The Critical Period of L2 Acquisition Studies: Implications for Researchers in Chinese EFL Context

Abstract: This paper reviews the studies centring on the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH), the major contributor to early L2 instruction in China. It firstly finds out that, in recent studies of CP in L2 acquisition settings (roughly after the year of 2000); a lot more variables besides the age factor have been integrated. The critical period studies in L2 settings has triggered diverse and even competing versions; while in Chinese EFL context, the critical period studies are still in its initial stage, i.e., concentrating on Ages of Onset (AOs) . The paper thus points out the implications of the CP studies in L2 settings for researches in Chinese EFL context.
E2F-1 Directly Regulates Thrombospondin 1 Expression

Abstract: Thrombospondin 1 (TSP1) has been shown to play a critical role in inhibiting angiogenesis, resulting in inhibition of tumor growth and metastases. To figure out TSP1's regulators will lead to reveal its biological function mechanistically. In this study, we show that E2F-1 could activate the transcription of TSP1 by both promoter assays and Northern blot. Analysis of various TSP1 promoter mutant constructs showed that a sequence located ?144/?137 up-stream of the transcriptional initiation site, related to the consensus E2F-responsive sequence, is necessary for the activation. In consistence with up-regulation of TSP-1 activity by over-expression of E2F-1, the knockdown of endogenous E2F-1 inhibited TSP-1 promoter activity significantly, implying that E2F-1 mediated regulation of TSP-1 is relevant in vivo. In addition, E2F-1 could also directly bind to the TSP1 promoter region covering ?144/?137 region as revealed by ChIP assays. Furthermore, the E2F-1-induced activation of TSP1 gene transcription is suppressed by pRB1 in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, the results demonstrate that TSP1 is a novel target for E2F1, which might imply that E2F-1 can affect angiogenesis by modulating TSP1 expression.

Abstract: This paper uses Hirsch index(h-index for short) which is put forward by Hirsch Jorge E,to research and analyze information scientists'frequency of citation ranked at top 50 in China by CSSCI over the period 1998-2005.We calculate h-indices of researchers to evaluate their achievements,examine and compare the relationship between h-index and traditional quantitative indices.

Abstract: The serratedflow of alloy LC9 with different regimes of heat treatment has been investigatedat constant rate of stretching.The critieal strain ε_c at the starting of serrated flow increaseswith the extension of aging.The activation energy of the process is 0.63 e V which is consistentwith the diffusion activation energy of vacancies in A1.The ε_c decreases while the strain rate εincreases,i.e.,with negative strain rate relation.This relation is contrary to that of the an-nealed samples.It shows that the serrated 17ow of annealed sample is controlled bydeformation vaeancies,and that of aged sample is controlled by quenching vacancies.The den-sity and shape of the serration are changed by aging.The mechanism of the above mentionedresults is discussed.

Abstract: The effect of composition and heat treatment on the phase constituent,the size of B2-and DO_3 derived domains and martensitic thermoelastic behaviour in three CuAlNi alloys have been studied by means of metallography,TEM anti X-ray diffraction analyses.It is shown that the structure of martensite changes from 18R_1 into 2H and the transition temperature decreases with the increase of the Al content.Moreover,the size of the B2 and DO_3 derived domains decreases with the increase of cooling rate.

Abstract: The successive alteration o the microstructure from the weld metal zone through weld bond to the heat affected zone of a Cr18Ni13 austenitic-0.45%C steels weld joint was observed in situ using transmission electron microscopy.It was found a new type of microstructure called pearlite-like structure and observed the characteristics of the boundary of dissimilar phases. Based on the definition of various zones of the dissimilar steels weld joint under the optical mi- croscope,the transmission electron microscopic characteristics,including microstructures and compositions,of each zone are described and discussed.

Abstract: Based on the analyses of hot-deformation mechanism of the steel,a new constitutive equationdescribing the flow stress of steels was derived.The flow stress data of steel 55SiMnVB havebeen determined at 900—1200℃,strain rates of 1—100s~(-1)and true-strain of 0.08—0.8.Anavailable evaluated formula on the flows tress has been obtained by means of non-linearregression.It can express clearly the physical process of hot-deformation.
Sodium resonance lidar observations during 2001 Leonid meteor shower over Wuhan

Abstract: Here is the first report on the observation of meteor ablation trails with lidar in China. Four long-lived Na ablation trails were observed during the 18/19 Nov. 2001 Leonid meteor shower with a sodium resonance lidar over Wuhan. The mean altitude of the 4 trails is 97.95 km, consistent with Leonid high entry velocity (-72 km/s). The peak density averages about 3380±3633 cm-3, and the abundance is (2.33±1.49)×108 cm-2 , both of which are higher than those previously observed for sporadic meteor trails. The RMS width is 359 m and the meteor's age is 81 min, indicating that they are long duration meteor trails. These observation results are quite different from those of sporadic meteor trails, but comparable to the 1998 and 1999 Leonid report. Five night observations from 17 Nov. to 23 Nov. suggest that the 2001 Leonid meteor shower does not have a significant impact on the abundance of the background Na layer.

Abstract: 通过高压釜挂片试验,模拟在低磷酸盐-低NakOH工艺下炉水温度、溶解氮、pH值、侵蚀性阴离子Cl^-,SO4^2-等对20A碳钢的腐蚀影响,用电子探针二次电子像或背散射电子法、腐蚀产物的X-射线衍射分要及溶液中总铁离子的测定、计算腐蚀速率等方法综合分析评价腐蚀行为。结果表明,温度升高,碳钢的腐蚀速率增大,大于250℃时腐蚀产物为磁性Fe3O4,表面膜均匀致密,耐蚀性能好;溶解氧对试片成膜影响较大,腐蚀速率随溶解氧浓度减小而明显下降;炉水pH值控制在9.2-9.6合适;侵蚀性阴离子Cl^-,SO4^2-主要引起点蚀,加速腐蚀,阻碍膜的形成。
