Study on the Construction of Multimodal Interactive Oral English Teaching Model  [PDF]

Abstract: There are many factors influencing the effect of college oral English teaching. The main problems in college English teaching are as follows: the current teachers’ teaching cannot meet the needs of students; students have low self-efficacy in oral English study; the foreign language teaching environment is not perfect enough. Based on multimodal discourse theory, teachers should integrate the current methods and strategies of college oral English teaching, construct the multimodal oral English teaching model, improve college oral English teaching and promote college students’ oral English communication skills.

Investigation of Bone Ratios for Prenatal Fetal Assessment in Taiwanese Population  [PDF]

The purpose of this study is to calculate the ratios of fetal limb bone to nasal bone length (NBL) obtained by transabdominal ultrasound between 19 and 28 weeks of gestation. Cross-sectional data were obtained from 1408 women with singleton pregnancies who underwent an advanced prenatal ultrasound examination from August 2006 to September 2008. The single measurement plane of fetal limb bones was on the longest section of each structure with appropriate image magnification. To assess repeatability of the intraobserver, two repeated measurements were obtained in 44 fetuses. The ratio of fetuses with biparietal diameter (BPD)/NBL was compared with those of fetal limb bones/NBL. The mean ratio was found between fetal NBL measurements and BPD (7.240), humerus length (HL) (4.807), radius length (RL) (4.157), ulna length (UL) (4.502), femur length (FL) (5.131), tibia length (TL) (4.528), and fibula length (FiL) (4.507). The reference ranges of fetal long bone length/NBL ratios for the second trimester was established by transabdominal sonography. There were no significant increases in these ratios with gestational age, especially the HL/NBL ratio.

Effects of Exogenous Nitric Oxide on Wheat Exposed to Enhanced Ultraviolet-B Radiation  [PDF]

We explored the use of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) on alleviating effects of UV-B light on winter wheat development. Triticum aestivum L. cv. Linyou 7287 seeds were irradiated with UV-B (10.08 kJ·m2·d–1) (enhanced UV-B) and watered with either water or 100 μmol·L–1 SNP solution. Plants were also watered with the SNP alone. The results showed that enhanced UV-B produced negative effects on seedling development. Leaf length decreased and seedling biomass dropped significantly compared with the control. Photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) dropped, and chlorophyll and carotenoid content as well as the ATPase activity declined. Content of UV-absorbing compounds and activity of the POD increased compared to the control. Application of the SNP, a NO donor partially protected wheat seedlings exposed to elevated UV-B radiation in that their leaf lengths and biomass accumulation were enhanced compared to the UV-B treatment alone. SNP also improved the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid and UV-absorbing compounds in leaves. ATPase activity was enhanced but no influence on POD activity. Furthermore, the application of SNP alone showed a favorable effect on seedling growth compared with the control.

Abstract: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive disease in which the cartilage (cushioning between joints) wears away. As the cartilage wears away, it becomes frayed and rough, and the protective space between the bones decreases. This causes rubbing of bones, resulting in pain, swelling, stiffness, decreased ability to move and formation of bone spurs. Osteoarthritis develops slowly and the pain it causes worsens over time. Although there is no cure, there are many treatment options available to help manage pain and keep people staying active. Intra-articular (IA) hyaluronic acid (HA) injection is one of the treatment options. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide, an anionic, non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan and is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid surrounding joints. It acts as a lubricant to enable bones to move smoothly over each other and as a shock absorber for joint loads. People with knee osteoarthritis have lower concentration and altered volume of hyaluronic acid than normal in their joints. Due to lower concentration and volume, exogenous hyaluronic acid may be injected into the knee joint. Treatment with exogenous hyaluronic acid contributes to restore the elastic and viscous properties of the synovial fluid, pain reduction and functional improvement. It is indicated for patients who have failed to respond adequately to conservative non-pharmacological therapy and simple analgesic.
Feedback Control in a Periodic Delay Single-Species Difference System

Abstract: A periodic delay single-species difference system with feedback control is established. With the help of analysis method and Lyapunov function, a good understanding of the permanence and global attractivity of the system is gained. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the validity of the proposed criteria. Our results show that feedback control has no influence on the permanence while it has influence on the global attractivity of the system.
