The risk of contamination with Toxoplasma gondii via blood transfusion is increased by the incidence of this parasite in donors and its tolerance to blood processing and storage processes, which turns it into a hazard for risk groups. This disease is not notifiable in Cuba. The interest in learning about the epidemiological behavior of this parasitosis led us to study 562 blood donor samples from the province of Guantánamo, 47.0 % of which tested positive for anti-T. gondii IgG, with over 62 % positivity in the municipalities of Baracoa and Maisí, and higher prevalence in rural areas. Neither the seropositivity values found in the age groups studied nor their sex distribution were significant, though contact with the parasite was higher in the 18-40 age group. These seroepidemiological data point to the need to propose control actions for the use of blood products in risk groups.
Tanedori of Taketomi Island: Intergenerational Transmission of Intangible Heritage.
Goya Junko
International Journal of Intangible Heritage , 2011,
Abstract: This paper examines performing arts as Intangible Cultural Properties, and considers their transmission, focusing on the case of Tanedori of Taketomi Island (hereafter Tanedori) one of the Important Intangible Folk cultural Properties of Taketomi-cho in Okinawa Prefecture. In particular, it focuses on the importance of the mutual relationship between local communities and schools. Tanedori refers to the ritual of planting rice or millet. In the past this ritual was performed all over Okinawa Prefecture. Tanedori faces the same sort of challenges as many other intangible heritage activities - lack of people to carry on the tradition and a declining and aging local population. This paper provides a case study on the role schools can play, through the active engagement of teachers and principals with the local communities, in the transmission of ritual performances
Evaluation of Mandibular Third Molar Positions in Various Vertical Skeletal Malocclusions
Fahimeh Farzanegan,Ali Goya
Journal of Dental Materials and Techniques , 2012,
Abstract: Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the position of mandibular third molar (M3) and vertical skeletal malocclusions. Methods: Materials for the study consisted of panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms of 73 fifteen to nineteen-year-old class I patients (girls=66%, boys= 34%). Patients were classified into three groups based on four vertical cephalometric indices: FMA, PFH/AFH, LAFH/TAFH, and Y-axis. Analysis of the position of mandibular M3 and its relation to the bone and other teeth were determined by three variables on panoramic view: evaluation of the space for mandibular M3, vertical position of the mandibular M3 in relation to occlusal plane, and spatial relationship between the mandibular second molar (M2) and M3. Results: In girls, there was a significant relationship between the retromolar space in both sides of the jaw and different vertical skeletal malocclusions (P<0.001 and P=0.001, respectively). In boys, significant relationship existed between the retromolar space in both sides of the jaw, spatial relationship between the mandibular M2 and mandibular M3 in the left side of the jaw and various vertical skeletal malocclusions (P=0.021, P=0.026, and P=0.017, respectively). Conclusion: The present study showed significant correlation between the retromolar space and various vertical skeletal malocclusions in boys and girls.
Magnetic Interactions in Ball-Milled Spinel Ferrites
Gerardo F. Goya
Physics , 2011,
Abstract: Spinel Fe3O4 nanoparticles have been produced through ball milling in methyl-alcohol (CH3OH), aiming to obtain samples with similar average particle sizes and different interparticle interactions. Three samples having Fe3O4/CH3(OH) mass ratios R of 3 %, 10 % and 50 % wt. were milled for several hours until particle size reached a steady value ( ~ 7-10 nm). A detailed study of static and dynamic magnetic properties has been undertaken by measuring magnetization, ac susceptibility and M\"ossbauer data. As expected for small particles, the Verwey transition was not observed, but instead superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior was found with transition to a blocked state at TB ~ 10-20 K. Spin disorder of the resulting particles, independent of its concentration, was inferred from the decrease of saturation magnetization MS at low temperatures. For samples having 3% wt. of magnetic particles, dynamic ac susceptibility measurements show a thermally activated Arrhenius dependence of the blocking temperature with applied frequency. This behaviour is found to change as interparticle interactions begin to rule the dynamics of the system, yielding a spin-glass-like state at low temperatures for R = 50 wt.% sample.
Space-time defects and teleparallelism
J. W. Maluf,A. Goya
Physics , 2001, DOI: 10.1088/0264-9381/18/23/310
Abstract: We consider the class of space-time defects investigated by Puntigam and Soleng. These defects describe space-time dislocations and disclinations (cosmic strings), and are in close correspondence to the actual defects that arise in crystals and metals. It is known that in such materials dislocations and disclinations require a small and large amount of energy, respectively, to be created. The present analysis is carried out in the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR). We evaluate the gravitational energy of these space-time defects in the framework of the TEGR and find that there is an analogy between defects in space-time and in continuum material systems: the total gravitational energy of space-time dislocations and disclinations (considered as idealized defects) is zero and infinit, respectively.

Superparamagnetic Transition and Local Disorder in CuFe2O4 Nanoparticles
G. F. Goya,H. R. Rechenberg
Physics , 2013, DOI: 10.1016/S0965-9773(98)00133-0
Abstract: We present X-ray diffraction (XRD), M\"ossbauer spectroscopy (MS) and d.c. magnetization measurements performed on ball-milled CuFe2O4 samples. The average particle size was found to decrease to the nanometer range after t=15 min of milling. Room temperature M\"ossbauer data showed that the fraction of particles above the blocking temperature TB increases with milling time, and almost complete superparamagnetic samples are obtained for = 7(2) nm. Magnetization measurements below TB suggest spin canting in milled samples. The values of saturation moment mu_S reveal that site populations are slightly affected by milling. M\"ossbauer resonant intensities are accounted for on the basis of local disorder of Fe3+ environments, and the development of sample inhomogeneities of CuxFe3-xO4 composition.
