Drought risk assessment of China’s mid-season paddy

Abstract: China has the world’s largest population and a large and critically important agricultural sector. Sixty-five percent of the Chinese population lives on paddy rice. However, drought disasters frequently afflict China’s rural population and threate n its food security. It is therefore of paramount importance to assess the drought risk of paddy in China. We establish a quantitative risk assessment model for the drought risk of mid-season paddy and regional-specific vulnerability curves, evaluate the drought risk of mid-season paddy, and compile a series of risk maps. The drought disaster risk rating results indicate that risk is highest in Northeast China, followed by Northwest China, North China, and South China, showing a decreasing trend from north to south. The mid-season paddy area of Northeast China has the highest mean risk index (0.58–0.71), followed by northwestern provinces such as Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang (0.5–0.6), while risk indices in provinces of North China such as Hebei and Shandong range from 0.3–0.5, and the southern provinces show a relatively low level of risk. This article presents the preliminary results of a scientific inquiry on where the high drought risk areas of mid-season paddy are and how high the risk is. These results provide a regional-specific basis for drought risk governance of paddy in China.

Abstract: The molecular mechanisms by which dense core vesicles (DCVs) translocate, tether, dock and prime are poorly understood. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans was used as a model organism to study the function of Rab proteins and their effectors in DCV exocytosis. RAB-27/AEX-6, but not RAB-3, was found to be required for peptide release from neurons. By analyzing the movement of DCVs approaching the plasma membrane using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, we demonstrated that RAB-27/AEX-6 is involved in the tethering of DCVs and that its effector rabphilin/RBF-1 is required for the initial tethering and subsequent stabilization by docking.

Abstract: Cooperative innovation of heterogeneous population is more and more important in regional innovation ecosystem, and cross-border cooperation has become one of the effective ways to break through the predicament of ecological niche development. However, the existence of opportunistic behavior will restrain the cooperation motivation among the main communities and threaten the stability of the ecosystem population cooperation network. In order to avoid possible speculation, participants tend to make commitments beforehand. However, how can the commitment effectively avoid partner speculation so as to improve cooperation performance? In this paper, we will study the community game strategy of main body in innovation under multivariate uncertainty, and analyze the impact of commitment on collaborative innovation action.
Researches on the Duality Innovation Strategies for Scientific Small and Medium Enterprises  [PDF]

The realization path and mode selection issues for the duality innovation of the scientific small and medium enterprises (SMEs) haven’t obtained a good settlement in China. With the questionnaire investigation and layered regression analysis for 292 scientific SMEs, this paper carried out researches on the realization path and mode selection for the duality innovation for scientific SMEs. The results show that relying purely on the interior path and correspondent paths to realize the duality innovation has no significant lifting functions for the enterprises’ performance, relying purely on the exterior paths and correspondent modes to realize the duality innovation will pose harms to the enterprises’ performance, and by taking the interactive paths between the interior path and exterior path to realize the duality innovation has significant lifting functions for the enterprises’ performance. The duality innovation mode with the interior development innovation and the exterior exploration innovation under this path is lifting the enterprises’ performance to the greatest extent.
Hierarchical Hypercube Based Pairwise Key Establishment Scheme for Sensor Networks  [PDF]

Abstract: Security schemes of pairwise key establishment, which enable sensors to communicate with each other se-curely, play a fundamental role in research on security issue in wireless sensor networks. A general frame-work for key predistribution is presented, based on the idea of KDC (Key Distribution Center) and polyno-mial pool schemes. By utilizing nice properties of H2 (Hierarchical Hypercube) model, a new security mechanism for key predistribution based on such model is also proposed. Furthermore, the working per-formance of tolerance resistance is seriously inspected in this paper. Theoretic analysis and experimental fig-ures show that the algorithm addressed in this paper has better performance and provides higher possibilities for sensor to establish pairwise key, compared with previous related works.
Encoding Organizational Source and Associative Source under Incidental and Intentional Learning Conditions  [PDF]

The present study aimed at providing a plausible answer for the controversy whether organizational source or associative source could be encoded in a more automatic manner through incidental learning. In the experiment, subjects were asked to learn organizational and associative sources under incidental or intentional learning conditions. It turned out that only associative source accuracy increased when subjects were instructed to intentionally learn that source, which implied that associative source might be encoded in a more effortful way, whereas processing of organizational source might be performed incidentally.

A Summary of Optimal Methods for the Planning of Stand-alone Microgrid System  [PDF]

This paper describes the characteristics and optimal methods for the planning of stand-alone microgrid system, in order to improve the power supply reliability, increase the coefficient of utilization of renewable energy and reduce the cost of investment and operation. Next, the problems in the optimal planning for a stand-alone microgrid system are summarized, including the unique operational control targets, the flexible combination approaches and the operation strategies of distributed generation energy supply system, and the special requirements of the reliability of power supply quality factor from the different users. And then, centering on the operational control and the advanced energy management strategy, the optimal mathematical models and the solving methods, the reliability assessment approaches and the improvement measures of a stand-alone microgrid system, an overview of the general situation of the recent research at home and abroad and the limitations of the study are summarized. Finally, several problems, existing in the optimal planning of stand-alone microgrid system, to be urgently solved, are put forward.

Fertility Preferences of the Post-1980s Generation in Urban China  [PDF]

Abstract: Born under the one-child policy and growing up in an environment of tremendous socioeconomic change, the post-1980s generation of China tends to have interesting fertility preferences. This study explores the fertility desire, gender preference, and potential utilization of fetal ultrasound among the post-1980s individuals in urban China, based on a survey conducted in Beijing and Puyang, China. The ideal number of children among the post-1980s was substantially lower than the replacement level. 26% of the respondents considered China’s family planning policies as the most important determinant of their fertility desire, whereas 57% of the respondents indicated economic factors as the major determinant. With respect to gender preference, nearly half of the respondents who desired one child indicated no preference, and 79% of those who desired two children preferred 1 boy and 1 girl. In terms of potential utilization of ultrasound, the large majority of the respondents indicated an intention to use ultrasound to check the wellness of the fetus. Nearly half of them wanted to know the gender of the fetus via ultrasound examination, which is illegal in China. The findings imply that urban China has been experiencing a transition from a top-down governmental promoted fertility decline to a bottom-up individual voluntary choice of low fertility. In the context of below replacement fertility and population ageing, step-by-step relaxations of the family planning policies may lead to a small, gradual, and beneficial fertility increase.
Empirical Identity as an Indicator of Theory Choice  [PDF]

Abstract: There are many theories about theory choice in philosophy of science, but no any indicator of scientific theory has been precisely defined, let alone a united index system. By the example of empirical identity, I shall show that a range of scientific indicators to decide theory choice can be precisely defined by some basic concepts. I think that these indicators can provide us a better description of the principles of philosophy of science. The certain pursuit of theories’ empirical identity and novelty leads the cumulative view of scientific progress; under non-cumulative circumstance, it is totally practicable to judge a theory’s empirical identity as well as empirical novelty; empirical identity underdetermines the acceptance of a particular theory. It is possible that all the principles of philosophy of science could be explained again through the system of index of theory choice, thus a more rigorous theory of philosophy of science could be established.
Analysis on Pollution Factors of Urban River  [PDF]

Main pollutants of the urban scenic river in Nanjing City are studied in this paper. In the study area a total of 39 monitoring points are set in natural water, around pumping stations and near the tail water of sewage treatment plant. Through the monitoring of pollution sources of receiving conventional index, the pollution sources distribution and river pollution factors are detailed analyzed, as nutrient salts, heavy metals, and environmental endocrine disruptors. And sources of the pollution factors are analyzed by principal component analysis to get the main pollution factors in this channel.
