assumed that the agents are Lyapunov stable distributed on a plane and their location coordinates are measured by some remote sensors with certain error and transmitted to their neighbors. The control protocol is designed on the transmitted information by a linear decentralized law. The coordination of dynamical agents is shown under the condition that the error is small enough. Numerical simulations demonstrate that our theoretical results are effective.

Abstract: The ip-iq detection method based on instantaneous inactive power theory has been applied widely in active power filter because of its good real-time. But it needs large computation, and three-phase currents are processed as integrity, thus calculation accuracy can't be ensured. Based on adaptive interference canceling theory, this paper presents a new ad- aptive detection method for harmonic current, it is a continuously regulated closed-loop system, and its operating characteristics are almost independent of the parameter variations of the elements, thus it performs better than that based on traditional theory. At last this paper provides the simulation of active power filter including the detecting cir-cuit which proved the design is feasible and correct.
Average Consensus in Networks of Multi-Agent with Multiple Time-Varying Delays  [PDF]

Abstract: The average consensus in undirected networks of multi-agent with both fixed and switching topology coupling multiple time-varying delays is studied. By using orthogonal transformation techniques, the original system can be turned into a reduced dimensional system and then LMI-based method can be applied conveniently. Convergence analysis is conducted by constructing Lyapunov-Krasovskii function. Sufficient conditions on average consensus problem with multiple time-varying delays in undirected networks are obtained via linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. In particular, the maximal admissible upper bound of time-varying delays can be easily obtained by solving several simple and feasible LMIs. Finally, simulation examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Abstract: Infant mortality rate (IMR) has been viewed as the vital index which can be used to measure the health level of a country or a district, and also can indirectly illustrate the economic development level of the country or district. In this paper, the authors 1) introduce three calculation methods of IMR and compare the differences among them; 2) calculate the IMR using one method above, and find the IMRs recorded in China Population Statistic Yearbook (CPSY) from National Statistics Institute and in China Health Statistic Yearbook from Ministry of National Hygiene are both overestimated; 3) point out three main reasons for this overestimation: firstly, confusion of methods of calculation and concepts, secondly, inconsistent statistical caliber among different yearbooks, thirdly, flaws within the registration system.
Energy Band Analysis of MQW Structure Based on Kronig-Penny Model  [PDF]

The effects of different potential well depths, well widths and barrier widths on energy band of multiple quantum well (MQW) structures are discussed in detail based on Kronig-Penny model. The results show that if the well and barrier width stay unchanged, the first and second band gaps increase linearly with the well depth. When the well depth is constant, the first and second band gaps increase exponentially with the barrier width in a wide well. However, in narrow well one, the second band gap saturates when the barrier width is wide enough. On condition that the well and barrier have equal width, the first band gap decreases exponentially with well-barrier width while the second gap still shows an exponential increase with the width. These results are insightful for the design of MQW structure optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: Based on the Eviews software and panel data of Guangzhou city, Shenzhen city and Zhuhai city, the study investigated the dynamic relationship between regional tourism and economic growth, using the methods including Cointegration Test, Granger Causality Test, VAR models and Variance Decomposition. The study result shows that there are long-term mutual effects between regional economic growth and regional tourism industry in each area. And in each area, the local GDP, Earning from International Tourism (EIT) and Earning from Domestic Tourism (EDT) have cointegration relationship. Moreover, in one certain area, the contribution rate of different factors to fluctuation of one variable changes over time.
Comparison of Single-Payer and Non Single-Payer Health Care Systems: A Study of Health Administration Efficiency  [PDF]

Abstract: The United States spends nearly twice as much per capita on health care as several OECD countries. Based on previous research, universal health care decreases the total health care expenditure due to the single-payer system; it is still unknown whether a mixed health care system has superiority. In this study, we compare and evaluate both quality of care and administrative costs among six developed countries, upon three groups: single-payer universal health care system (Australia and Canada), two-tier health care system (France and Japan), and insurance mandate health care system (Switzerland and the US). The results show that both single-payer system and two-tier system are superior to insurance mandate system on health insurance administration costs. Also, regarding insurance mandate system, the healthcare system in Switzerland is more efficient than that in the US. So, we conclude that it is possible for the US to choose a diverse healthcare system, instead of focusing on one system, to trim the healthcare administration cost and improve the quality of care for the entire country.

Abstract: Objective: Our previous studies have revealed that ferulic acid (FA) and sodium ferulate (SF) show significant protective effect on excitotoxicity, the present study was conducted to compare its potential favorable effects of maternal,newborn,and both maternal and newborn intraperitoneal (ip) injection of SF on repair following excitotoxic neuronal damages induced by monosodium glutamate (MSG). Methods: The maternal mice were assigned randomly into seven groups (n = 10 animals in each group): control, 3SF, 20SF, 23SF, MSG, MSG + 3SF, MSG + 20SF, MSG + 23SF groups. The mice at 17 days of pregnancy were treated with or without MSG (2.0 g/kg body weight, ig, once) or/and SF (40 mg/kg body weight, ip), and their offerings treated with or without SF. And then their filial behaviors and hippocampal histopathology were studied. Results: The results showed that maternal, newborn, and both maternal and newborn administration of SF facilitated their filial brain repair, and attenuated the behavioral disorders and histopathological damages of their filial mice in MSG + 3SF, MSG + 20SF, and MSG + 23SF groups in varying degrees. However, the best effects were detected in the filial mice in MSG + 23SF group. Conclusion: Both maternal and newborn administration of SF is conducive to the filial neuronal repair following excitotoxic damages induced by glutamate.
