Intake of Fruit Juice and Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background Several prospective studies have been conducted to examine the relationship between fruit juice intake and risk of incident type 2 diabetes, but results have been mixed. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the association between fruit juice intake and risk of type 2 diabetes. Methods PubMed and Embase databases were searched up to December 2013. All prospective cohort studies of fruit juice intake with risk of type 2 diabetes were included. The pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for highest vs. lowest category of fruit juice intake were estimated using a random-effects model. Results A total of four studies (191,686 participants, including 12,375 with type 2 diabetes) investigated the association between sugar-sweetened fruit juice and risk of incident type 2 diabetes, and four studies (137,663 participants and 4,906 cases) investigated the association between 100% fruit juice and risk of incident type 2 diabetes. A higher intake of sugar-sweetened fruit juice was significantly associated with risk of type 2 diabetes (RR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.04–1.59, p = 0.02), while intake of 100% fruit juice was not associated with risk of developing type 2 diabetes (RR = 1.03, 95% CI = 0.91–1.18, p = 0.62). Conclusions Our findings support dietary recommendations to limit sugar-sweetened beverages, such as fruit juice with added sugar, to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract: 以泛长三角41个城市为例,用旅游经济引力模型和网络模型分析2005年、2010年、2015年泛长三角旅游经济网络结构特征演化.研究发现:1) 泛长三角旅游经济联系量不断增长,上海等城市占比缩小,垄断地位减弱,旅游联系日趋紧密,整体上呈现平衡发展的趋势;2) 网络呈现东部密集,西部稀疏,中间密集,南北稀疏的不均衡格局,边缘城市孤岛状态逐渐消退,网络整体性与网络密度趋高;3) 核心—边缘区节点城市发展稳定、联系越发紧密、互动性增强,核心区成员数量增加,网络发展渐趋平衡,核心区带动作用增强,“涓滴效应”日益显著;4) 节点网络中心性隐喻了长三角城市定位呈阶梯状格局,细分为5个角色群体以定位各节点城市的地位与属性.其中上海节点中心性各项指标处于绝对优势地位,上海、杭州、苏州、南京共同扮演着旅游核心角色.
Characteristics and mechanisms of sorption of organic contaminants onto sodium dodecyl sulfate modified Ca-Al layered double hydroxides

Abstract: A series of calcium aluminum layered double hydroxides (LDHs) modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) (Ca /Al-SDSLDHs) were synthesized by co-precipitation, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The Ca /Al-SDS-LDHs enhanced sorption of nitrobenzene and naphthalene from water compared with inorganic LDH (Ca /Al-Cl-LDH). The sorption isotherms for sorption of organic contaminants onto the Ca /Al-SDS-LDHs were linear for the concentration range tested, which implies that the sorption mechanism is mainly by partition. The sorption of naphthalene onto Ca /Al-SDS-LDH was apparently stronger than that of nitrobenzene, but this order reversed after eliminating the hydrophobic effect of these two contaminants. Because naphthalene is non-polar and nitrobenzene is polar, the results indicate that the Ca /Al-SDS-LDHs were selective for polar organic contaminants.
Responses in Milk Yield, Milk Composition and Rumen Fermentation in Lactating Cows Receiving a Corn Straw or Mixed Forage Diet

Abstract: An experiment was conducted to investigate responses in milk production, milk composition and rumen fermentation of dairy cows receiving a corn straw or mixed forage diet. Ten primiparous and rumen-cannulated Holstein dairy cows averaging 127±13 days in milk (mean±SD) were randomly assigned to CS (37.1% corn straw as sole forage) or MF diet (3.7% Chinese wildrye+28.4% alfalfa hay+26.5% corn silage as mixed forage). Feed intake, body weight, body condition score and milk production were monitored. Milk fat, protein, lactose and total solids were analyzed by near-infrared analysis. Samples of rumen fluid were collected via cannula every 6 h over a 72 h duration to analyze pH, ammonia-N and VFA concentrations. Results showed that cows fed MF diet significantly increased dry matter intake (p<0.01) as well as yields of milk (p<0.05), 4% FCM (p<0.01), milk fat (p<0.05), lactose (p<0.05) and total solids (p<0.05). Cows fed MF diet had higher (p<0.01) ruminal acetate concentrate and ratio of acetate to propionate and lower concentrations of ammonia-N (p<0.01), propionate (p<0.05), butyrate (p<0.01), isobutyrate (p<0.01), valerate (p<0.01) and isovalerate (p<0.01) than cows fed CS diet. Collectively, these results suggest that cows fed MF diet improve DMI and milk production. In addition, cows fed CS diet had minor differences in rumen pH and total VFA concentration which may suggest that corn straw played an important role in maintaining rumen function when cows were fed this higher concentrate diet.
De Novo Assembly and Annotation of Salvia splendens Transcriptome Using the Illumina Platform

Abstract: Background As an important perennial herbaceous flower, Salvia splendens possesses high ornamental value. Understanding its branching processes may help scientists select the best plant type. Although Salvia splendens is a frequently-used horticultural flower, only limited transcriptomic or genomic research is available in public databases. In the present study, we, for the first time, constructed a comprehensive dataset for Salvia splendens through de novo high-throughput transcriptome sequencing. Methodology/Principal Findings We performed de novo transcriptome sequencing on two different branching type plants (Strain 35 and Cailinghong) using the Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. For Strain 35, a total of 16,488,829 reads were generated and assembled into 38,498 unigenes, with a mean length of approximately 779 bp. For Cailinghong, 16,464,713 reads were generated and assembled into 34,302 unigenes, with a mean length of approximately 812 bp. Moreover, a total of 49,310 unigenes for Salvia splendens were identified, among them 33,925 (68.80%) were annotated in the non-redundant NCBI database, 25,371 (51.45%) were annotated in the Swiss-Prot database, while 24,888 (50.47%) and 9,896 (20.07%) unigenes were assigned to gene ontology categories and clusters of orthologous groups, respectively. Using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway database, we identified 134 differently expressed unigenes between Strain 35 and Cailinghong, and then these unigenes were mapped to 79 pathways. In addition, we detected 2,453 simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Conclusions We obtained a comprehensive transcriptomic information from this work and provided a valuable resource of transcript sequences of Salvia splendens in public databases. Moreover, some candidate genes potentially involved in branching were identified. Furthermore, numerous obtained SSRs might contribute to marker-assisted selection. These data could be further utilized in functional genomics studies on Salvia splendens.
Analysis of GPU Parallel Computing based on Matlab

Abstract: Matlab is very widely used in scientific computing, but Matlab computational efficiency is lower than C language program. In order to improve the computing speed, some toolbox can use GPU to accelerate the computation. This paper describes GPU working principle, our experiments and results analysis of parallel computing by using GPU based on Matlab. Experimental results show that for parallel operations, GPU computing speed is faster than CPU, for the logical instructions, GPU computing speed is slower than CPU.
A preliminary study on the treatment of bruxism by biofeedback therapy  [PDF]

Objective: To evaluate the effect of wireless biofeedback therapy on bruxism. Methods: Fifteen bruxiers participated to be treated by this therapy. The abnormal movements of teeth during sleep were monitored by a maxillary splint with an electric resistance strain gauge. Meanwhile, the receiver device recorded these details and analyzed the data, including the value of the biting force, occurring time and duration. If the value of biting force or duration exceeds the threshold, a vibrating device like a watch style will alert the patient to relax the masticatory muscles and nervous system to stop the abnormal grinding or clenching. Data were recorded during 8 hours’ sleep and analyzed after the 12 weeks’ treatment and 24 weeks’ treatment. Results: The average episodes of bruxism have declined from (10.60 ± 1.23) to (6.60 ± 0.75) after 12 weeks’ treatment (p < 0.05), and the average duration of bruxism events was reduced from (13.2 ± 0.74) s to (6.50 ± 0.40) s (p < 0.05). The average episodes of bruxism have declined to (3.80 ± 0.64) after 24 weeks’ treatment, and the average duration of bruxism events was reduced to (3.37 ± 0.34) s (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest that biofeedback therapy can be effective for bruxism treatment.

Besides, a recursive algorithm for recessive inheritance is also proposed. Given any two of the male parent, female parent and filial generation, the genomic information of the third one can be calculated uniquely.
