Rapid Synthesis of Flavor Compound 4-Ethyloctanoic Acid under Microwave Irradiation

Abstract: Rapid synthesis of 4-ethyloctanoic acid by means of microwave irradiation is described. Diethyl malonate reacted with 2-ethyl-1-bromohexane in the presence of sodium ethoxide to give diethyl (2-ethylhexyl)malonate ( 1b). 1b was saponified in the solution of ethanol and potassium hydroxide and then acidified to form (2-ethylhexyl)propanedioic acid ( 1c), and 1c was heated and decarboxylized to give 4-ethyloctanoic acid ( 1d). The influence of reaction temperature and reaction time on the yield of 1b and the effect of reaction time on the yield of 1 c and 1d were investigated in order to optimize the synthetic conditions. The relative optimal conditions for the synthesis of 1b were a mole ratio of sodium to diethyl malonate to 2-ethylhexyl bromide of 0.1:0.11:0.11, a reaction temperature of 80–85 °C, and a reaction time of 2–2.5 h. The yield of 1b was about 79%. 1b was saponified for 30 min and then acidified to form 1c, and the yield of 1c was 96%. 1c was heated for 16 min at 180°C to give 1d, and the yield of 1d was about 90%. The overall yield of 1d is 70% under microwave irradiation. The reaction time was reduced greatly. In order to compare the result of microwave irradiation with that of an oil bath, the reactions were also performed in an oil bath. The structures of intermediates, product and by-product were confirmed by HRMS, 1H NMR, 13C-NMR and IR.
Three new Chinese records of Phaeosphaeria I. Miyake

Abstract: During investigation and identification of fungi from Wuyi Mountains, Fujian Province, Huangshan Mountains, Anhui Province and Kunyushan Mountains, Shandong Province, three new Chinese records of Phaeosphaeria were found. They are Phaeosphaeria humerata, P. marciensis and P. typharum. Phaeosphaeria are usually saprophytic on dead stems or other wood of monocotyledon of Poaceae, Cyperaceae and Juncus. In this paper, morphological characters, illustrations and discussions of the species are provided and the specimens were deposited at mycology laboratory of Qingdao Agricultural University (MHQAU).
Hypoxic and Highly Angiogenic Non-Tumor Tissues Surrounding Hepatocellular Carcinoma: The ‘Niche’ of Endothelial Progenitor Cells

Abstract: Our previous investigations showed that mobilized endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are enriched in non-tumor tissues (NT) surrounding hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), compared to in tumor tissues (TT). This particular recruitment of EPCs is worth investigating further. The mobilization, recruitment, homing, and incorporation of EPCs into tumors require the participation of multiple factors, including angiogenic factors, adherent molecules, endothelial cells, hypoxic environment, etc. Therefore, we hypothesized that NT might be a hypoxic and highly angiogenic area, into which many more EPCs are recruited and homed. In the last three years, we evaluated the hypoxic condition, angiogenic factors and angiogenic index using frozen tissues or tissue microarrays from 105 patients who had undergone hepatectomy for HCC, and here we review our results and the studies of others. All results showed the expression of Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α was higher in NT than in TT. The expression of VEGFA, bFGF, TGF-β, MCP-1, MMP-9, TIMP-2, and endostatin in NT was significantly higher than in normal liver and TT. Meanwhile, the expression of CD105—the surface marker of activated endothelial cells—was also higher in NT than in TT at the protein and mRNA levels. These investigations showed that NT is a hypoxic and highly angiogenic area, which may be the ‘niche’ of EPCs. The particular background in HCC may be related to liver cirrhosis. Therefore, non-tumor tissues surrounding HCC may be the ‘niche’ of endothelial progenitor cells.

In the crystal, strong intermolecular O—H...N hydrogen bonds result in the formation of a linear chain structure along [100], and there are also weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds between the chains which help to stabilize the crystal packing.

Circulating MicroRNAs: Potential Biomarkers for Cancer

Abstract: Cancer is the leading cause of death in the world. Development of minimally invasive biomarkers for early detection of cancer is urgently needed to reduce high morbidity and mortality associated with malignancy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small regulatory RNAs that modulate the activity of specific mRNA targets and play important roles in a wide range of physiologic and pathologic processes. Recently, miRNAs were found to be dysregulated in a variety of diseases including cancer. Emerging evidence suggests that miRNAs are involved in tumor initiation and progression. Together, the different expression profiles of miRNAs in cancer, and the stability of circulating miRNAs, make them new potentially clinical biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, classification, therapeutic decisions, and prognosis.
Chaotic time series prediction based on robust echo state network

Abstract: Focusing on the problem that the echo state network is easily influenced by outliers, in this paper we propose a robust model based on the Laplace prior distribution. This is achieved by replacing the Gaussian distribution with the Laplace distribution as the prior of the model output, the Laplace prior is less sensitive to the outliers and can enhance the capbility of the model to restrict outliers. Furthermoer, to solve the problem arising from the introduction of the Laplace distribution, which makes the solving process of the method difficlut, the bound optimization algorithm is employed and a suitable surrogate function is established. Based on the bound optimization algorithm, the Laplace prior can be equivalently transformed into the form of Gaussian prior, which is easily computed, and it can also be use to estimate the model parameters adaptively. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed method can be robust when outliers exist, while remaining acceptable prediction accuracy.
An Norm 1 Regularization Term ELM Algorithm Based on Surrogate Function and Bayesian Framework

Abstract: Focusing on the ill-posed problem and the model scale control of ELM (Extreme learning machine), this paper proposes an improved ELM algorithm based on 1-norm regularization term. This is achieved by involving an 1-norm regularization term into the original square cost function, and it can be used to control the model scale and enhance the generalization capability. Furthermore, to simplify the solving process of the 1-norm regularization method, the bound optimization algorithm is employed and a suitable surrogate function is established. Based on the surrogate function, the Bayesian algorithm can be used to substitute the complicated cross validation method and estimate the regularization parameter adaptively. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed method can effectively simplify the model structure, while remaining acceptable prediction accurate.

Abstract: The epitaxial crystallization of highly oriented films of IPP/HDPE blends has been studied in this work by means of trasmission electron microsscopy. When the content of HDPE in the iPP/HDPE blends is below 30%, epitaxial growth of HDPE lamellae on highly oriented IPP lamellae has been observed. The intercrossing angle of the two kinds of epitaxial lamellae is about ±45°,while the contact planes should be (010) of IPP and (100) of HDPE. There is no above relationship epitaxial crystallization in the films when the content of HDPE in the blends is over 40% because of the formation of independent domain of HDPE.
