Industry Orientation, Exporting and Productivity  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper aims to analyse the relation between exporting behaviour of the firms and productivity by testing for learning by exporting hypothesis in Turkish manufacturing industry. Moreover, this study examines whether exporting and productivity relations change with respect to the orientation of industry in which the firm operates. We use the data on the largest 1000 industrial enterprises of Turkey from 1997 to 2007. The results based on unbalanced dynamic panel data models estimated show that there is no evidence that exporting fosters productivity at the firm level in Turkish manufacturing industry. Disaggregation of industries with respect to their orientations does not change this result. Exporting, or increase in the exports of the firm, doesn’t seem to be one of the sources of productivity growth at least for the firms already exporting in Turkish manufacturing.
Derivative Spectrophotometric and Isocratic High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Methods for Simultaneous Determination of Repaglinide and Metformin Hydrochloride in Pharmaceutical Preparations  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, a derivative spectrophotometric method and one HPLC method were developed and validated for analysis of anti-diabetic drugs, repaglinide (RPG) and metformine hydrochloride (MTF) in tablets. The spectrophotometric methods were based on zero-crossing first-derivative and fourth-derivative spectrophotometric method for simultaneous analysis of RPG (308 nm) and MTF (267 nm), respectively. Linear relationship between the absorbance at λmax and the drug concentration was found to be in the ranges of 5.0 - 50.0 μg·mL-1 for both RPG and MTF. The quantification limits for RPG and MTF were found to be 0.568 and 1.156 μg·mL-1, respectively. The detection limits were 0.170 and 0.347 μg·mL-1 for RPG and MTF, respectively. The second method is a rapid stability-indicating isocratic HPLC method developed for the determination of RPG and MTF. A linear response was observed within the concentration range of 5.0 - 50.0 μg·mL-1 for both RPG and MTF. The quantification limits for RPG and MTF were found to be 1.821 and 1.653 μg·mL-1, respectively. The detection limits were 0.601 and 0.545 μg·mL-1 for RPG and MTF, respectively. The proposed methods were successfully applied to the tablet analysis with good accuracy and precision.

Abstract: In the title compound, [Zn(C32H40N8S8)], the ZnII ion is coordinated by four N atoms in a slightly distorted square-planar environment. In addition, there is a Zn...S contact involving a symmetry-related S atom which, when considered, forms a pseudo-square-pyramidal coordination with respect to the ZnII ion. Three of the ethyl groups are disordered over two sites with occupancy ratios of 0.841 (10):0.159 (10), 0.802 (10):0.198 (10) and 0.457 (13):0.543 (13). Weak intramolecular C—H...N and C—H...S interactions contribute to the stability of the molecular conformation. Intermolecular C—H...S contacts, weak C—H...π interactions and π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centriod distances = 3.832 (4) and 3.850 (5) ] contribute to the stabilization of the crystal structure.

Abstract: The increase of volume and variety of information, which in turn has an important role in health services, reached to an explosive bulk, that can hardly be managable for the users. In order to meet users’ needs under these conditions, electronic health record systems were developed. Electronic health record systems integrated with electronic libraries allow clinicians, along with the patient information, also to access medical literature they would need for treatment. By comparing patient information with current information sources concerning relevant medical advances and thus performing evaluations being based on such comparisons help clinicians to save time and make fast and accurate decisions. On the other hand, the use of electronic health record systems require more active roles from medical libraries and their librarians within the framework of their parent organisation.

Abstract: The title compound, C26H26N2S2, was synthesized from bis[1,3-bis(3-phenylpropyl)benzimidazolidine-2-ylidene] and CS2 in toluene. The molecular structure is composed of a benzimidazole ring system with two phenylpropyl substituents and a dithiocarboxylate group in the 2-position. The benzimidazole unit is essentially planar, with a maximum atomic deviation of 0.008 (2) , and makes dihedral angles of 72.72 (10) and 27.62 (12)°, with the two phenyl rings. The dihedral angle between the two phenyl rings is 55.98 (15)°. The molecular packing is stabilized by a C—H...S intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction and a C—H...π interaction between a benzene H atom and the phenyl ring of a neighbouring molecule.

Abstract: In this study, a digital fault location and monitoring technique using fibre-optics and current sensors for overhead power distribution systems is presented. By using lateral current data transferred through fibre-optic communication lines to the substation, the possibility of multiple fault point locations are eliminated. The technique, based on an interactive approach whereby an assumed fault point is varied systematically until the actual fault point is found, has culminated in a fault locator design that gives a high accuracy for the vast majority of practically encountered system and fault conditions. The effectiveness of this method is verified through Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) simulations.
Determination of Fetal State from Cardiotocogram Using LS-SVM with Particle Swarm Optimization and Binary Decision Tree

Abstract: We use least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) utilizing a binary decision tree for classification of cardiotocogram to determine the fetal state. The parameters of LS-SVM are optimized by particle swarm optimization. The robustness of the method is examined by running 10-fold cross-validation. The performance of the method is evaluated in terms of overall classification accuracy. Additionally, receiver operation characteristic analysis and cobweb representation are presented in order to analyze and visualize the performance of the method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a remarkable classification accuracy rate of 91.62%. 1. Introduction There is a growing tendency to use clinical decision support systems in medical diagnosis. These systems help to optimize medical decisions, improve medical treatments, and reduce financial costs [1, 2]. A large number of the medical diagnosis procedures can be converted into intelligent data classification tasks. These classification tasks can be categorized as two-class task and multiclass task. The first type separates the data between only two classes while the second type involves the classification of the data with more than two classes [3]. Cardiotocography was introduced into obstetrics practice in the early 1970s, and since then it has been used as a worldwide method for antepartum (before delivery) and intrapartum (during delivery) fetal monitoring. Cardiotocogram (CTG) is a recording of two distinct signals, fetal heart rate (FHR), and uterine activity (UA) [4]. It is used for determining the fetal state during both pregnancy and delivery. The aim of the CTG monitoring is to determine babies who may be short of oxygen (hypoxic); thus further assessments of fetal condition may be performed or the baby might be delivered by caesarean section or natural birth [5]. The visual evaluation of the CTG not only requires time but also depends on the knowledge and clinical experience of obstetricians. A clinical decision support system eliminates the inconsistency of visual evaluation. There have been proposed several classification tools for developing such system [4, 6–10]. One of these tools is support vector machine (SVM) and it is used in [4, 8, 10]. In [4, 8], SVM is used for FHR signal classification with two classes, normal or at risk. The risk of metabolic acidosis for newborn based on FHR signal is predicted in [4] while the classification of antepartum FHR signal is made in [8]. A Research About the Contribution of Vocational Education Centers (VEC) on Apprentices’ Professional Development and Current Problems

Abstract: This study aims to identify the effectiveness of education served for apprentices in Vocational Education Centers (VEC), problems faced by apprentices, what the teachers do in terms of their vocational developments. This research is designed as mixed model and is used sample of the research includes 270 apprentices, 51 teachers and 152 craftsmen. Stratified sampling method is utilized for determining the sample of apprenticeship and craftsmen. As data gathering tool, “Contribution of VEC t Vocational Development of Apprentices Survey” developed by Tonbul and K l o lu (2011) was used in the study. The questionnaire consists of likert type questions, open ended questions and metaphors In data analysis, descriptive statistics (%, f) and content analysis technique for qualitative data were utilized. The results of the study are given in the following:Apprentices perceive VEC predominantly visit working places once a month, half of the participated teachers do not provide information about the status of the students in the school and they do not take the craftsmen’ expectations into account. Great majority of the craftsmen are not interested in what the apprentices learned. Participants are in the consensus that there is no healthy interaction with working places and Vocational Education Centers. In instructional behaviors of teachers, there are also differences between apprentices’ and teachers’ point of views. For the aim of self-development, teachers are participated academic quality vocational development activities in very low levels. Differentiation is observed in the developed metaphors by apprentices and teachers about Vocational Education Centers.
