Effects of microgravity environment on intracellular signal transduction pathways

Abstract: Microgravity environment is a stress and extracellular signal that affects cellular morphology and function through signal transduction system, thus leading to certain biological effect. At present, many signaling pathways have been reported to be involved in the regulation of cell function under microgravity environment, such as NF-κB signaling pathway, Notch signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, HSP signaling pathway and so on, and these reports have laid a foundation for the molecular studies of cytolergy under outer space environment. The recent progress in the researches on intracellular signaling pathways affected by microgravity is herewith reviewed in present paper in the hope of providing references for understanding the cell activity in space environment, and to find the ways to alleviate the harmful effects caused by the microgravity environment.

Abstract: Ginsenoside Rh2 (G-Rh2) has been shown to induce apoptotic cell death in a variety of cancer cells. However, the details of the signal transduction cascade involved in G-Rh2-induced cell death is unclear. In this manuscript we elucidate the molecular mechanism of G-Rh2-induced apoptosis in human hepatoma SK-HEP-1 cells by demonstrating that G-Rh2 causes rapid and dramatic translocation of both Bak and Bax, which subsequently triggers mitochondrial cytochrome c release and consequent caspase activation. Interestingly, siRNA-based gene inactivation of caspase-8 effectively delays caspase-9 activation and apoptosis induced by G-Rh2, indicating that caspase-8 also plays an important role in the G-Rh2-induced apoptosis program. Taken together, our results indicate that G-Rh2 employs a multi pro-apoptotic pathway to execute cancer cell death, suggesting a potential role for G-Rh2 as a powerful chemotherapeutic agent.
Overview of Data Management in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks are data-centric networks in nature,they deal with continuous data streams collected by sensor nodes. Therefore, existing data management technologies view wireless sensor network as a distributed database system composed of continuous data streams which come from the physical world. Due to the limitations of Sensor nodes' computing power, storage capacity, communication capabilities and battery energy, combined with the characteristics of flash memory and data streams,these lead to some challenges that the traditional distributed database systems have not encountered for data managements.This paper introduced the database system architecture, data storage and index technologies, data models, and query processing and optimization technologies for wireless sensor networks.

Bioassays on selection and feeding responses of Holotrichia oblita adults to different plant species

Abstract: Bioassays on selection and feeding responses of Holotrichia oblita adults to different plant species were conducted both in laboratory and under field conditions. The selection response bioassay showed that the adults were significantly attracted to Ricinus communis. In paired tests of the field cages, more than 60% adults were attracted to R. communis plants, while only 35.55%, 34.45%, 33.35%, and 26.65% were attracted to plants of Glycine max, Arachis hypogaea, Ipomoea batatas, and Gossypium hirsutum, respectively. In the laboratory, the selection response percentage of the adults to R. communis leaves reached up to 93% in the presence of other host plant leaves and still arrived at 70% in the absence of other host plant leaves. Feeding deterrence bioassay showed that the adults preferred to I. batatas leaves with 229.90 ± 4.25 mg leaf consumption and 41.30 ± 5.19 mg faeces excretion after 12 h, followed by the leaves of G. hirsutum and A. hypogaea. The adult did not prefer leaves of R. communi with only 7.10 ± 0.23 mg leaf consumption and corresponding 4.00 ± 0.84 mg fecal excretion. In summary, all experimental results suggested that the attraction of H. oblita adults to R. communi is not triggered for feeding.
Properties of a triphenylmethane dyes decolorization enzyme (TpmD) from Aeromonas hydrophila strain DN322

Abstract: A novel bacterial enzyme for decolorization of triphenylmethane dyes from Aeromonas hydrophila strain DN322 was purified and named TpmD.The basic properties of this enzyme including molecular weight,isoelectric point Km as well as the optimum temperature and pH were determined and the enzyme was identified as an NADH/NADPH-dependent oxygenase in previous research.Based on previous results,the effect of different inhibitor including Vc,metyrapone,rotenone,antimycin A and NaN-3 as well as the effect of FAD and FMN on the activity of TpmD were measured.The results indicated that the activity of the decolorization enzyme was inhibited by Vc and metyrapone in a concentration-dependent manner,but wasn't inhibited by rotenone,antimycin A and NaN-3.The activity of the decolorization enzyme was not enhanced by addition of FAD or FMN.The solution of the enzyme protein displayed only a single peak at 408nm in the Soret region,a characteristic peak of porphyrin,but did not show the characteristic peak of the cytochrome P450 proteins at 450nm in sodium dithionite(DTN)-reduced enzyme solution after treatment with carbon monoxide.The amino acid sequence of N-terminal of TpmD provided further evidence that the enzyme is an oxygenase.All these results suggest that decolorization enzyme TpmD is a new hemo-containing oxygenase.The decolorization enzyme would be a good material for further research of the enzymological mechanism of triphenylmethane dyes decolorization by bacteria.
Study on the Biofilm Characteristics in Biotricking Filter Treating Odour Gas with Large Flow and Low Concentration

Abstract: 采用内装塑料片、塑料丝、海绵块的中空鱼网状塑料球为填料的生物滴滤池,对某垃圾压缩站产生的低浓度大风量的含氨臭气进行了近1年的连续脱臭试验。研究了有关的净化效果与生物膜特性。在进口氨气浓度0.8mg/m3~1.5mg/m3,风量8000m3/h,停留时间2.5s,氨气去除率为90%以上,达到国家一级排放水平。系统添加营养液时净化效果从75%提高到90%。3种填料的生物膜量、脱氢酶活性及硝化活性速率的排列顺序是:塑料片>塑料丝>海绵,并从工艺及填料方面探讨进一步提高净化效果的技术措施。
Recent Developments in Biological Waste Gas Purification

Abstract: Biological treatment provides an cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative for many waste gas emissions.Biological waste air treatment is achieved at ambient temperatures,it does not generate secondary pollutants,such as nitrogen oxides,it has become in many instances the method of choice for the control of low concentrations of odors,volatile organic compounds,or hazardous air pollutants in large air streams.A significant body of knowledge and experience has been generated on biological waste gas purification.Examples of waste gas treatment are presented in this paper,such as at municipal wastewater treatment plants,emission from live stock industries,sulfur emissions from industries.This paper discusses the problem of how to prevent biomass clogging and introduces the application of molecular biotechnology in biologeical treatment.The development trend of the Biological treatment are discussed.We hope the biological treatments can gain widely application in China.
