Política paranaense do século XIX
Efficacy of conventional and digital radiographic imaging methods for diagnosis of simulated external root resorption
Westphalen, Vania Portela Ditzel;Moraes, Ivaldo Gomes de;Westphalen, Fernando Henrique;
Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572004000200005
Abstract: this in vitro study evaluated and compared the efficacy of conventional (kodak f-speed (insight), kodak) and a digital (drs gnatus system, gnatus) radiographic imaging for diagnosis of simulated external root resorption cavities. human mandibles containing teeth were covered with bovine muscle slices in order to simulate the soft tissues. nine teeth out of each group of teeth were investigated. initially, three periapical radiographs of each tooth were taken using a tube shift technique with mesial and distal angulations in both methods. all teeth were subsequently extracted and had 0.7 and 1.0-mm deep cavities prepared on their buccal, mesial and distal surfaces at the cervical, middle and apical thirds. steel cylinder burs (dormer? - hss) with 0.7 and 1.0-mm diameter were used. each tooth was replaced on its socket and new radiographs were taken. three examiners, an endodontist (1), a radiologist (2) and a general dentist (3), evaluated the images. results were compared by z-test and showed a higher number of cavities detected by the digital method compared to the conventional, regardless of the deepness of the cavity. in decreasing order, examiners 2, 3 and 1 exhibited different potentials of detection of cavities with the conventional method. examiners 1 and 3 exhibited superior potential than examiner 2 for detection of cavities of different sizes with the digital method.
Pinch analysis based on rigorous physical properties
WESTPHALEN, D. L.;MACIEL, M.R .WOLF;
Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-66321999000300006
Abstract: pinch analysis is a methodology that allows the calculation of minimum hot and cold utilities consumption in a process from the knowledge of some data of the hot and cold streams. these energy targets are calculated through the problem table method, that is based on the description of the process using constant heat capacity flowrates. this hypothesis is not valid in certain situations, particularly when phase changes are involved. a modification to problem table method is proposed, that allows the use of enthalpies rigorously calculated from thermodynamic correlations. one case study is provided, where an error of 240% in hot target is verified if phase changes are neglected.
Pinch analysis of evaporation systems
Westphalen, D.L.;Maciel, M.R. Wolf;
Brazilian Journal of Chemical Engineering , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-66322000000400017
Abstract: evaporation systems are separation processes widely used in chemical industries. some guidelines can be found in the literature for the process integration of multiple effect evaporators. in the published methodologies some aspects are neglected as boiling point rise, effect of pressure on latent heat of water, sensible heat of liquid streams, heat of mixing, effects configuration and inclusion of accessories. in this work, a new graphical representation for the integration of multiple effect evaporators was developed, using rigorous physical properties. from this representation, an algorithm for optimization of bleed streams was conceived using the concepts of pinch analysis. as a case study, a crystal glucose plant was optimized using this new methodology. the optimization of bleed streams showed as result a steam consumption 16% smaller than a similar previous study. from energy and capital costs, it is shown that the integrated evaporator exhibits a total cost 14% smaller than the non-integrated configuration.
Pileate polypores from Araucaria Forests in Southern Brazil
Westphalen, Mauro Carpes;Silveira, Rosa Mara Borges da;
Hoehnea , 2013, DOI: 10.1590/S2236-89062013000100003
Abstract: during a survey of polypores in the municipality of s?o francisco de paula, rio grande do sul state, brazil, 20 pileate species previously unregistered for the area were found and identified. antrodia malicola, coltricia aff. duportii, and microporellus brasiliensis are new records for rio grande do sul state. comments on the 20 newly recorded species and an identification key for the studied area are presented.
Discurso.

Scattering phases for fermion-fermion scattering in the Gross-Neveu model
M. Goeckeler,H. A. Kastrup,J. Viola,J. Westphalen
Physics , 1995, DOI: 10.1016/0920-5632(96)00185-5
Abstract: We extract scattering phases for fermion-fermion scattering from Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Gross-Neveu model. This is done by means of L\"uscher's method, which exploits the volume dependence of the energies of two-particle states. The results are compared with the analytical predictions.
Scattering phases in the broken phase of the 4-d O(4) non-linear sigma-model
J. Westphalen,F. Zimmermann,M. Goeckeler,H. A. Kastrup
Physics , 1993, DOI: 10.1016/0920-5632(94)90448-0
Abstract: Using Luescher's method we determine the elastic scattering phases in the broken phase of the 4-dimensional O(4) non-linear sigma-model from the two-particle energy spectrum in a Monte-Carlo study on finite lattices. In the isospin-0-channel we observe the sigma-resonance and extract its mass and its width. In all scattering channels investigated the results are consistent with perturbative calculations.
