Recent developments in fiber optic spectral white-light interferometry

Abstract: Recent developments in spectral white-light interferometry (WLI) are reviewed. Firstly, the techniques for obtaining optical spectrum are introduced. Secondly, some novel measurement techniques are reviewed, including the improved peak-to-peak WLI, improved wavelength-tracking WLI, Fourier transform WLI, and 3 × 3 coupler based WLI. Furthermore, a hybrid measurement for the intensity-type sensors, interferometric sensors, and fiber Bragg grating sensors is achieved. It is shown that these developments have assisted in the progress of WLI.
Cooperative Advertising in a Two-Stage Supply Chain with Network Externalities  [PDF]

Abstract:
A two-stage game is developed with network externalities where, besides pricing decisions, the retailer and manufacturer can determine their advertising investments and advertising participation rates for each stage. In addition to the full cooperation advertising model, three part cooperation advertising models are established. We develop propositions and insights from the comparison of these models. Our main findings are as follows: 1) the equilibrium solutions critically depend on the effects of network externalities; 2) the optimal choice in a two-stage game is to achieve full cooperation; and 3) a second-best choice for the manufacturer is to share the retailer’s advertising in the first stage. Our research results have guiding significance for supply chain member’s decision-making in local advertising practice.

Abstract: A nanocomposite of nanometer-sized magnetic granular ε-FexN embedded in a nonmagnetic amorphous boron nitride matrix was prepared by ball milling mixture of α-Fe and hexagonal boron nitride in argon atmosphere. The grain size of the ε-FexN alloy was about 10–20 nm. The nitrogen concentration in the ε-FexN alloy increases with extending milling time. Both thermodynamic calculation and the present experiment show that iron and nitrogen atoms have higher alloying driving force than iron and boron atoms. Analyses of thermodynamics and kinetics about formation of the ε-FexN alloy suggested that the formation of the ε-FexN alloy is related to amorphization of the hexagonal boron nitride and refinement of the α-Fe. It was found from the present experiment that a critical grain size of the α-Fe reacting with nitrogen in the amorphous boron nitride is about 8 nm.
A 75-year-old man with renal insufficiency and eosinophilia after coronary angiography

Abstract: A 75-year-old male patient received esophageal carci-noma surgery in Oct 2005. The next day of the operation, he had dyspnea, chest discomfort and sweating when he was on some activities. ECG showed ST segment elevation and T wave depression in leads VI "6. Biochemical markers of myocardial necrosis were elevated. A diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction was made. After anticoagulant, antiplatelet and vasodilator therapy, his symptoms relieved in 3 hours. One week before the admission, a visible edema of the left lower extremity occurred. Doppler ultrasound showed thrombotic occlusion of the left superficial femoral vein and popliteal vein. With further anticoagulant and va-sodilator therapy, the edema disappeared. He was admitted to our hospital for further assessment and treatment on Nov 3, 2005. Diagnosis on admission were coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction of anterior wall, esophageal car-cinoma after surgery and thrombosis of left lower extremity vein. Blood, urine and stool routine tests, liver and renal functions were normal. Doppler ultrasound showed athero-sclerosis of both lower extremities, severe narrowed inferior part of right superficial femoral artery and unclear image of right posterior tibial artery (occlusion?). Echocardiography showed segmental wall motion abnormalities in distal part of anterior wall of left ventricle and the apex. LVEF (Simpson method) was 48%.......

FBX8 Acts as an Invasion and Metastasis Suppressor and Correlates with Poor Survival in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract: Background F-box only protein 8 (FBX8), a novel component of F-box proteins, is lost in several cancers and has been associated with invasiveness of cancer cells. However, its expression pattern and role in the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma remain unclear. This study investigated the prognostic significance of FBX8 in hepatocellular carcinoma samples and analyzed FBX8 function in hepatocellular carcinoma cells by gene manipulation. Methodology The expression of FBX8 was detected in 120 cases of clinical paraffin-embedded hepatocellular carcinoma tissues, 20 matched pairs of fresh tissues and five hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines by immunohistochemistry with clinicopathological analyses, real-time RT-PCR or Western blot. The correlation of FBX8 expression with cell proliferation and invasion in five HCC cell lines was analyzed. Moreover, loss of function and gain of function assays were performed to evaluate the effect of FBX8 on cell proliferation, motility, invasion in vitro and metastasis in vivo. Conclusions We found that FBX8 was obviously down-regulated in HCC tissues and cell lines (P<0.05). The FBX8 down-regulation correlated significantly with poor prognosis, and FBX8 status was identified as an independent significant prognostic factor. Over-expression of FBX8 decreased proliferation, migration and invasion in HepG2 and 97H cells, while knock-down of FBX8 in 7721 cells showed the opposite effect. FBX8 negatively correlated with cell proliferation and invasion in 7701, M3, HepG2 and 97H cell lines. In vivo functional assays showed FBX8 suppressed tumor growth and pulmonary metastatic potential in mice. Our results indicate that down-regulation of FBX8 significantly correlates with invasion, metastasis and poor survival in hepatocellular carcinoma patients. It may be a useful biomarker for therapeutic strategy and control in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment.

Abstract: This paper proposes a new method of calculating stochastic field. It is an improvement of the midpoint method of stochastic field. The vibration equation of a system is transformed to a static problem by using the Newmark method and the Taylor expansion is extended for the structural vibration analysis with uncertain factors. In order to develop computational efficiency and allow for efficient storage, the Conjugate Gradient method (CG) is also employed. An example is given, respectively, and calculated results are compared to validate the proposed methods.
