Abstract: objectives: although asbestos was banned in spain in 2001, monitoring the health of previously-exposed workers is required. in 2002 the ministry of health and the autonomous regions of spain planned a health surveillance program for workers exposed to asbestos (programa de vigilancia de la salud de los trabajadores expuestos al amianto [pivistea]) with employers' organizations, trade unions and scientific societies. the aim of this study was to evaluate the pivistea to improve its effectiveness. methods: a questionnaire with indicators for the year 2008 was sent to spain's 17 autonomous regions, as well as to the autonomous cities of ceuta and melilla. the results were analyzed by evaluating the compliance of each program with the activities established by the pivistea. results: in december 2008, a total of 22,158 workers from 14 autonomous regions and 306 companies were included in the program. the program had been started in 88% of the regions but surveillance activities remained scarce in 24%. fifty-seven percent of the autonomous regions (69% of the total number of workers) provided the information requested. seven autonomous regions provided data on the relationship between the diseases found and asbestos exposure. only 5% of these diseases entitled affected individuals to receive compensation for occupational diseases. conclusions: the health surveillance of workers previously exposed to asbestos in spain, as well as medical-legal recognition of diseases caused by exposure at work, remain in adequate. although the trend is positive, the effectiveness of many regional programs is limited, and inter-regional inequalities among affected workers have been detected.
Activation of μ-opioid receptors inhibits calcium-currents in the vestibular afferent neurons of the rat through a cAMP dependent mechanism

Abstract: Opioid receptors are expressed in the vestibular endorgans (afferent neurons and hair cells) and are activated by the efferent system, which modulates the discharge of action potentials in vestibular afferent neurons (VANs). In mammals, VANs mainly express the μ opioid-receptor, but the function of this receptors activation and the cellular mechanisms by which they exert their actions in these neurons are poorly studied. To determine the actions of μ opioid receptor (MOR) and cell signaling mechanisms in VANs, we made perforated patch-clamp recordings of VANs that were obtained from postnatal days 7 to 10 (P7–10) rats and then maintained in primary culture. The MOR agonist [D-Ala2, N-Me-Phe4, Gly5-ol]-enkephalin (DAMGO) inhibited the total voltage-gated outward current; this effect was prevented by the perfusion of a Ca2+-free extracellular solution. We then studied the voltage-gated calcium current (Ica) and found that DAMGO Met-enkephalin or endomorphin-1 inhibited the ICa in a dose-response fashion. The effects of DAMGO were prevented by the MOR antagonist (CTAP) or by pertussis toxin (PTX). The use of specific calcium channel blockers showed that MOR activation inhibited T-, L- and N-type ICa. The use of various enzyme activators and inhibitors and of cAMP analogs allowed us to demonstrate that the MOR acts through a cAMP dependent signaling mechanism. In current clamp experiments, MOR activation increased the duration and decreased the amplitude of the action potentials and modulated the discharge produced by current injection. Pre-incubation with PTX occluded MOR activation effect. We conclude that MOR activation inhibits the T-, L- and N-type ICa through activation of a Gαi/o protein that involves a decrease in AC-cAMP-PKA activity. The modulation of ICa may have an impact on the synaptic integration, excitability, and neurotransmitter release from VANs.

Abstract: Trp(Nps)-Lys-NH2 derivatives, bearing alkyl or guanidine groups either at the N–terminus or on the Lys side-chain or at both positions were conveniently prepared on solid-phase and evaluated as TRPV1 channel antagonists.
La tradición clásica en la prosa científica de Chile y Argentina. Plinio y las ballenas en la obra del abate Molina = The classical tradition in the scientific prose of Chile and Argentina. Pliny and the whales in the work of Abbot Molina

This paper aims to offer a general view of the studies devoted in Argentina and Chile to the literary genre called Natural History. With the emerging awareness of nationhood, a number of American and European authors, prompted by a desire for commercial expansion and scientific knowledge, began to describe the wildlife of the American territories. In undertaking this task they made use of classical literature, specially Pliny's Naturalis Historia. One of the most influential authors in this reworking of classical methods and figures was Abbot Molina, whose work Compendio de la Historia Geográfica, Natural y Civil del Reyno de Chile is closely modelled on Pliny's style.

Espiral , 2008,

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyse the distribution of KIR haplotypes and the KIR2DL2/3 alleles in chronic HCV-infected patients in order to establish the influence on the response to pegylated interferon plus ribavirin classical treatment. The alleles study of previously associated KIR2DL2/3 showed that KIR2DL2*001 was more frequent in non-SVR (NSVR) (42.2% vs. 27.5%, p<0.05) and KIR2DL3*001 was associated with sustained viral response (SVR) (41.6% vs. 61.2%, p<0.005). The KIR2DL3*001-HLA-C1 association was also significant (24.5% vs. 45.7%, p<0.001). From the frequencies of KIR obtained, 35 genotypes were assigned on the basis of previous studies. The centromeric A/A genotype was more frequent in SVR (44.1% vs. 34.5%, p<0.005) and the centromeric B/B genotype was found to be significantly more frequent in NSVR (20.9% vs. 11.2%, p<0.001). The logic regression model showed the importance of KIR genes in predicting the response to combined treatment, since the positive predictive value (PPV) was improved (from 55.9% to 75.3%) when the analysis of KIR was included in addition to the IFNL3 rs12979860 polymorphism. The study of KIR receptors may be a powerful tool for predicting the combined treatment response in patients with chronic HCV infection in association with the determination of IFNL3 polymorphism.
