Analysis of Technological Developments in the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease through Patent Documents  [PDF]

Abstract: Population aging and the consequent change in the profile of the age pyramid are already a reality the world over. One undeniable effect of this aging process is the significant increase in the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), which is the most common form of dementia, accounting for around 50% - 60% of all cases. AD tends to affect people in their 60 s, becoming progressively more commonplace in older age groups. It is an incurable disease, and patients can live for many years taking medication on a daily basis. This study shows that research into AD is on the rise around the world because the pharmaceutical industry and research institutions are seeking new types of drugs to treat and even cure Alzheimer’s patients. By analyzing patent documents, we map out the potential future treatments for this disease, indicating the leading countries and drugs companies that have invested most in a bid to accelerate progress towards new discoveries about the disease and the development of new drugs.

Abstract: the electrochemical behavior of n-nitrosothiazolidine carboxylic acid (ntac) on gold and hanging mercury electrodes, using the cyclic and square wave voltammetries, was studied. whereas ntac suffer reduction in a single step on the mercury electrode, two peaks appears on the cyclic voltammograms on the gold electrode, one anodic peak overlaying the gold oxide process at 1.2 v and one cathodic peak at -0.41 v vs ag/agcl, kcl 3.0 mol l-1. the cathodic peak depends on the previous oxidation of ntac at the electrode surface, presents irreversible and adsorption controlled characteristics and it is suitable for quantitative purposes.

Abstract:

Intraparenchymal haemorrhage in a pineal germinoma is a very rare, though clinically significant event. We report the first case of a significantly delayed intraparenchymal haemorrhage in a pineal germinoma, 14 days after endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), causing precipitous patient deterioration. We discuss potential contributing pathophysiological factors, and seek to illustrate that knowledge of its occurrence, and associated morbidity, is clinically significant in managing pineal germinoma patients with acute deterioration post obstructive hydrocephalus CSF diversion.

Abstract: the present study intends to present the relevance of cellulose by means of the technological foresight study through citing and cited documents from a patent application (wo 9745131 a1) as indicators of innovation. the european database of patents (espacenet) was used, combining keywords and ipc. the major applicants, countries of publication and uses were mapped. the patent requests collected are mainly distributed in the area of polymers to medical devices and therapeutic methods that utilize cellulose. the results obtained revealed that the us was the main country with studies directed to this technological area (18 patent applications) and the major applicant was the company micro therapeutics inc. therefore, we can understand that this is a promising technology that may reflect in an increase of r&d activities and in the patent deposits in this area.

Abstract: the present study aims to show the importance of patents as an instrument of technological innovation and to assess the relevance of technology of pemfc in brazil by means of the technological monitoring methodology from 1996 to 2005. this study used different industrial property databases (inpi-br, espacenet and dwpi), in order to retrieve the br applications in each database. relevant keywords as "fuel cell" were used in combination with specific ipc (h0im8) in order to assess the main applicants, countries, ipcs and technological innovation over time. in brazil, the country holding more requests in this area is the united states (us) with 53,7% of the patent applications, while brazil (br) accounts for 4,4% of the total requests. it was also observed that the north-american company, utc fuel cells comes on top of the list and that there were no patent applications of brazilian origin (br) in other countries.

Abstract: silicosis, the most prevalent of the pneumoconioses, is caused by inhalation of crystalline silica particles. silica-exposed workers, with or without silicosis, are at increased risk for tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacteria-related diseases. the risk of a patient with silicosis developing tuberculosis is higher (2.8 to 39 times higher, depending on the severity of the silicosis) than that found for healthy controls. various regimens for tuberculosis chemoprophylaxis in patients with silicosis have been studied, all of which present similar efficacy and overall risk reduction to about one half of that obtained with placebo. long-term regimens have potential side effects (particularly hepatotoxicity). in addition, the use of such regimens can jeopardize adherence to treatment. the current guidelines recommend that tuberculin skin tests be performed, and, if positive, that chemoprophylaxis be instituted. there are several possible regimens, varying in terms of the drugs prescribed, as well as in terms of treatment duration. we recommend the use of isoniazid at 300 mg/day (or 10 mg/kg/day) for six months for patients with silicosis, as well as for healthy patients with periods of exposure to silica longer than 10 years and strongly positive tuberculin skin test results (induration > 10 mm). nevertheless, further studies are necessary so that indications, drugs, doses and duration of chemoprophylaxis regimens can be more properly defined.
