Multivariate Modality Inference Using Gaussian Kernel  [PDF]

The number of modes (also known as modality) of a kernel density estimator (KDE) draws lots of interests and is important in practice. In this paper, we develop an inference framework on the modality of a KDE under multivariate setting using Gaussian kernel. We applied the modal clustering method proposed by [1] for mode hunting. A test statistic and its asymptotic distribution are derived to assess the significance of each mode. The inference procedure is applied on both simulated and real data sets.

Abstract: Modalclust is an R package which performs Hierarchical Mode Association Clustering (HMAC) along with its parallel implementation over several processors. Modal clustering techniques are especially designed to efficiently extract clusters in high dimensions with arbitrary density shapes. Further, clustering is performed over several resolutions and the results are summarized as a hierarchical tree, thus providing a model based multi resolution cluster analysis. Finally we implement a novel parallel implementation of HMAC which performs the clustering job over several processors thereby dramatically increasing the speed of clustering procedure especially for large data sets. This package also provides a number of functions for visualizing clusters in high dimensions, which can also be used with other clustering softwares.

Sound Quality Prediction of Vehicle Interior Noise under Multiple Working Conditions Using Back-Propagation Neural Network Model  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper presents a back-propagation neural network model for sound quality prediction (BPNN-SQP) of multiple working conditions’ vehicle interior noise. According to the standards and regulations, four kinds of vehicle interior noises under operating conditions, including idle, constant speed, accelerating and braking, are acquired. The objective psychoacoustic parameters and subjective annoyance results are respectively used as the input and output of the BPNN-SQP model. With correlation analysis and significance test, some psychoacoustic parameters, such as loudness, A-weighted sound pressure level, roughness, articulation index and sharpness, are selected for modeling. The annoyance values of unknown noise samples estimated by the BPNN-SQP model are highly correlated with the subjective annoyances. Conclusion can be drawn that the proposed BPNN-SQP model has good generalization ability and can be applied in sound quality prediction of vehicle interior noise under multiple working conditions.

A Parallel Rough Set Tracking Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: In order to solve speed and accuracy problems of maneuvering target tracking in wireless sensor networks, a Rough Set and neural network Adaptive Interacting Multiple Model (RSAIMM) tracking algorithm was proposed. Based on the establishment of target movement model and rough set neural integration adaptive model, a decision making method which combined rough set theory and neural network was utilized to determine the adjustment of model parameters during target tracking process. Accurate enough system variance was employed to adapt to maneuvering change of the target, thus maintaining rapid response to and high precision tracking of target state. Simulation result showed that over traditional Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) tracking algorithm, tracking accuracy of RSAIMM algorithm improved by 23.15%, and convergence speed of RSAIMM algorithm improved by 21.67%.

Abstract: The time until an approaching object passes the observer is referred to as time-to-passage (TTP). Accurate judgment of TTP is critical for visually guided navigation, such as when walking, riding a bicycle, or driving a car. Previous research has shown that observers are able to make TTP judgments in the absence of information about local retinal object expansion. In this paper we combine psychophysics and functional MRI (fMRI) to investigate the neural substrate of TTP processing. In a previous psychophysical study, we demonstrated that when local retinal expansion cues are not available, observers take advantage of multiple sources of information to judge TTP, such as optic flow and object retinal velocities, and integrate these cues through a flexible and economic strategy. To induce strategy changes, we introduced trials with motion but without coherent optic flow (0% coherence of the background), and trials with coherent, but noisy, optic flow (75% coherence of the background). In a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study we found that coherent optic flow cues resulted in better behavioral performance as well as higher and broader cortical activations across the visual motion processing pathway. Blood oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal changes showed significant involvement of optic flow processing in the precentral sulcus (PreCS), postcentral sulcus (PostCS) and middle temporal gyrus (MTG) across all conditions. Not only highly activated during motion processing, bilateral hMT areas also showed a complex pattern in TTP judgment processing, which reflected a flexible TTP response strategy.

Abstract: A linear 7-step synthesis of vildagliptin-β-O-glucuronide (2) starting from commercially available D-glucurono-6, 3-lactone (3) was herein achieved with 11.3% overall yield. Efficient preparation of compound 6 in pure α form was obtained, which was proved critical to achieve high anomeric selectivity in β-O-glycosylation later. The direct β-O-glycosylation of vildagliptin (1) containing both a tertiary alcohol and a secondary amine was studied and achieved in good yield. The deprotection step to afford product was delicately executed to avoid hydrolysis of nitrile group. The target compound 2 was obtained after purification by reversed-phase C18 chromatography.
Optical implementation of quantum random walks using weak cross-Kerr media

Abstract: Weak cross-Kerr media provides additional degrees of freedom of qubits in quantum information processing. In this paper, by exploiting weak cross-Kerr nonlinearity, we propose an optical implementation scheme of one-dimensional quantum random walks. The random walks are described by the interaction of single photons with cross-Kerr media. The proposed scheme can also be used to implement one-dimensional quantum random walks on an infinite line.
