A Course Approach to Student Transition to University: A Case Study in Agricultural Business Management  [PDF]
Yann Guisard, Karl Behrendt, Peter Mills, Shevahn Telfser, Warwick Weatley, Carole Hunter, Rebecca Acheson, Zelma Bone
Creative Education (CE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2012.326135
Abstract: The focus of this paper is to present a case study of an integrated course approach to student transition in an undergraduate agricultural business management program. This wholistic approach is particularly relevant to courses with small student intake (defined here as less or equal to 20 full time students). These small intakes represent approximately 38% of all intakes in Australian universities. Most universities have an orientation week with generic and course specific activities to assist students in their transition to university life but very few have a ‘total package’ of sustained transitional support with an overnight tour, mentoring program, curriculum mapping and course design for all of the first stage subjects as just some of their strategies. The transition was planned to take place over the entire first stage of the course. A course team working collaboratively and cohesively was paramount to the success of this project. The approach was first implemented in 2010 and three years of data are presented here. These data clearly demonstrate that although student grades did not significantly improve, student satisfaction and perception of the “worth” of the various fundamental subjects taught in the first year of their course increased. This is associated with a recent decrease in first year student attrition. Finally and perhaps more importantly, academics reported that students seemed to display a higher standard of academic literacy and deeper critical thinking in their various assessment tasks.
Sonho, um observatório psíquico: psicopatologia fundamental e subjetividade
Gromann, Regina Maria Guisard;Berlinck, Manoel Tosta;
ágora: Estudos em Teoria Psicanalítica , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14982003000100008
Abstract: dreams, a psychic observatory: fundamental psychopathology and subjectivity. this article aims at placing the dream in fundamental psychopathology, a field based on the dimension of subjectivity. in their essence, dreams are like mirage, and a means for observing the psychic phenomena that become relevant in the psychoanalytic process. being attentive to dreams is a sine qua non condition for this process, in which the subject, as it contemplates aspects and encounters that are recurrent in its mental movements, opens up a space which is favorable for them. our purpose here is to discuss the constitutive aspects of the depressive state and the nuances marked by its passage through the psychoanalytic setting. the manifestations of dreams become an observatory, as it were, of these passages constituted on the basis of a dream dreamed by the analytic pair, that is, converted into analytic history.
Usefulness of Natural Starters in Food Industry: The Example of Cheeses and Bread  [PDF]
Demarigny Yann, Gerber Pauline
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2014.517181
Abstract: Natural starters have been extensively used for many centuries to make many different fermented food products from different raw materials: Milk, meat, roots, vegetables, etc. The industrialisation of food production at the end of the 19th century necessitated the use of regular selected starters to standardize the organoleptic characteristics of the final product. As a consequence, during the 20th century, there was a decline in the use of natural starters in Western countries except in the production of local cheeses or sourdough breads. The beginning of this new millennium has witnessed a deep change in consumer demand, in pursuit of quality, safety and pleasure. In this context, natural starters could, in the future, play an important role in the development of fermented products. However, food producers and researchers have first to cope with fundamental problems in the understanding of these complex ecosystems. The dynamic evolution of the microbial population inside the natural starter (its resilience, its genetic and physiological aptitudes) and the consequences on the product are still partially unknown. This document reviews a broad range of articles concerning the use of natural starters with a specific focus on cheeses and breads, and discusses the major stakes for local food production and the consumption of typical products.

Marcadet, Yann;
Alteridades , 2007,
Abstract: the article examines the daily spatial practices of the inhabitants of a socially heterogeneous mexico city's central neighborhood. this sector has more and more middle class population. the goal is to understand what the role of the social class is and the role of the other criteria such as sex, age and residential trajectory within the definition of the way of life of the people who live in the same neighborhood. the study offers some contribution to the conclusions of some publications on middle class and it also aims to participate in the debate on segregation in the mexican capital.

Sets of exact approximation order by rational numbers II
Yann Bugeaud
Uniform Distribution Theory , 2008,
Abstract: For a non-increasing function $\Psi$, let $\Exact(\Psi)$ be the set of real numbers that are approximable byrational numbers to order $\Psi$, but to no order $c\Psi $with $0 < c < 1$. In a previous paper, we determined the Hausdorff dimension of the set $\Exact(\Psi)$ when$x \mapsto x^2 \Psi(x)$ is non-increasing and the sum$\sum_{x \ge 1} x \Psi(x)$ converges. In the present note we complement this result by establishing that $\Exact(\Psi)$ has full Hausdorff dimension for a large class of functions $\Psi$ that do not decrease too slowly and are such that the sum $\sum_{x \ge 1} x \Psi(x)$ diverges.Furthermore, we discuss the case where $x \mapsto x^2 \Psi(x)$ is a constant function.
