Abstract: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by a chronic inflammatory process, and new biomarkers have been studied as promising molecules for understanding the inflammation in its pathophysiology. The hemolysis and the release of molecules associated to the hemoglobin (Hb) catabolism, such as free Hb, iron, and heme, generating a oxidant environment with production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The immune system plays a very important role in the inflammation, with cells secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. There is also a nitric oxide (NO) resistance state, with an impaired NO bioactivity, leading to a vascular dys-function; activation of platelet, leukocytes, erythrocytes, and endothelial cells, with expression of adhesion molecules and its ligands, and several receptors, that altogether participate at inflammatory process. During inflammation, there is an increase of dendritic cells (DCs) expresse toll like receptors (TLR), but the role of DCs and TLR in SCD pathogenesis is unclear. Also, there are molecules contributing for enhance the endothelium dysfunction, such as homocysteine that has been associated with vascular complications in the pathology of other diseases and it may contribute to the vascular complications presented by SCD patients. Circulating microparticules (MPs) levels are augmented in several diseases and have been described in SCD, where cells membrane compounds are associated to cell’s thrombotic and coagulation state, such as tissue factor and phosphatidylserine (PS), which may contribute to endothelial dysfunction. The knowledge of all these biomarkers may contribute to new therapeutic approach discover, improveing SCD patient life quality.

Abstract: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetically inherited hemolytic disorder characterized by chronic inflammation. Cytokine expression affects the pivotal pathways that contribute to disease pathogenesis, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. SCA is associated with a proinflammatory state, and an enhanced inflammatory response occurs during vasoocclusive crisis. The immune system thus plays an important role in this inflammatory condition, with several cell types secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute to the occurrence of common cyclical events in SCA patients, such as hemolysis, vascular occlusion and inflammation. Studies of these cytokines and chemokines in SCA patients have clarified the mechanisms that underlie this disease and highlighted the need for a better understanding of cytokine participation in SCA pathophysiology.

Abstract: Notch signalling plays a central role in the mechanisms regulating neuronal differentiation in the vertebrate nervous system. The transcriptional repressors encoded by Hes genes are the main effectors of this pathway, acting in neural progenitors during the lateral inhibition process to repress proneural genes and inhibit differentiation. However, Hes6 genes seem to behave differently: they are expressed in differentiating neurons and facilitate the activity of proneural genes in promoting neurogenesis. Still, the molecular mechanisms underlying this unique function of Hes6 genes are not yet understood.

Abstract:

Logistics and supply chain management is an area that evolved deeply in the past years, integrating developments of other areas of knowledge, both entrepreneurial and general. In this paper, a perspective of the evolution of logistics and supply chain management is somehow designed. Traditionally, one may find logistics and supply chain management in friction with marketing and claiming for its own space. Nowadays, it seems difficult to see internal (logistics) versus external (marketing) wars and different orientations between marketing and logistics because they are both service and relations oriented. Simple transactions have been substituted, long time ago, for sustainable relations in the area of logistics and supply chain management. Finally, a more service oriented logic has been the footprint of logistics and supply chain management in current days and not, as pretended for some current rows of investigation, a simple transaction approach under a goods dominant logic. Logistics and supply chain management is nowadays in parallel with an S-D logic (service dominant logic) because it is an area where relations matter, where sustainable links between networks of companies are crucial and where service is key in order to accommodate the contemporary thoughts and practices in the area. The main purpose of the paper is to stress the point that logistics and supply chain management is an area of service and value creation (or co-creation) and not a simple area of goods exchange and simple transactions.

Abstract: one of the major interests in the frontier between biomechanics and physiology is the study of efficiency. the efficiency expresses the relationship between the mechanical work and the related energy expenditure. the study of efficiency, in the water, becomes more complex due to difficulties in quantifying, with accuracy, the energetic exchanges between the swimmer and the environment. however, swimming is one of the most studied sports, in order to understand its bioenergetical implications and the efficiency?s repercussions of different locomotion processes. "state of the art" about human locomotion in water, with special reference to swimming techniques is thus presented.
Determinant kinantropometric factors in swimming

Abstract: The aim of this work is to present a bibliographic review, based on the specialized literature, of the kineantropometric characteristics of swimmers and their importance for swimming performance. The main conclusions were: (i) swimmers are taller and heavier than the general population; (ii) swimmers present an high index of arm span/height (explained by a large biacromial diameter and long the upper arm); (iii) high values for the biacromial/bicristal diameter ratio were found, offering a lower drag coeffi cient; (iv) high length and surface area arm and leg values were observed (which positively infl uence their propulsion capacity); (v) elite male swimmers presents a ectomorph-endomorph somatotype and elite female swimmers are central or balanced mesomorphs (vi) swimmers exhibit a higher percentage of body mass than other athletes, which may benefi t positively their floatation. RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma revis o bibliográfi ca das principais características cineantropométricas do nadador e a forma como estas infl uenciam a sua presta o na modalidade. As principais conclus es obtidas foram as seguintes: (i) os nadadores s o mais altos e pesados do que a popula o em geral; (ii) os nadadores apresentam um elevado índice envergadura/ altura, explicitando valores elevados do diametro biacromial e do comprimento dos MS; (iii) verifi ca-se uma elevada raz o entre os diametros biacromial e bicristal, traduzindo um fator decisivo na modalidade: a promo o de um coefi ciente de arrasto inferior; (iv) foram observados elevados valores de comprimento e superfície dos membros dos nadadores (afetando positivamente a sua capacidade propulsiva); (v) os nadadores de elite apresentam um somatótipo médio ecto-mesomorfo e as nadadoras s o centrais ou mesomorfas equilibradas; (vi) como grupo, os nadadores apresentam um maior percentual de massa gorda do que outros desportistas, fator este que poderá beneficiálos relativamente à sua flutuabilidade
Study of ammonia emission in the NGC 6334 region

Abstract: The region centered in the NGC 6334 I(N) radio continuum source was surveyed in an extension of 6 arcmin in right ascension and 12 arcmin in declination, in the NH3(J,K) = (1,1) transition, using the Itapetinga radio telescope. The spectra show non-LTE behavior, and gradients of velocity and line-width were detected along the region. A detailed analysis of the spectra showed that the surveyed region is composed of at least three overlapped sources related to regions that are in different stages of star formation: NGC 6334 I, associated with an already known molecular bipolar outflow, NGC 6334 I(N)w, the brightest ammonia source, coincidental with the continuum source NGC 6334 I(N), and NGC 6334 I(N)e, weaker, more extended and probably less evolved than the others. The physical parameters of the last two sources were calculated in non-LTE conditions, assuming that their spectra are the superposition of the narrow line spectra produced by small dense clumps. The H2 density, NH3 column density, kinetic temperature, diameter and mass of the clumps were found to be very similar in the two regions, but the density of clumps is lower in the probably less evolved source NGC 6334 I(N)e. Differences between the physical parameters derived assuming LTE and non-LTE conditions are also discussed in this work.
