Association of Mitral Annulus Calcification with High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein, Which Is a Marker of Inflammation

Abstract: Objectives. There are limited clinical data revealing the relationship between mitral annular calcification (MAC) and systemic inflammation. The goal of the present study was to compare high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in patients with and without MAC and investigate the relationship between MAC and hs-CRP. Methods. One hundred patients with MAC who underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and 100 age-matched controls without MAC who underwent TTE were included in our study. Hs-CRP levels were compared between groups. Results. Prevalence of female gender, hypertension, and coronary artery disease were significantly higher in the MAC group than in the control group (64% versus 45%, =0.007, 42% versus 28%, =0.03 and 37% versus 18%, =0.003, resp.). On multivariate analysis, age, gender, and coronary artery disease were the only independent predictors of MAC. The levels of hs-CRP were higher in the MAC group than in the control group (2.02±0.35 versus 1.43±0.47 mg/dl, <0.001). This increase in hs-CRP levels in the MAC group persisted in patients without hypertension, coronary artery disease, and in male patients when compared to the control group. Conclusions. Our study demonstrated that hs-CRP, which is a sensitive marker of systemic inflammation, increased in patients with MAC.
Singing for your supper: Staff singing for transformation and teambuilding in a South African bank

Abstract: Transformation entails meaningful change. In South Africa (as is increasingly the case in Europe and elsewhere), such change hinges on interaction and communication between citizens of different cultures, ethnicities and languages. Where the inability to speak the others' language(s) can inhibit real interaction and genuine communication, choral singing proffers unique opportunities for shared communicative experiences. In 2005, Dr Steve Booysen, then Group Chief Executive of the Absa Group, initiated an internal choir festival as a platform for social interaction and teambuilding for staff across all cultures, age groups and post levels in the bank. Booysen envisaged the choir project as a means of moral support during the Absa–Barclays merger. This article reports on the results of a Doctoral investigation into the extramusical benefits of this project for Absa, such as transformation and teambuilding. Choral singing as social capital is discussed. The Absa choir project can serve as a microcosm of larger multicultural, multilingual macrocosms. The benefits attained through communal singing in this project may also hold possibilities for attaining unity in diversity in South Africa.
The impact of role reversal in representational practices in history textbooks after Apartheid

Abstract: History became a mere sub-section in the broad category of social sciences in the (then) new Curriculum 2005, significantly diluting it as a school subject. Yet the rewriting of South African history textbooks after the seminal democratic elections in South Africa during 1994 became a tool to counter the Apartheid stereotypes, previously loaded with strong cultural and political content. The focus during the past 10-12 years in South African historiography, on the reversal of the colonial portrayal of Africans, has resulted in the de-mystification of Eurocentrism in textbooks. New myths and new silences were re-instated and ensured that again only one voice is dominant - the voice of black South Africans. Multi-perspectivity, one of the non-negotiable pillars of post-modern historiography, is being disregarded in a country attempting to write a sound report of its past. In this article I address the extent to which white and black role reversal is reflected in representational practices in current South African historiography perspectives. A research group of six academics examined the illustrative material of nine series Grades 4-6 primary school history textbooks to identify the extent of racial representation. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Of all the illustrations in the textbooks, 15% depicted whites, 50% blacks, and 35% blacks and whites together. The qualitative findings suggest that so-called 'white history' is marginalized in the exemplars. White role models are downplayed and portrayed only as peripheral figures, making their race indistinct. The "butterscotch-effect" (the light colouring of faces) contributes to the fact that there are no racially marked identities. Learners will therefore have difficulty in identifying with the characters and narrators, especially since attempts to portray multi-perspectivity were found in only two textbooks. The data suggest that Afrikaner nationalist views are being replaced by African nationalist views and that history is again serving an ideological objective by striving to establish a single, simplistic perspective on the past.

Abstract: The first decade of the AIDS epidemic was mainly characterized by the dissemination of information, without taking the needs of different target groups into consideration. The objective of this study was to examine the knowledge, myths, causaI attributions, attitudes, susceptibility, sexual behaviour, sexual behavioural change and obstacles preventing behavioural change in a multi-cultural, heterosexual context. Possible cultural differences were established and recommendations made for AIDS education programs. A survey was conducted and data collected through questionnaires obtained from 1494 subjects. Although marked cultural differences were evident, the results indicated that all AIDS prevention programs should contain certain basic components, which should be modified to suit the needs of specific target groups. The purpose of AIDS education programs should be to give practical advice about AIDS; to dispel myths about the spread of HIV; to correct faulty attributions about the causes of AIDS; to change attitudes and to establish a sense of compassion for infected people; to alleviate anxiety and to establish a realistic sense of susceptibility, to motivate people to change their sexual behaviour, and to determine and rectify the obstacles preventing people from changing their sexual behaviour.
Back-Calculation of Fork Lengths of Capoeta capoeta umbla (Pisces:Cyprinidae) from Otolith Lengths Dursun Sen

Abstract: In this study, the ages of Capoeta capoeta umbla inhabiting in Hazar Lake (Turkey) were determined from otolith. The lengths of fish at previous ages were estimated from otolith length by using back-calculation method. The calculated fork length values for male, female and all fish samples ranged 67.26-329.27, 71.05-341.03 and 69.36-336.33 respectively. In all age groups, calculated lengths were always found smaller than measured lengths. The relationship in calculated lengths was significantly different between some age groups, but did not differ between females and males It was found that the gap between calculated length and measured length was gradually close to each other with increasing fish age.

Abstract: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the tendon sheath is the second most common tumor of the hand. GCT is placed locally and characterized by slow growth and benign nature. GCT of the finger is usually localized and not diffuse in the palmar area. We present here a 20-year-old man with a rare case of tendon sheath’s giant cell tumor in the second finger volar surface of the right hand with palmar area invasion.

Abstract: The main ideal of Turkish Revolution is to modernize of state and society in the period of Atatürk. The whole means of westernization and civilization methods were implemented by the Turkish political elite in order to achive that main target. Music revolution should be evaluated in the different position; because of the thoughts of Revolution s leaders. While lagislating modern laws, Atatürk and other Republican s pioneers had valued to Music Revolution in a peculiar stuation and aimed to make society accostemed to the polyphonic music of west. Although the argument about the music reform had become since the establishment of the republic, the main reform tried to be performed as banning of Traditional Turkish Music in the radio, in 1934. That prohibition continued about only twenty months. This otoritative approche ought to be thought prominant example as the signs of modernizer and reformer identity of the early republican s ideology.

Abstract: The suffix of {-mAk}, explains the name of verb. This suffix is verbal noun from gerundial suffixs and leaves its place to {-mA} suffix presedent that with regard to function when take the case ending that starts with wovel. Form of {-mAk}+ {+A}= {-mA A} used previously, hasn’t been used now; it has abandoned its place to form of {-mA}+{+yA}= {-mAyA}. In fact, this suffix that differ with regard to function, has changed becaus of retrenchment and facility law of language. Abstract: The junks are one of the sources of folk’s literature. These aregenerally stayed in libraries, but a few people also have some of them. Itis always possible to attain to Junks which are staying in libraries but itis not easy to attain the others. These junks can be examined fromdifferent standpoint according to their contents.
