Pancreaticoduodenectomy for advanced gastric cancer with pancreaticoduodenal region involvement

Abstract: AIM: To characterize the factors of the improved survival following combined pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) and gastrectomy for the treatment of advanced gastric cancer with pancreaticoduodenal region involvement.METHODS: From 1995 to 2004, 53 patients with primary gastric cancer were diagnosed with synchronous (n = 44) or metachronous (n = 9) pancreaticoduodenal region involvement. Of these, 17 patients (32%) underwent total gastrectomy (TG) or distal subtotal gastrectomy (SG) combined with PD simultaneously. The preoperative demographic, clinical information, clinicopathologic features and the surgical results of these 17 patients were considered as factors influencing survival and were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank comparison.RESULTS: The actual 1- and 3-year survival rates of these 17 patients after resection were 77% and 34%, respectively, and three patients survived for more than 5 years after surgery. The tumor-free resection margin (P = 0.0174) and a well-differentiated histologic type (P = 0.0011) were significant prognostic factors on univariate analysis. No mortality occurred within one mo after operation, postoperative weight loss of different degree was present in all the patients with TG and 12 cases had other complications. There were 9 (53%) cases of recurrence in 5-48 mo after operation. The survival rate in the palliative and explorative group was significantly (P = 0.0064) lower than in the combined PD group.CONCLUSION: Judicious use of en bloc PD and gastrectomy and strictly preventing postoperative complications may improve the long-term survival for advanced gastric cancer patients with pancreati-coduodenal region involvement. Well-differentiated histology and negative resection margin are the most important predictors of long survival.

Recent Progresses in the Studies of Genetic Engineering for Cold Resistance in Plants

Abstract: Chilling and freezing injusy is one of the global natural disasters which can cause significant loss in plant productivity and limit areas of agricultural production. Hence it is important to improve the cold resistance of crops. Recently, due to the great advances in the researches of molecular mechanisms of cold injury, cold resistance and cold acclimation, many cold_resistant genes have been found, including all kinds of regulatory genes and functional genes. Thus the studies of genetic engineering for cold resistance in plants have also been carried out extensively in the past few years. This paper gives a general statement about recent progresses in the studies of genetic engineering of cold-resistant plants at home and abroad. In addition, some problems remaining in this field and prospects of its main strategies are discussed.
Chaotic Lag Synchronization of Coupled Time-delayed Neural Networks with Two Neurons Using LMI Approach

Abstract: In this paper,the chaotic lag synchronization of coupled time-delayed systems with two neurons is investigated. We analyze the asymptotic stability for the error dynamical sys- tem based on Lyapunov method and linear matrix inequality (LMI)technique.Some new sufficient conditions for determin- ing the lag synchronization between the coupling systems are derived.Above all,we skillfully shift our criterion which is ex- pressed in terms of LMI into the generalized eigenvalue mini- mization programming(GEVP)for the first time.The mini- mum of coupling strength is obtained successfully.A numerical experiment illustrates the effectiveness and advantage of our re- sults.
A New Method for Image Registration Based on Condition Number

Abstract: In this paper,a novel Harris corner detection algorithm based on condition number is proposed.Firstly feature points are extracted using Harris corner detector which usually leads to either missing significant corners or detecting false corners due to noise.To overcome these drawbacks,condition number,which investigates the relationship between noise and the transformation of images,is used to screen out the steady points.Then a new match method called Random Sample Consensus(RANSAC) is applied to determine matching pairs.A number of experiments demonstrate the accuracy,efficiency and robust of the approach.

Abstract: The observation that the malate-OAA shuttle activity and the AOX pathway capacity increased markedly after intense light treatment in Rumex K-1 leaves indicates that excess NADPH was transported from the chloroplasts and oxidised by the AOX pathway. The inhibition of the AOX pathway by salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) caused the over-reduction of the photosystem I (PSI) acceptor side, as indicated by the increases in the extent of reduction of P700+. Furthermore, the photosynthetic linear electron flow was restricted, which was indicated by the decreases in the PSII electron transport rate (ETR) and the photosynthetic O2 evolution rate. The restriction of the photosynthetic linear electron flow, which generates the thylakoid ΔpH, inevitably decreased the de-epoxidation of the xanthophyll cycle (ΔPRI). Therefore, the induction of non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was suppressed when the AOX pathway was inhibited. The effect of the inhibition of the AOX pathway on NPQ induction was less at 20 mM NaHCO3 than at 1 mM NaHCO3. The suppression of NPQ induction by the inhibition of the AOX pathway was also observed during the induction phase of photosynthesis. In addition, the inhibition of the AOX pathway increased the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), suggesting that the AOX pathway functions as an antioxidant mechanism.The inhibition of the AOX pathway resulted in the rapid accumulation of NADPH in the chloroplasts, which caused the over-reduction of the PSI acceptor side. Furthermore, the restriction of the photosynthetic linear electron flow due to the inhibition of the AOX pathway limited the generation of the thylakoid ΔpH and suppressed the induction of NPQ. Therefore, the mitochondrial AOX pathway protected the photosynthetic apparatus against photodamage by alleviating the over-reduction of the PSI acceptor side and accelerating the induction of NPQ in Rumex K-1 leaves.Excess light energy will result in the accumulation of reducing equivalents in the form of

Abstract: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EPM) is a plasma cell tumor arising outside of the bone marrow. Solitary EMP is an uncommon neoplasm and rarely occurs in the retroperitoneum and lacks distinctive clinical manifestations. We report a 26-year-old man with a solitary EMP in the retroperitoneum and discuss its clinical features, diagnosis and treatment.
The 16S rRNA Gene Sequences and Growth Characteristics of Two Nitrogen Fixing Endobacteria Strains from Sugarcane Stalk

Abstract: Two N2-fixing isolates, B11S and B8S, were obtained from the surface-sterilized stalks of sugarcane variety GT11and RB86-7515 which were bred in Guangxi, China and introduced from Brazil, respectively. Both isolates showed acetylene reduction in nitrogen free media. Classification of both B11S and B8S was made on the basis of 16S rRNA sequence analysis, and the biological characteristics of the two isolates were studied. The 16S rRNA sequence of the isolate B11S had a 98.5% sequence similarity to those of many Stenotrophomonas maltophili and the 16S rRNA sequence of the isolate B8S had a 100% similarity to that of Agrobacterium tumefaciens (Rhizobium radiobacter). For both growth and nitrogenase activity of the isolates, the optimum temperature was about 31°C. The optimum pH was about 6.0 for their growth but 6.5~7.0 their nitrogenase activity. The two strains propagated more quickly and showed higher nitrogenase activity with the increase of carbon concentration in the culture media, and the effect of sucrose was better than that of the glucose. The growth and nitrogenase activity could be detected when the two strains were cultured in the media containing different concentration NH4+ and NO3-, and they grew better and showed higher nitrogenase activity under suitable nitrogen contents, but the growth of the two isolates was hindered more and more strongly with the increasing of the nitrogen content.
Experimental Research on Feasible Self-repairing Conditions of Lubricating Oil With Nanometer Zinc as additive

Abstract: Tribological tests were performed to evaluate the feasible self-repairing conditions of nanometer zinc as additive on a HQ-1 wear machine , making use of uniform design method. The results were regression analyzed by Windows SPSS statistics software.Thus a mathematical model was established to correlate automatic restoration capability with load, slide velocity, concentration and repairing time.Programming solver to find feasible self-repairing conditions,and tested to verify its accuracy. While the surface morphologies of the forward and after test blocks under different test conditions were observed on surface finish measuring instrument and scanning electron microscope. It is found that the regression formulae had prominence and statistical validity. Apparatus test results and self-repairing effect were in good agreement.The results of the analysis can provide useful guidelines for the establishment of feasible self-repairing conditions.
