CP embedding agent and its application to the serial section of the body wall tissue of insects

Abstract: The key of tissue section technique is the selection and application of the embedding agent. Based on the specific characteristics of the tissue and outer skeleton of insects, a new kind of embedding agent, colophony and paraffin (CP), was used without destroying the integrity of insect organs. The tissue can be sliced continuously by the use of CP embedding technique. It solves the 3 difficult problems in the serial section of the organ and tissue of insect, namely stiff materials, thin section and continuity of sections. These difficult problems are not solved by any unitary tissue section technique that is used now, including the paraffin section technique. By using the CP embedding technique, any parts or organs (like antenna, leg and wing) and even the whole body of insects (mini body) can be sliced up continuously. It will open up wide possibilities for the study of inner structure, the interrelations among organs, the micro-characteristics and the physiological functions of insects systematically.

Abstract: Intravenous administration ofl-stepholidine (SPD), a dopamine (DA) receptor antagonist, increased the firing rate of DA neurons located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNC) in both anaesthetized and paralyzed rats. However, with the increase of dose, SPD selectively inhibited the firing activity of DA neurons in the VTA but not in the SNC. The inhibition was reversed by the DA agonist apomorphine (APO), suggesting that it may be via the mechanism of depolarization inactivation (DI). In rats, chronic adrninistration of SPD for 21 d dose-dependently decreased the number of spontaneously active DA neurons in the VTA, of which effect was reversed by APO (i. v.). In contrast, the same treatment failed to affect the population of DA neurons in the SNC. Similarly, the acute treatment of SPD also decreased the number of spontaneously firing DA neurons in the VTA, but not in the SNC. SPD per se only induced very weak catalepsy. Its catalepsy which was not in proportion to dosage was only observed in the dose range of 10–40 mg/kg and lasted 15 min. SPD effectively antagonized the APO (2 mg/kg, i. p.)-induced stereotypy.The above-mentioned results suggest that SPD selectively inactivates the DA neurons in the VTA not in the SNC. SPD may associate with a low incidence of extrapyramidal side-effects and may be ranked as a promising compound for searching for a new kind of atypical neuroleptics.

Abstract: As an important supervision mechanism of the development of low-carbon economy, carbon audit arises at the historic moment. This paper analyzes the differences of the carbon audit and traditional financial audit, with SWOT method on the basis of analyzing its potential in our country, and puts forward the future development direction of carbon audit. Based on current situations, it is suggested that China should complete the upper construction, establish carbon audit system, reserve the talents and actively encourage carbon audit, in order to push the advancement of carbon audit.

Dyslipidaemia and Intima-Media Thickness of Carotid Arteries in Thirty-Five HIV/AIDS Patients Receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy

Abstract: Objectives: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has being impacted significantly therapies for natural human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, which leads to a remarkable decrease in its morbidity and mortality but it is frequently associated with metabolic complications such as dyslipidaemia and cardiovascular complications. HIV reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors can be classified into nucleoside and non-nucleoside types. Mitochondrial dysfunction due to the depletion of mt-DNA is partly responsible for various nucleoside RT inhibitors-associated adverse effects including dyslipidaemia. Efavirenz (EFV) is metabolized primarily by cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) and the metabolic effects of EFV have been described previously. All patients in this study received the same HAART treatment regime (Stavudine (d4T) + Lamivudine (3TC) + Efavirenz (EFV)). This study aims to assess incidences for dyslipidaemia and atherosclerosis. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted within outpatients of Shanghai Public Health Center. We selected thirty-five HIV-1 infected patients who receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy. Their mean CD4 cell count was 69.5 (±34.6) copies per micro liter before therapy. Fasting total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol values were respectively compared among patients at present and before therapy. Then the data was statistically analyzed. Twenty-two patients had the intima-media thickness (IMT) of their carotid arteries measured by Philips 5000 Color-Doppler ultrasound tests. Results: After therapy, patients achieved significant changes in levels of triglycerides (1.44 ± 0.35mmol/L Vs. 2.07 ± 0.54mmol/L) (P<0.001), total cholesterol (4.96 ± 0.46 mmol/L Vs. 6.15 ± 0.83mmol/L) (P<0.001) and LDL cholesterol (2.29 ± 0.33 Vs. 3.11 ± 0.29 mmol/L) (P<0.001). In contrast, the level of HDL cholesterol did not significantly change (1.06 ± 0.01 mmol/L Vs. 1.04 ± 0.01 mmol/L) (P>0.5). The mean IMT of twenty-two patients was (0.86 ± 0.14) mm after HAART, which is higher than the norm age-matched value of (0.7 ± 0.2) mm (P<0.05). Conclusion: These data suggest that HAART is potentially dangerous for hyperlipidaemia and maybe an increase in atherosclerosis.
Recognition of FT-IR Data Cuscutae Semen, Japanese Dodder, and Sinapis Semen Using Discrete Wavelet Transformation and RBF Networks

Abstract: Horizontal attenuation total reflection Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (HATR-FT-IR) studies on cuscutae semen and its confusable varieties Japanese dodder and sinapis semen combined with discrete wavelet transformation (DWT) and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks have been conducted in order to classify them. DWT is used to decompose the FT-IRs of cuscutae semen, Japanese dodder, and sinapis semen. Two main scales are selected as the feature extracting space in the DWT domain. According to the distribution of cuscutae semen, Japanese dodder, and sinapis semen’s FT-IRs, three feature regions are determined at detail 3, and two feature regions are determined at detail 4 by selecting two scales in the DWT domain. Thus five feature parameters form the feature vector. The feature vector is input to the RBF neural networks to train so as to accurately classify the cuscutae semen, Japanese dodder, and sinapis semen. 120 sets of FT-IR data are used to train and test the proposed method, where 60 sets of data are used to train samples, and another 60 sets of FT-IR data are used to test samples. Experimental results show that the accurate recognition rate of cuscutae semen, Japanese dodder, and sinapis semen is average of 100.00%, 98.33%, and 100.00%, respectively, following the proposed method. 1. Introduction At present in the medical field, the biggest achievement of the human beings is western medicine and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With a history of 2000 to 3000 years, TCM has formed a unique system to diagnose and cure illness. Herbal medicines have gained increasing attention worldwide for the treatment of chronic diseases because of their effectiveness and small side effects [1, 2]. Cuscutae semen is a kind of TCM, which has been known for the treatment of diseases for a long time. Modeling Spacing Distribution of Queuing Vehicles in Front of a Signalized Junction Using Random-Matrix Theory

Abstract: Modeling of headway/spacing between two consecutive vehicles has many applications in traffic flow theory and transport practice. Most known approaches only study the vehicles running on freeways. In this paper, we propose a model to explain the spacing distribution of queuing vehicles in front of a signalized junction based on random-matrix theory. We show that the recently measured spacing distribution data well fit the spacing distribution of a Gaussian symplectic ensemble (GSE). These results are also compared with the spacing distribution observed for car parking problem. Why vehicle-stationary-queuing and vehicle-parking have different spacing distributions (GSE vs GUE) seems to lie in the difference of driving patterns.
