On the origin of the Tully-Fisher relation

Abstract: We discuss the origin of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation using the $N$-body/SPH method, which includes cooling, star formation and stellar feedback of energy, mass and metals. We consider initially rotating overdense spheres, and trace formation processes of disk galaxies from $z=25$ to $z=0$ in the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmology. To clarify the origin of the TF relation, we simulate formation of 14 galaxies with different masses and spin parameters, and compute observable values, such as the total magnitude and the line-width. We find that the simulated galaxies reproduce the slope and scatter of the TF relation: the slope is originated in the difference of total galactic masses, and the scatter is produced by the difference of initial spin parameters. As well as the TF relation, observed features of spiral galaxies, such as the exponential light-profile and the flat rotation curve, are reproduced in our simulations, which were assumed {\it a priori} in past semi-analytical approaches.

Abstract: We encountered a 36-year-old female who developed extracranial vertebral artery dissociation (EVAD), which is a rare condition in Japan. The disease developed with sudden severe right side neck pain and right upper arm pain. No abnormality was observed in the spinal canal, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, or nerve roots on MRI of the cervical spine, but dilation and double lumen were noted in the vertebral artery (VA) at the C4/5 level. The presence of aneurysm was confirmed by VA angiography, and EVAD was diagnosed. The symptoms were resolved by conservative treatment of pain, and the aneurysm shrank and disappeared with time on VA angiography. Even though neck and upper limb pain are the only clinical symptom and there is no brain dysfunction, such as disturbance of consciousness and vertigo, when symptoms develop acutely, this pathology should be included in differential diagnosis and orthopedists should carefully observe the vertebral artery, as well as the spinal canal, in evaluating cervical MRI.
Germination Studies in Some Varieties of Vigna unguiculata L. Walp. (Cowpea) from Northern Nigeria

Abstract: Unpredictable climate change is already having a profound effect on our agricultural crops thus, the need to have periodic data base on their physiology. The consequences of the change is becoming more wide spread affecting all component of our ecosystem including the vegetable species. The present studies was carried out to study cowpea seed germination and seedling establishment of seven varieties (Sampea-5, Sampea-6, Sampea-7, Sampea-8, Sampea-9, Sampea-10 and Sampea-12) in the laboratory and botanical garden of the Department of Biological Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria-Nigeria. Cowpea is used to substitute the insufficient expensive animal protein in the diet of many people in Nigeria either directly or in other preparation. Water absorption rate of cowpea seeds during imbibitions were determined after 30 min of soaking in water. Significant difference were found among Sampea-5, Sampea-7, Sampea-8, Sampea-10 and Sampea-12 while there was no significant difference between Sampea-6 and Sampea-7 in terms of water absorption rate. Mean comparison showed that the highest germination percentage (100%), seedling weight change (1.52 g), shoot length (25.81 cm), root length (23.12 cm) was observed. Based on this result, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant difference in the rate of imbibitions as well as shoots and root length exist in the seven cowpea varieties.
Peripheral capillary nonperfusion and full-field electroretinographic changes in eyes with frosted branch-like appearance retinal vasculitis

A 62-year-old man presented with sudden bilateral decreased vision accompanied by headaches. His best-corrected visual acuity was 0.01 in both eyes. Fundus examination and fluorescein angiography showed bilateral frosted branch-like appearance retinal vasculitis, and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography showed severe macular edema in both eyes. The cerebrospinal fluid analyses showed an increased lymphocyte count and protein levels. He was treated with systemic corticosteroid therapy, and his best-corrected visual acuity improved to 0.8 OD and 1.0 OS at 6 months after onset. However, fluorescein angiography showed a lack of capillary perfusion in the periphery, and the oscillatory potentials on full-field electroretinography were severely reduced in both eyes. These findings indicated extensive retinal ischemia and inner retinal dysfunction, and that fluorescein angiography and full-field electroretinograms can be useful during follow-up of eyes with frosted branch-like appearance retinal vasculitis.Keywords: frosted branch angiitis, aseptic meningitis, optical coherence tomography, electroretinogram, oscillatory potentials

Abstract: The relationship between solar activity and the global climate is not only an academically interesting problem but also an important subject for human beings. We have found an interesting relation that may be connected with above profound problem. We have analyzed the tree rings that had survived for 391 years in Japan. The tree archive is very important since it includes the period of the Maunder minimum. Quite surprisingly, Fourier analyses of the annual growth rate identified two cycles with periodicities of 12 and 25 years during the Maunder minimum, but no such cycles were found for other time periods. Possible interpretations of this result are presented.
Gait Balance Disorder by Thalamic Infarction with the Disorder of Interstitial Nucleus of Cajal

Abstract: The interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) is thought to play an important role in torsional/vertical eye position and head posture, and disorders of the INC induce abnormal ocular movements and head tilt. Our patients with ocular tilt reactions simultaneously also had disturbances in ambulatory balance, yet no reports address the loss of balance control induced by disorders of the INC. We examined the ambulatory disturbances induced by INC lesion. We experienced three patients with ocular movement disorders and abnormal head tilt due to thalamic infarction. We performed ophthalmic examinations on and checked the balance of them. With funduscopy, abnormal cycloduction was seen in the unaffected side and normal cycloduction was observed in the affected side. Nevertheless, Hess charts showed distortions in the visual image of both eyes. They all had disorders of balance control. We tried to treat them using the Bobath approach for improving their ambulatory balance. With subsequent improvements in balance control it was possible for them to take short walks, but it was difficult to make any improvements in their ocular movement. The INC is related to balance control of ambulation and disorders of the INC induce ambulatory disturbances. Cycloduction was only observed in the unaffected side, but Hess charts showed distortions of the visual image in both eyes. Ambulation was briefly improved, but diplopia persisted in these patients.
The therapeutic potential of synthetic human atrial natriuretic peptide in nephrotic syndrome: a randomized controlled trial

The efficacy of synthetic human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP) for nephrotic syndrome to ameliorate the systemic edema and retain renal functions has not been fully demonstrated.Trial design: We conducted a prospective, randomized, controlled, open-label clinical trial. Patients were randomly assigned by a stratified biased coin design.Methods: A total of 12 patients with nephrotic syndrome between the ages of 20 to 79 years were enrolled and randomly assigned to either the conventional (CON) group treated with furosemide and albumin, and hANP group, in which carperitide was administered in addition to the conventional therapies. The primary end points were: (1) the differences in serum creatinine levels, and (2) the reduction of total dosage of furosemide and albumin by the treatments of hANP. Secondary end points were body weight, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, serum protein, albumin, and urinary protein excretion.Results: A total of 13 patients were enrolled, and one patient was excluded due to severe pneumonia. In both hANP (n = 7) and CON (n = 5) groups, body weight was reduced after 2-week treatments. Serum creatinine levels at follow-up significantly increased compared with baseline. The increase in serum creatinine levels (Δ serum creatinine) was smaller in the hANP group compared with the CON group (P = 0.31). The serum uric acid, serum urea nitrogen, and urinary protein excretion were reduced in the hANP group, and increased in the CON group, though these differences were not statistically significant. The usage of hANP significantly reduced the total dosage of furosemide (P < 0.05) during the treatment periods. No adverse effects were observed.Conclusions: The concomitant use of synthetic hANP with conventional therapies is beneficial for reducing the dosage of loop diuretics, and the elevation of serum creatinine and uric acid may be avoided.Keywords: furosemide, generalized edema, human natriuretic peptide, nephrotic syndrome
