A Neural Fuzzy System for Vibration Control in Flexible Structures  [PDF]
Xiaoxu Ji, Wilson Wang
Intelligent Control and Automation (ICA) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ica.2011.23031
Abstract: An adaptive neural fuzzy (NF) controller is developed in this paper for active vibration suppression in flexible structures. A recurrent identification network (RIN) is developed to adaptively identify system dynamics of the plant. A novel recurrent training (RT) technique is suggested to train the RIN so as to optimize nonlinear input-output mapping and to enhance convergence. The effectiveness of the developed controller and the related techniques has been verified experimentally corresponding to different control scenarios. Test results show that the proposed RIN can effectively recognize the time-varying dynamics of the plant. The RT-based hybrid training technique can improve the adaptive capability of the control system to accommodate different system conditions and enhance the training convergence. The developed NF controller is a robust and stable vibration suppression system, and it outperforms other related NF controllers.
A Wavelet Spectrum Technique for Machinery Fault Diagnosis  [PDF]
Derek Kanneg, Wilson Wang
Journal of Signal and Information Processing (JSIP) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jsip.2011.24046
Abstract: Rotary machines are widely used in various applications. A reliable machinery fault detection technique is critically needed in industries to prevent the machinery system’s performance degradation, malfunction, or even catastrophic failures. The challenge for reliable fault diagnosis is related to the analysis of non-stationary features. In this paper, a wavelet spectrum (WS) technique is proposed to tackle the challenge of feature extraction from these non-stationary signatures; this work will focus on fault detection in rolling element bearings. The vibration signatures are first analyzed by a wavelet transform to demodulate representative features; the periodic features are then enhanced by cross-correlating the resulting wavelet coefficient functions over several contributive neighboring wavelet bands. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is examined by experimental tests corresponding to different bearing conditions. Test results show that the developed WS technique is an effective signal processing approach for non-stationary feature extraction and analysis, and it can be applied effectively for bearing fault detection.
A descriptive-comparative study of medications used by older people prior to and following admission to a continuing care facility  [PDF]

Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2012.21002
Abstract: Medications are beneficial for curing or managing acute and chronic illnesses. Medications typically have positive outcomes, although older people are prone to drug-related problems. Community-dwelling seniors are at particularly high risk of polypharmacy, as they tend to receive many prescriptions over time and from different care providers. Continuing-care facility admission presents an excellent opportunity for a comprehensive medication review. A research study was conducted to describe and compare medications taken by community-dwelling seniors prior to and following admission to a continuing-care facility. This pilot project involved data being gathered from the charts of deceased residents, as required by a University Health Research Ethics Board, who had been cared for at one large local continuing-care facility. The facility administrators also approved this study, in part to evaluate their policy to conduct a medication review for all new residents within six weeks of entry. This study revealed a slight but statistically significant reduction in the number of medications following this review. Other issues such as medication interactions and required dosage changes were addressed by this medication review. Although this study was confined to one continuing-care facility and a small number of residents, the findings suggest medication reviews would be beneficial upon admission to all continuing-care facilities, and annually perhaps through other means for older persons living in the community.
Adaptive Force Control of in Web Handling Systems  [PDF]
Andrew Kadik, Wilson Wang
Intelligent Control and Automation (ICA) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ica.2012.34038
Abstract: Winding/unwinding system control is a very important issue to web handling machines. In this paper, a novel adaptive H control strategy is developed for winding process control. A gain scheduling scheme is proposed based on a neural fuzzy approximator to improve the transient response and enhance tension control; the controller’s convergence and adaptive capability can be further improved by an efficient hybrid training algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive H control is verified by experimental tests. Test results show that the developed gain approximator can adaptively accommodate parameter variations in the system and improve the control performance.
Strategies for Energy Efficiency Improvement in Zimbabwean Industries Using the Energy Audit  [PDF]
Wilson Mungwena, Cosmas Rashama
Energy and Power Engineering (EPE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/epe.2013.55038
Abstract:

Energy efficiency is a modern approach for using energy resources economically. Energy audit ensures that every unit of energy gives the maximum in terms of production. This paper brings out the advantages of using energy audit to save future installation of power generation capacity and load reduction of distribution systems. It also envisages the introduction of energy conservation techniques to eliminate sub-standard equipment.

A New Strategy for Solving Two Cosmological Constant Problems in Hadron Physics  [PDF]
Thomas L. Wilson
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2013.45096
Abstract:

A new approach to solving two of the cosmological constant problems (CCPs) is proposed by introducing the Abbott-Deser (AD) method for defining Killing charges in asymptotic de Sitter space as the only consistent means for defining the ground-state vacuum for the CCP. That granted, Einstein gravity will also need to be modified at short-distance nuclear scales, using instead a nonminimally coupled scalar-tensor theory of gravitation that provides for the existence of QCD’s two-phase vacuum having two different zero-point energy states as a function of temperature. Einstein gravity alone cannot accomplish this. The scalar field will be taken from bag theory in hadron physics, and the origin of the bag constant B is accounted for by gravity’s CC as \"\" B—noting that the Higgs mechanism does not account for either the curved-space origin of λ or the mass of composite hadrons. A small Hubble-scale graviton mass mg10-33eV naturally appears external to the hadron bag, induced by λ≠0. This mass is unobservable and gravitationally gauge-dependent. It is shown to be related to the cosmological event horizon in asymptotic de Sitter space.

A Study of Social Engineering in Online Frauds  [PDF]
Brandon Atkins, Wilson Huang
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2013.13004
Abstract:
Social engineering is a psychological exploitation which scammers use to skillfully manipulate human weaknesses and carry out emotional attacks on innocent people. This study examined the contents of 100 phishing e-mails and 100 advance-fee-scam e-mails, and evaluated the persuasion techniques exploited by social engineers for their illegal gains. The analyses showed that alert and account verification were the two primary triggers used to raise the attention of phishing e-mail recipients. These phishing e-mails were typically followed by a threatening tone via urgency. In advance-fee e-mails, timing is a lesser concern; potential monetary gain is the main trigger. Business proposals and large unclaimed funds were the two most common incentives used to lure victims. The study revealed that social engineers use statements in positive and negative manners in combination with authoritative and urgent persuasions to influence innocent people on their decisions to respond. Since it is highly unlikely that online fraud will ever be completely eliminated, the most important strategy that can be directed to combat social engineering attacks is to educate the public on potential threats from perpetrators.

George D. Wilson
Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2014.79069
Abstract: Flow cytometry is a versatile technique to study different aspects of the cell cycle from subpopulations of cells to detailed cell kinetic information. In this paper a basic review of cell kinetic parameters is presented followed by detailed descriptions of the different flow cytometric methodologies that can be used to extract pertinent information for a particular study. The methodologies range from simple DNA profile analysis, the use of bromodeoxyuridine to cell cycle-associated proteins such as the cyclins.
Inconsistencies in Theoretical Physics, with Focus on the Higgs Mechanism  [PDF]
Thomas L. Wilson
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2015.63027
Abstract: In spite of tremendous progress in experimental high-energy physics such as the apparent discovery of the Higgs boson at CERN, there exist a number of inconsistencies in theoretical physics which continue to go either unnoticed or unstated. These include the Higgs mechanism itself as well as recent discussions of problems with inflationary cosmology. The subject will be addressed in the context of this author’s recent paper [1] on the requirement for compatible asymptotic states in the study of the cosmological constant problem (CCP). Inconsistency in the Higgs mechanism is eliminated by using scalar-tensor gravity where the scalar field is a gravitational field with zero spin that represents the spontaneous symmetry breaking potential.
Remote Sensing and GIS Application on Forest Resource Mapping and Monitoring in Bulolo District, Morobe Province  [PDF]

Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection (GEP) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/gep.2019.72003
Abstract: Forest resources monitoring are particularly challenging for tropical forest due to their diverse composition and structure and a wide range of stakeholder’s expectations and requirement. New monitoring approaches and control policies directions are required to meet these different challenges. For the past decades, much of the focus of formal forest monitoring and management policy in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been on large scale conventional harvesting to meet national requirements for economic development, with little attention given to community or small area forest management and monitoring. The current management is considered to be unsustainable and, as forest resources from primary forests are exhausted. This has resulted in extensive cutover forest areas being left to degrade over time. Forest reserve has suffered seriously and if the present trend of deforestation continues; it is just a matter of time when the whole reserve would have been converted to a bare ground. This study therefore examined the integration of remote sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) application on forest resource mapping and monitoring in Bulolo district, Morobe province. Landsat satellite imageries for 1992, 2002 and 2014 were used to classify and identify forest changes through change detection techniques. A GIS database of land use categories and their location within 24 years (1992-2014) were generated and analysed with the aid of GIS analytical functions. This function includes area calculation, overlay, and image differencing, supervised classifications, cross tabulations and map representation. The result shows that population growth (anthropogenic) factors among communities around the natural forest imposes a lot of pressure on the natural forest resources. This should also include consideration of the future usage capacity of the forest resources as well as development of the capacity of local forest owner communities to participate in small scale forest management and utilization.
