Liver mitochondrial and whole-animal level metabolic compensation in a catfish during seasonal acclimatization

Abstract: To examine whether metabolic compensation during seasonal acclimatization at the liver mitochondrial level is consistent with that at the whole-animal level, respiration rates of liver mitochondria and resting metabolic rates in winter- and summer- acclimatized southern catfish (Silurus meridionalis Chen) were measured. At 12.5, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5 and 32.5°C, the mean values of state 3 respiration rates were 12.21, 13.84, 18.96, 24.78 and 32.01 nmol O2 min-1 mg-1 mitochondrial protein in the winter group, and 8.56, 9.20, 17.32, 22.74 and 26.32 nmol O2 min-1 mg-1 in the summer group, respectively. At the five assay temperatures the resting metabolic rates were 24.86, 42.68, 61.59, 84.10 and 125.65 mg O2 h-1 kg-1 body mass in the winter group, and 22.89, 40.59, 52.94, 75.13 and 109.35 mg O2 h-1 kg-1 in the summer group, respectively. Total mitochondrial respiration rates in the liver organ were estimated based on state 3 respiration rates, mitochondrial protein content and organ mass, and the mean values were 72.96, 71.87, 112.47, 167.35 and 183.27 nmol O2 min-1 in the winter group, and were 47.89, 47.39, 105.67, 138.18 and 132.29 nmol O2 min-1 in the summer group, respectively. Metabolic compensation caused by seasonal acclimatization occurred at the liver mitochondrial level and compensation at the liver organ level was found to be more efficient because of an increase in metabolic capacity of mitochondria and a boost in organ mass. Metabolic compensation at the whole-animal level was not detected. During seasonal acclimatization, the effect of metabolic compensation at liver mitochondrial level is inconsistent with that at the whole-animal level in the southern catfish. This may be due to different degrees of regulation of metabolic mechanisms among various tissues and organs in an acclimatized organism [Current Zoology 57 (1): 109–115, 2011].
Effect of organic fertilizers used in sandy soil on the growth of tomatoes  [PDF]

In order to reveal the regulating capacity of organic fertilizers on sandy soil, pots experiments were carried out. The growth of tomatoes planted on sandy soil amended by organic fertilizers was measured. Organic fertilizers can be helpful to improve the plant height, stem diameter, the aerial parts fresh weight, root fresh weight, leaf photosynthetic rates and photosynthesis, and lay a good foundation for the growth of   tomatoes. The effect of organic fertilizer is the most significant. Among all the treatments of adding 2.5%, 5%, 10% organic fertilizers, adding 10% organic fertilizers are the best. It can significantly enhance the growth and photosynthesis of tomatoes, and it is among the best of these three soil treatments for sandy soil.

Effect of Annealing on Strain-Temperature Response under Constant Tensile Stress in Cold-Worked NiTi Thin Wire

Abstract: The present paper aims to understand the influence of annealing on the strain-temperature response of a cold-worked NiTi wire under constant tensile stress. It was found that transformation behavior, stress-strain relationship, and strain-temperature response of the cold-worked NiTi wire are strongly affected by the annealing temperature. Large martensitic strains can be reached even though the applied stress is below the plateau stress of the martensite phase. At all stress levels transformation strain increases with increasing annealing temperature in the range of 350°–450°C and decreases with increasing annealing temperature in the range of 450°–650°C. The martensitic strain at lower stress levels exhibits the same tendency. At higher stress levels the martensitic strain increases with increasing annealing temperature. 1. Introduction Among many shape memory alloys (SMAs), NiTi has been widely used in many technological and engineering applications due to its excellent shape memory effect, superelasticity, high damping capacity, and others [1, 2]. Its remarkable properties result from a reversible martensitic phase transformation between austenite and martensite phases, which can be either stress induced or temperature driven. The transformation is sensitive to factors such as material composition, deformation processing, and heat treatments. Therefore, a mix of cold work followed by a specific annealing process has been comprehensively considered to optimize the physical and mechanical properties of a NiTi product and achieve shape memory and/or superelasticity. Significant efforts have been made to address the effects of heat treatment on transformation behavior [3–5], microstructure [6–8], recovery stress [9, 10], damping [11, 12], plateau stress and strain [13, 14], as well as lifetime of NiTi SMAs [15, 16]. To open new applications of NiTi SMAs, including smart structures, intelligent controllers, and memory devices, the understanding of strain and phase transformation behavior under constant applied stress is essential. In the present paper the influence of annealing on martensitic transformation and residual strains of cold-worked NiTi wire developed during cooling/heating under constant tensile stress has been investigated. 2. A shortest-path graph kernel for estimating gene product semantic similarity

Abstract: We present a shortest-path graph kernel (spgk) method that relies exclusively on the GO and its structure. In spgk, a gene product is represented by an induced subgraph of the GO, which consists of all the GO terms annotating it. Then a shortest-path graph kernel is used to compute the similarity between two graphs. In a comprehensive evaluation using a benchmark dataset, spgk compares favorably with other methods that depend on external resources. Compared with simUI, a method that is also intrinsic to GO, spgk achieves slightly better results on the benchmark dataset. Statistical tests show that the improvement is significant when the resolution and EC similarity correlation coefficient are used to measure the performance, but is insignificant when the Pfam similarity correlation coefficient is used.Spgk uses a graph kernel method in polynomial time to exploit the structure of the GO to calculate semantic similarity between gene products. It provides an alternative to both methods that use external resources and "intrinsic" methods with comparable performance.The Gene Ontology (GO) [1] systematically organizes knowledge by means of well-structured controlled vocabularies and provides consistent descriptions to organisms across species. GO terms have been widely used to annotate genes and gene products in the Gene Ontology Annotation (GOA) project [2]. Abstract: With the increasingly drastic competition in the market, consumers’ minds are more and more complex, and the demand fluctuation of product is more and more frequent, and the demand forecasting is more and more important for the management decision-making for enterprises. Based on the phase-space reconstruction of the original demand data by the chaos theory, the reconstructed data are trained in the neural network (NN), and the forecasting times are selected to forecast the development tendency of the demand, and the research result is finally tested by the alumina demand data from 2001 to 2009 of an alumina factory. The result shows that this model is simple and easy to operate, and the forecasting data are reliable, and it could offer theoretical references for management decision-makers to make scientific and reasonable decisions.
An Integrated Fuzzy Approach for the Evaluation of Supply Chain Risk Mitigation Strategies  [PDF]

Competing in an increasingly uncertain business environment, organizations need to mitigate its supply chain risks to enhance their resiliency. However, it is important to implement appropriate strategies to meet business needs. This paper presents a novel approach that integrates fuzzy risk assessment and fuzzy Delphi for the evaluation of strategies in order to mitigate supply chain risks. The novelty of the model lies in the fact that an analytical tool enables the specific business preferences concerning supply chain risks to be taken into consideration in making the strategic decisions. It provides a practical solution by which companies can systematically assess the risks involved in the supply chain and select appropriate strategies to address them.

Memory Suggestibility under Social Pressure and Inhibitory Control in Preschoolers  [PDF]

Abstract: The current study examined the interaction of inhibitory control and social pressure on young children’s memory suggestibility. Children were administered the Video Memory Suggestibility Scale for Children (VMSSC) and batteries of inhibitory control tasks, and were exposed to different levels of situational social pressures during interviews for memory suggestibility. The findings indicated that inhibitory control played a significantly moderating role in the relationship between social pressure and memory suggestibility. The greater the inhibitory control, the lower the effects of social pressure on the memory suggestibility of children. For the children with lower levels of inhibitory control, the social pressure positively predicted memory suggestibility; but for the children with higher levels of inhibitory control, the social pressure didn’t significantly predict memory suggestibility. So, to a certain extent, memory suggestibility may be a dynamic integration of stable trait and fluctuating state elements. The implications for the essence of memory suggestibility were discussed.

Abstract: Generally, the paper tries to rethink and rediscover the very notion and the identity discourse of Chinese ethnic literatures through multi-ethnic perspectives. According to the survey, the author finds ethnic minorities and their cultures are either under “ethnic erasure” or excluded from many of the orthodox Chinese national literary histories, while writers and artists of Han nationality have always taken the center stage. The misconception of Chinese literature as Han national literature is influenced by the orthodox Chinese national literary histories and hegemonic discourses. With the transformation of literary history from monistic to multivalent, Chinese ethnic minority literatures are moving from the margin to the center in the literary landscape of China, reclaiming their identities and providing another practical methods for Chinese literature to enter into a dialogue with the world from a new perspective.
