Abstract: The prevalence of obesity is more than 20% in many developed countries and it increases in developing countries. Obesity is associated with metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, digestive diseases, and cancers. Although other specific treatments for these complications exist, weight loss is still an essential intervention in obesity and its complications. Therapeutic life change, behavior modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery are major approaches to weight loss. In addition, medicine used in diabetes such as Glucagon-like peptide-1 analogues may be a new type of medicine for obesity, at least for those obese patients with diabetes.

Introduction In 2005 the International Association for the Study of Obesity reported that the prevalence of obesity, defined by BMI ≥ 30?kg/m2 is more than 20% in many European countries [1]. Future obesity for adults in the United States was projected on the basis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Study. By 2030, 86.3% American adults will be overweight or obese; 51.1% of them will be obese. Total health-care costs attributable to obesity/overweight would double every decade to 2030, accounting for 16–18% of total US health-care costs [2]. In China, a fast developing country, the prevalence of overweight and obesity also increased in the last two decades. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in 2008 in Chinese population aged 20 years or older reached 24.9%, 4.9% in women and 30.8% and 6.0% in men, respectively [3]. Timely and effective development and implementation of corrective approaches are needed to avoid the catastrophic health and social consequences. 2. Obesity and Chronic Diseases Obesity is associated with a cluster of metabolic risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD), known as metabolic syndrome. Abdominal obesity is an essential component of this syndrome, other components include impaired glucose regulation and type 2 diabetes mellitus; hypertriglyceridemia and/or low serum HDL-cholesterol levels; hypertension. In addition, increased serum levels of C-reactive protein; apolipoprotein B; small, dense LDL particles are also associated with abdominal obesity [4, 5]. The epidemic of obesity is accompanied by the increase of these metabolic risk factors. The drastic increase in the prevalence of obesity has played an important role in the spread of diabetes not only in the United States [6, 7], but also in China. TEM STUDY ON STRUCTURE OF GRAPHITE IN RE-TREATED CAST IRON

Abstract: The thin foil samples of rare earth treated cast iron. were analysed by means of TEM. The results confirmed that the <0001> direction of graphite crystal is perpendicular to the "annual ring" lines revealed by ion bombardment. Each cone in a nodular graphite is composed of many microcrystallites with a small angle each other in their orientations. The morie patterns in the TEM picture of the graphite were also analysed. It is considered that they result from some structure defects such as twins existing in the graphite.
A Comparative Study on Competitiveness of KIBS in HK and Singapore  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the competitiveness of Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) in Hong Kong and Singapore from 2005 to 2015. In terms of methodology, we employ three indices—Export Market Share (MS), Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Relative Trade Advantage (RTA) to measure competitiveness in selected sectors. Results show that although Hong Kong and Singapore have taken up greater world market share, neither of them shows strong comparative advantage in overall KIBS. Based on the RCA index, Singapore has stronger comparative advantage than Hong Kong on overall KIBS, while the values of RTA index reveal reverse conclusion. Both the RCA and the RTA indices exhibit the consistent result that the greatest competitive advantage is earned by financial services sector in Hong Kong as well as Singapore. Of particular note, according to the values of two revealed comparative advantage indices, neither Hong Kong nor Singapore has comparative advantage in charge for the use of intellectual property sector.
Ethanol Vapor Sensing Properties of Triangular Silver Nanostructures Based on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance

Abstract: A sensitive volatile organic vapor sensor based on the LSPR properties of silver triangular nanoprisms is proposed in this paper. The triangular nanoprisms were fabricated by a nanosphere lithography (NSL) method. They have sharp vertices and edges, and are arranged in an ideal hexangular array. These characteristics ensure that they exhibit an excellent LSPR spectrum and a high sensitivity to the exterior environment changes. The LSPR spectra responding to ethanol vapor and four other volatile organic vapors—acetone, benzene, hexane and propanol—were measured with a UV-vis spectrometer in real time. Compared with the other four vapors, ethanol exhibits the highest sensitivity (~0.1 nm/mg L?1) and the lowest detection limit (~10 mg/L) in the spectral tests. The ethanol vapor test process is also fast (~4 s) and reversible. These insights demonstrate that the triangular nanoprism based nano-sensor can be used in ethanol vapor detection applications.
Effects of pistachios on body weight in Chinese subjects with metabolic syndrome

Abstract: To investigate the impact of different dosages of pistachios on body weight, blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose and insulin in subjects with metabolic syndrome.Ninety subjects with metabolic syndrome (consistent with 2005 International Diabetes Federation metabolic syndrome standard without diabetes) were enrolled in three endocrinology outpatient clinics in Beijing. All subjects received dietary counseling according to the guidelines of the American Heart Association Step I diet. After a 4 week run-in, subjects were randomized to consume either the recommended daily serving of 42 g pistachios (RSG), a higher daily serving of 70 g pistachio (HSG) or no pistachios (DCG) for 12 weeks.Subjects in all three groups were matched at baseline for BMI: DCG 28.03 ± 4.3; RSG 28.12 ± 3.22; and HSG 28.01 ± 4.51 kg/m2. There were no significant changes in body weight or BMI in any groups during the study nor any change from baseline at any time point in any group. During the entire study, there were no significant differences in waist-to-hip ratio among the groups or any change from baseline in any group (DCG -0.00 ± 0.03, RSG -0.01 ± 0.02 and HSG 0.01 ± 0.04). There were no significant differences detected among groups in triglycerides, fasting glucose and 2 hour postprandial glucose following a 75 gram glucose challenge. Exploratory analyses demonstrated that glucose values 2 h after a 75 gm glucose challenge were significantly lower at week 12 compared with baseline values in the HSG group (-1.13 ± 2.58 mmol/L, p = 0.02), and a similar trend was noted in the RSG group (-0.77 ± 2.07 mmol/L, p = 0.06), while no significant change was seen in the DCG group (-0.15 ± 2.27 mmol/L, p = 0.530). At the end of study, serum triglyceride levels were significantly lower compared with baseline in the RSG group (-0.38 ± 0.79 mmol/L, p = 0.018), but no significant changes were observed in the HSG or DCG groups.Despite concerns that pistachio nut consumption may promote weight gain, t
Microwave Assisted Synthesis of Cobalt Phosphate Nanoparticles and Their Antiproliferation against Human Lung Cancer Cells and Primary Osteoblasts in Vitro

Abstract: In this research, different nanostructures of cobalt phosphate nanoparticles were successfully prepared. Platelike and spherical cobalt phosphate were made by microwave synthesis method without any use of capping agent as structure directors. The reaction was completed under two different microwave irradiation power (500 W and 800 W) and times (5 min and 10 min) for the production of two types of cobalt phosphate nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The SEM images showed that the flowerlike nanostructure was an arrangement of cobalt phosphate plates with thickness of 80 nm and the average size of spherical cobalt phosphate nanoparticles was about 40 nm. Antiproliferation activity of cobalt phosphate nanoparticles as a function of particle concentration against human lung cancer cells and primary osteoblasts were carried out in vitro. The spherical nanoparticles showed better antiproliferation activity than the platelike nanoparticles and primary osteoblasts were more sensitive than human lung cancer cells to cobalt phosphate nanoparticles.
Effects of Time Point Measurement on the Reconstruction of Gene Regulatory Networks

Abstract: With the availability of high-throughput gene expression data in the post-genomic era, reconstruction of gene regulatory networks has become a hot topic. Regulatory networks have been intensively studied over the last decade and many software tools are currently available. However, the impact of time point selection on network reconstruction is often underestimated. In this paper we apply the Dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) to construct the Arabidopsis gene regulatory networks by analyzing the time-series gene microarray data. In order to evaluate the impact of time point measurement on network reconstruction, we deleted time points one by one to yield 11 distinct groups of incomplete time series. Then the gene regulatory networks constructed based on complete and incomplete data series are compared in terms of statistics at different levels. Two time points are found to play a significant role in the Arabidopsis gene regulatory networks. Pathway analysis of significant nodes revealed three key regulatory genes. In addition, important regulations between genes, which were insensitive to the time point measurement, were also identified.

Abstract: The “order-disorder” model was adopted to calculate the lattice vacancies related to the com-position change in Ni_3Al alloys.A great deal of vacancies,i.e.,the non-stoichiometric vacan-cies,may exist in the Ni_3Al alloys containing Al over stoichiometry,i.e.25 at.-%.This wasconfirmed by the positron annihilation technique.Therefore,the influence of Al content on theenhancing behaviour of B towards the ductility of Ni_3Al alloys can be understood by theinteraction of non-stoiehiometric vacancies and B atoms.

Under the assumption that f can be suitably decomposed, we prove approximation solvability results for the above equation by applying the abstract continuation type theorem of Petryshyn on A-proper mappings.
