Bioremediation: a tool for the management of oil pollution in marine ecosystems
Barrios San Martín,Yaima;
Biotecnolog?-a Aplicada , 2011,
Abstract: during the last decades the course of the anthropogenic contamination of marine ecosystems has paralleled that of the oil industry. spills of crude oil and its derivatives can have short, medium and long-term negative consequences, and the elimination of pollutants by natural means may take years or even longer. bioremediation is an emergent branch of environmental biotechnology that is often used to accelerate this process and guarantees the reparation of damaged ecosystems, based on harnessing the metabolic capabilities of bacteria, fungi, yeast, algae and microbial mats to degrade oil hydrocarbons. bioremediation follows two main strategies: the stimulation of indigenous microbial populations, known as biostimulation, and bioaugmentation, the introduction of viable microbial populations. choosing one or another depends on the analysis of abiotic and biotic factors influencing the biodegradation process; the former refers to factors related with the pollutant and environmental conditions, while the latter encompasses all factors that have to do with microbial populations. the development of bioremediation has led to the appearance of commercially available products for spill cleanup: fertilizers containing biostimulating nutrients, bioproducts based on microorganisms, and chemical products to stimulate the growth of the microbial populations involved in the process of biodegradation.

Domínguez Alonso,Emma; Seuc Jo,Armando; Galán,Yaima;
Revista Cubana de Salud Pública , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0864-34662011000400007
Abstract: objectives to identify differences in the integral burden (combined mortality and morbidity) associated to lung cancer between sexes and among provinces, and to describe the evolution in 1990, 1995, 2000 and 2002. methods the potential years of life lost due to mortality were calculated on the basis of estimated life expectancy for quinquennial groups of age. the potential years of life lost were calculated per death as an average. the potential years of life lost due to morbidity were estimated on the basis of severity, incidence and average duration. results the rate of potential years of life lost due to premature mortality increased for both sexes in the 1990-2002 period; it was 6.07 to 7.45 per 1 000 inhabitants in males and 2.52 to 4.21 per 1 000 inhabitants in females. the provinces with the highest rates for males in 1990 and 2002 were ciudad de la habana, matanzas, la habana and isla de la juventus whereas the highest rates for females were found in pinar del río, villa clara, ciudad de la habana, isla de la juventud and ciego de avila provinces in the same years. there was found an increase in the rate of potential years of life lost due to morbidity for both sexes from 1990 to 2002; it was 0.42 to 0.52 and 0.19 to 0.28 per 1 000 inhabitants in males and females respectively. the rate of disability adjusted years of life also showed unfavourable evolution in both sexes. the highest figures were seen in la habana, ciudad de la habana and villa clara for both sexes. the males were more affected in terms of mortality and morbidity. conclusions the impact of lung cancer in healthy years of life lost had unfavourable evolution in cuba in the selected years of the 1990-2002 period.

Revista Facultad de Ingeniería Universidad de Antioquia , 2011,
Abstract: the rough set theory provides several measures and techniques to data analysis, especially in the case of problems in which the decision feature has a discrete domain. in this paper a measure and methods are proposed which allow extending this theory to the case of problems in which the features have a continuo domain, especially the decision feature. the experimental studies show their affectivity.

Vaccimonitor , 2010,
Abstract: the high-resolution liquid chromatography-fluorescence has proven to be a sensitive tool for trace detection in pharmaceuticals and it is frequently used for the quantification of some bacterial polysaccharides that have sialic acid as repeating unit. in this paper we aim at establishing and validating hplc-fluorescence to determine polysaccharide content of residual b outer membrane vesicles from neisseria meningitidis. we assembled the hplc-fl method to the quantification of this residue, using a c18 reverse phase column (ods ultrasphere, beckman, usa). we evaluated six lots of outer membrane vesicles from different strains cu 385/83 and nz 228. it was demonstrated that the hplc-fl method allows the quantification of polysaccharide b in a specific and exact manner, and that it complied with the validation parameters for a method for determining trace amounts by hplc.
Estudio de un método de desadsorción de los componentes de VA-MENGOC-BC? para el control de calidad por HPLC
Merchán Milia,Aida Yaima; Cuevas Valdespino,Matilde;
Vaccimonitor , 2003,
Abstract: thirty environmental strains of salmonella sp., maintained as secondary reference strains in the microbial culture collection of the national institute of hygiene, epidemiology and microbiology of cuba, were studied in order to verify their viability and phenotypic characteristics after preservation in semisolid media since 1980. of these strains, 96,7% were found viable, showing a survival of more than 12 years with good viability levels (106-108 ufc/ml) and 95,2% of their physiological properties preserved. this media allowed the preservation of salmonella sp. strains with good results, suggesting its use as a simple method in laboratories with limited resources.
Tuberculosis
Morán López,Elena; Lazo Amador,Yaima;
Revista Cubana de Estomatolog?-a , 2001,
Abstract: at present, the incidence of tuberculosis is on the rise. mycobacterium tuberculosis often infests aids patients due to the fact that these persons′t-cell mediated resistance is reduced, which favors the development of the disease at a higher rate than in healthy people. the disease can be transmitted directly, that is , from an infested individual to a healthy subject mainly by means of saliva containing these microorganisms, or indirectly by inhaling the bacillus which may be present in daily used objects for months due to its high resistance. myobacteria causing tuberculosis in the immunocompetent man are tuberculosis and bovis whereas other types may produce tuberculosis in immunocompromised individuals. the pathogenecity of this bacillus is related to its capacity of escaping from macrophage-induced destruction and provoking retarded hypersensitivity. this disease has very few oral manifestations; in general, a sore mainly located in the back of the tongue is the only observed sign. tuberculosis threatens to become an incurable disease because of the poor administration of anti-tuberculosis programs, that is why, who proposes dots (directly observed treatment of short duration) for its detection and treatment. this programs begins to achieve satisfactory results, although in the last five-year period, 88% of the patients estimated to be tuberculosis-infested was not covered by dots.
Citocinas inflamatorias, sus acciones y efectos en la sepsis y el choque séptico
González álvarez,Ricardo; Zamora Rodríguez,Zullyt; Alonso,Yaima;
Revista Cubana de Investigaciones Biom??dicas , 2007,
Abstract: the actions and biological effects that the pro-inflammatory cytokines exert, as well as the role they play in the evolution of sepsis and of its most severe complication, the septic shock, both in humans and in experimental animal models, developed in order to clarify the complex pathogenic mechanisms taking place, were exposed. this makes possible the development of new drugs and other effective and safe therapeutical procedures for the treatment of a severe disease causing a high morbidity and mortality at the world level. the complex interactions occurring among the diverse pro-inflammatory cytokines were stressed, as well as their interactions with other mediators of the so-called systemic inflammatory response. the dual behaviour of the actions of some cytokines occasionally carriers of opposed effects, as well as their actions depending on the period of time in which they were administered, were emphasized. another significant characteristic was that they frequently varied, and that there was no correspondence between the results of the effects of the cytokines in humans and those obtained in the experimental animal models with septic and endotoxic shock.
