In situ simultaneous determination of trace elements, U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes in zircon and baddeleyite

Abstract: This paper describes a combined method of simultaneously measuring U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotopes as well as trace elements in Phalaborwa baddeleyite and 91500, GJ-1, TEMORA-1 and SK10-2 zircons by means of Neptune MC-ICPMS and Agilent Q-ICPMS connected to a 193 nm excimer laser ablation system. Material ablated by laser was carried in different proportions into Q-ICPMS for U-Pb isotopic and trace elemental and MC-ICPMS for Lu-Hf isotopic compositions. Experiments indicate that different proportions of ablated material for the Q-ICPMS and MC-ICPMS (6:4, 5:5 and 4:6 respectively) do not show any bias for the zircon/baddeleyite U-Pb age, Lu-Hf isotope and trace elemental compositions within analytical errors. Using 40–60 μm spot size, the obtained U-Pb ages of Phalaborwa baddeleyite, 91500, GJ-1, TEMORA and SK10-2 zircons are 2065±15 (2σ, n=20), 1063±6 (2σ, n=19), 613±6 (2σ, n=20), 416±5 (2σ, n=20) and 32.6±0.5 (2σ, n=20) Ma, respectively. The 176Hf/177Hf ratios are 0.281231±24 (2SD, n=20), 0.282310±35 (2SD, n=19), 0.282028±34 (2SD, n=20), 0.282687±34 (2SD, n=20) and 0.282752±53 (2SD, n=20), respectively. The obtained trace elemental compositions are identical to the reference values. Therefore, this kind of technique makes it possible to simultaneously obtain the U-Pb age, Lu-Hf isotopes and trace elemental compositions of zircon and baddeleyite, which could be an important tool in solving problems in earth sciences.

Abstract: IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) can alleviate the collision and hidden station problem, but it doesn’t differentiate traffic categories (TC). Therefore, it can’t provide sufficient QoS support for different traffic categories. Recently, a new contention-based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) scheme was proposed which provides a probabilistic QoS support. In this paper, an adaptive EDCA scheme with QoS guarantee for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) is proposed. In this scheme, the EDCA scheme and the token bucket algorithm (TBA) are combined to adjust the contention window (CW). Our scheme provides the traffic differentiation.

Abstract: This paper considers the asymptotic dynamics of steady states to the Lotka-Volterra competition diffusion systems with random perturbations by two-parameter white noise on the whole real line. By the fundamental solution of heat equation, we get the asymptotic fluctuating behaviors near the stable states respectively. That is, near the steady state (u,v)=(0,1), the mean value Eu(x,t) is shifted above the equilibrium u=0 and Ev(x,t) is shifted below the equilibrium v=1. However, near the steady state (u,v)=(1,0), the mean value Eu(x,t) is shifted below the equilibrium u =1 and Eu(x,t)=0.
Genomic Arrangement of Regulons in Bacterial Genomes

Abstract: Regulons, as groups of transcriptionally co-regulated operons, are the basic units of cellular response systems in bacterial cells. While the concept has been long and widely used in bacterial studies since it was first proposed in 1964, very little is known about how its component operons are arranged in a bacterial genome. We present a computational study to elucidate of the organizational principles of regulons in a bacterial genome, based on the experimentally validated regulons of E. coli and B. subtilis. Our results indicate that (1) genomic locations of transcriptional factors (TFs) are under stronger evolutionary constraints than those of the operons they regulate so changing a TF's genomic location will have larger impact to the bacterium than changing the genomic position of any of its target operons; (2) operons of regulons are generally not uniformly distributed in the genome but tend to form a few closely located clusters, which generally consist of genes working in the same metabolic pathways; and (3) the global arrangement of the component operons of all the regulons in a genome tends to minimize a simple scoring function, indicating that the global arrangement of regulons follows simple organizational principles.
Cis-regulatory change and expression divergence between duplicate genes formed by genome duplication of Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract: As an index of functional divergence, expression divergence between duplicate gene copies has been observed and correlated with protein coding sequence divergence and bias in gene functional classes. However, the changes in the cis-regulatory region of the duplicate genes which is thought to have important role in expression divergence, has not been explored on the genome-wide scale. We analyzed functional genomics data for a large number of duplicated gene pairs formed by ancient polyploidy events in Arabidopsis thaliana. The divergence in cis-regulatory regions between two copies is positively correlated with the magnitude difference of expression. Moreover, we find that highly expressed duplicate gene pairs have a more diverged cis-regulatory region than weakly expressed gene pairs. We also show that the correlation between expression functional constraint and protein functional constraint is different in old and young duplicate pairs. Our results suggest that cis-regulatory sequence divergence contributes to the expression divergence of duplicate genes formed by genome-wide duplication. Cis-regulatory region diverges faster in highly expressed duplicate pairs. The diversify selection strengths that act on cis-regulatory region and protein coding region are negatively correlated in young duplicate pairs under expression constraint.
Triassic U-Pb age for zircon from granites in the Tonghua area and its response to the Dabie-Sulu ultrahigh-pressure collisional orogenesis

Abstract: Single-grain zircon U-Pb dating was carried out to constrain the emplacement timing of granitic plutons at Chaxinzi, Xiaoweishahe and Longtou in the Tonghua area, south of Jilin Province. The results show that these plutons formed in the Triassic with ages of 203–217 Ma. Geological and geochemical characteristics indicate that the plutons are composed of quartz diorite and granite. The former was derived from partial melting of mafic lower crust, whereas the latter originated from thickened crust with garnet as the residue in the source. It appears that protoliths of these two types of granitits are different although they have the same emplacement age. Considering that these plutons are petrologically different from the coeval granites in the Xingmeng (Xing’an-Mongolian) to Jihei (Jilin-Heilongjiang) orogenic belt in the north, it is suggested that their formation was related to the Dabie-Sulu ultrahigh-pressure collisional orogenesis since their ages are only 10–20 Ma younger than timing of the ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism, but comparable to that of the first rapid exhumation of the ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks and the emplacement of the post-collisional granites.
Relationship between Rad51 G135C and G172T Variants and the Susceptibility to Cancer: A Meta-Analysis Involving 54 Case-Control Studies

Abstract: Background The associations between Rad51 gene polymorphisms (G135C and G172T) and risk of cancer have been investigated, but the results were inconclusive. To get a comprehensive evaluation of the association above, we performed a meta-analysis of published studies. Methods A computerized search of PubMed, Embase and Web of Knowledge databases for all relevant studies was performed and the data were analyzed in a meta-analysis. The overall odds ratio (OR) with the 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was calculated to assess the strength of the association between Rad51 polymorphisms and cancer risk. Data were analyzed using fixed- or random-effects model when appropriate. Sensitivity analysis and publication bias test were also estimated. Results Overall, a total of 54 case-control studies were included in the current meta-analysis, among which 42 studies with 19,142 cases and 20,363 controls for RAD51 G135C polymorphism and 12 studies with 6,646 cases and 6,783 controls for G172T polymorphism. For G135C polymorphism, the pooled results indicated that significantly increased risk was found in overall cancers (homozygote model: OR = 1.776, 95% CI = 1.288–2.449; allelic genetic model: OR = 1.169, 95% CI = 1.016–1.345; recessive model: OR = 1.946, 95% CI = 1.336–2.835), especially in breast cancer (homozygote model: OR = 1.498, 95% CI = 1.026–2.189; recessive model: OR = 1.732, 95% CI = 1.170–2.562). For G172T polymorphism, a decreased cancer risk was observed in head and neck cancer (homozygote model: OR = 0.621, 95% CI = 0.460–0.837; allelic genetic model: OR = 0.824, 95% CI = 0.716–0.948; recessive model: OR = 0.639, 95% CI = 0.488–0.837). Conclusions Our results suggested that the Rad51 G135C polymorphism is a candidate for susceptibility to overall cancers, especially to breast cancer, and that the Rad51 G172T might play a protective role in the development of head and neck cancer.
Identification of Mesoproterozoic zircons in a Triassic dolerite from the Liaodong Peninsula, Northeast China

Abstract: Thick Neoproterozoic strata are widespread in the Dalian region, Liaodong Peninsula, Northeast China. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating of dolerite intruded into Neoproterozoic strata gives its emplacement age as 211 ±2 Ma. However, abundant 0.9–1.1 Ga zircons are identified in the dolerite. The age of 1125 ±38 Ma corresponds with the Grenvillian collisional event. The zircons of 904 ±15 Ma ages have high Th/U ratios (1.31–2.25) and magmatic oscillatory zones, being possibly related to later magmatism induced during amalgamation of Rodinia.
BAP31 is frequently overexpressed in patients with primary colorectal cancer and correlates with better prognosis

Abstract: We previously showed that B cell receptor associated protein 31(BAP31) was significantly upregulated in colorectal cancer compared with normal mucosa epithelia. However, its expression pattern and pathological role in colorectal cancer are not clearly understood. In this study, we investigated whether the expression of BAP31 was associated with the clinicopathological parameters of colorectal cancer. The expression pattern of BAP31 was detected by immunohistochemistry on a tissue microarray in both primary tumor and paired distant normal mucosa samples from 120 consecutive colorectal cancer patients. Furthermore, BAP31 protein expression was also determined in twenty colorectal adenomas and eight liver metastasis samples. There was positive expression of BAP31 in 64.17% of primary tumors and 6.67% in distant normal mucosa (P=0.000). Negative expression of BAP31 was correlated with distant metastasis (P=0.036) and lower tumor differentiation grade (P=0.001). Patients with BAP31-negative expression showed significantly lower overall survival rate (P=0.003) compared to patients with BAP31-positive expression. Our results demonstrate that BAP31 may serve as a candidate prognostic marker in colorectal cancer and negative BAP31 expression may lead to more aggressive invasion of colorectal cancer.

Abstract: Schizophrenia is a serious neuropsychiatric illness affecting about 1% of the world's population. It is considered a complex inheritance disorder. A number of genes are involved in combination in the etiology of the disorder. Evidence implicates the altered dopaminergic transmission in schizophrenia. In the present study, in order to identify susceptibility genes for schizophrenia in dopaminergic metabolism, we analyzed 59 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 24 genes of the dopaminergic pathway among 82 unrelated patients with schizophrenia and 108 matched normal controls. Considering that traditional single-locus association studies ignore the multigenic nature of complex diseases and do not take into account possible interactions between susceptibility genes, we proposed a multi-locus analysis method, using the posterior probability of morbidity as a measure of absolute disease risk for a multi-locus genotype combination, and developed an algorithm based on perturbation and average to detect the susceptibility multi-locus genotype combinations, as well as to repress noise and avoid false positive results at our best. A three-locus SNP genotype combination involved in the interactions of COMT and ALDH3B1 genes was detected to be significantly susceptible to schizophrenia.
