Discovery of mitochondrial chimeric-gene associated with cytoplasmic male sterility of HL-rice

Abstract: The mitochondrial genome libraries of HL-type sterile line (A) and maintainer line(B) have been constructed. Mitochondrial gene, atp6, was used to screen libraries, due to the different Southern and Northern blot results between sterile and maintainer line. Sequencing analysis of positive clones proved that there were two copies of atp6 gene in sterile line and only one in maintainer line. One copy of atpt6 in sterile line was same to that in maintainer line; the other showed different flanking sequence from the 49th nucleotide downstream of the termination codon of atp6 gene. A new chimeric gene, orfH79, was found in the region. OrfH79 had homology to mitochondrial gene cox II and orf107, and was special to HL-sterile cytoplasm.
The editing sites in transcripts of functional genes of rice mitochondria

Abstract: RNA editing exists extensively in the higher plant mitochondria, and is a required step for forming functional proteins. There may be some relationship between RNA editing and cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), a kind of phenomenon that is attributed to mitochondrial genome mutations. The research materials used are the gametophytic male sterility line (A), maintainer line (B) and F1 hybrid (F1) of HL-type CMS rice. cDNAs and DNAs of atp6 and coxII have been obtained from A, B and F11 by PCR and RT-PCR. Comparing sequences of cDNAs and DNAs, 18 and 15 editing sites were found respectively in the transcripts of atp6 and coxII. A, B and F1 shared the same editing sites. RNA editing improves hydrophobicity and conservation of the predicted protein as compared with other organisms.

Chronic Toxicity Study in Rats Orally Exposed to Mulberry Sea-Buckthorn Beverage Concentrate  [PDF]

Abstract:

Objective: This study is designed to observe the chronic toxicity after the administration of mulberry sea-buckthorn beverage concentrate for 3 months on rats and to predict the possible adverse effect and the potential toxicity target organs. Method: The rats (SPF level) were randomly divided into high-dose (20 mL/kg BW), middle-dose (10 mL/kg BW), low-dose (5 mL/kg BW) groups and negative control group (20 mL/kg BW of purified water) with 30 rats in each group. Each group was orally given mulberry sea-buckthorn beverage concentrate for 3 months and recovered by stop feeding samples for 2 weeks for a recovery observation. The rats’ general condition, the organ coefficient, the indexes of hematology and blood biochemistry and the histological changes of the main organs were determined. Result: The appearance and behavior of activity in rats showed no anomalies in all these groups and all the rats put on weight during this period. Comparing to the negative control group, no obvious differences were observed in the weekly weight and organ coefficient of each dose group. After 3 months of administration, HGB in both mulberry sea-buckthorn beverage concentrate low-dose group and high-dose group were increased. No significant differences were observed in the indexes of hematology after 2 weeks of recovery. CREA in low-dose, middle-dose and high-dose groups were significantly increased after 3 months of administration and it remained in the high level in middle-dose and high-dose group even after 2 weeks of recovery. No drug-related lesions were observed in the histological changes of major organs. Conclusion: The results show that long term use of mulberry concentrated sea-buckthorn beverage can lead to increased CREA, which suggested kidney toxicity. Although no obvious pathological change was found in kidney, we should pay attention to chronic kidney damage in the further research.

Optimal Asset Allocation Strategy for Defined-Contribution Pension Plans with Different Power Utility Functions  [PDF]

Abstract:

The relationship between the optimal asset allocation and the functional form of power utility is investigated for defined-contribution (DC) pension plans. The horizon dependence of optimal pension portfolios is determined by the argument of the power utility function. The optimal composition of pension portfolios is horizon independent when terminal utility is a power function of wealth-to-wage ratio, and deterministically horizon dependent when terminal utility is a function of terminal wealth or replacement ratio (the pension-to-final wage ratio). The optimal portfolios all contain a speculative component to satisfy the risk appetite of DC plan members, which is dominated by bonds under usual market assumptions. The optimal compositions of financial wealth on hand (the sum of pension portfolio and the short-sold wage replicating portfolio) are stochas- tically horizon dependent when wages are fully hedgeable and stochastic. The optimal pension portfolios also have a preference free component to hedge wage risk, when terminal utility is a function of wealth-to-wage ratio or replacement ratio. A state variable dependent component in optimal pension portfolios exists when terminal utility is a function of terminal wealth or replacement ratio, but it disappears when terminal utility is a function of terminal wealth-to-wage ratio and the risk premium is constant.

Abstract: This paper presents a method to define a set of mutually recursive inductive types, and develops a higher-order unification algorithm for λΠΣ extended with inductive types. The algorithm is an extension of Elliott's algorithm for λΠΣ. The notation of normal forms plays a vital role in higher-order unification. The weak head normal forms in the extended type theory is defined to reveal the ultimate “top level structures” of the fully normalized terms and types. Unification transformation rules are designed to deal with inductive types, a recursive operator and its reduction rule. The algorithm can construct recursive functions automatically. Tan Qingping received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Changsha Institute of Technology in 1992. Now he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Changsha Institute of Technology. His research centers around the formal development of software, type theory, higher order logic and software engineering. Dr. Tan is a member of the IEEE Computer Society.

Abstract: For nonnegative integers $n$ and $k$, we introduce in this paper a new class of $(n,k)$-quasi-*-paranormal operators satisfying $$||T^{1+n}(T^{k}x)||^{1/(1+n)}||T^{k}x||^{n/(1+n)} \geq ||T^*(T^{k}x)|| \makebox{\ for all} x \in H.$$ This class includes the class of $n$-*-paranormal operators and the class of $(1,k)$-quasi-*-paranormal operators contains the class of $k$-quasi-*-class $A$ operators. We study basic properties of $(n,k)$-quasi-*-paranormal operators: (1) inclusion relations and examples; (2) a matrix representation; (3) joint (approximate) point spectrum and single valued extension property.

Abstract: Let $X,Y$ be Banach spaces, $A:X \longrightarrow Y$ and $B,C:Y \longrightarrow X$ be bounded linear operators satisfying operator equation $ABA=ACA$. Recently, as extensions of Jacobson's lemma, Corach, Duggal and Harte studied common properties of $AC-I$ and $BA-I$ in algebraic viewpoint and also obtained some topological analogues. In this note, we continue to investigate common properties of $AC$ and $BA$ from the viewpoint of spectral theory. In particular, we give an affirmative answer to one question posed by Corach et al. by proving that $AC - I$ has closed range if and only if $BA - I$ has closed range.
