Evaluation of Cathodic Arc Deposited Thick CrAlSiN Coatings by Erosion Test  [PDF]

Abstract:

CrAlSiN with thickness up to 16 μm was deposited on tungsten carbide via multi-deposition process by cathode arc deposition technique. Scratch and water-sand jet impingement erosion tests were carried out to evaluate the adhesion by determining the worn surface of the coatings. Results showed that the failure mode of the adhesion can be concluded that the weak bond of each CrAlSiN layer as compared to the strong bond between the coating and substrate. The average surface roughness of the coatings before the erosion test was about the same level. After the erosion test of 30 minutes, the eroded CrAlSiN coatings exhibited improved average surface roughness as compared to the original CrAlSiN coatings. Further increasing the erosion up to 60 minutes, the wear and minor peeling of the CrAlSiN coating between each layer was observed. A further research to improve the bond strength between each layer was needed.

Abstract:

In this study, the transfer method is employed to add hydrophilic SiO2 nanopowders to a Pt/C catalyst ink to form an anode catalyst layer on a proton exchange membrane (PEM). The SiO2-layered membrane electrode assembly improves the performance of the PEM under low- or zero-humidification conditions. When the PEM fuel cell (PEMFC) undergoes electrochemical reaction, the moisture content of the PEM exhibits a substantial influence on the transmission of protons. To ensure the moisture content remains high, an external humidifier is typically employed to humidify the majority of PEMFCs. However, self-humidifying PEMFCs could utilize the water produced by the fuel cell reaction, thereby eliminating the need for an external humidifier. In this study, various SiO2 loadings were added to an anode catalyst layer, and the cell temperature and gas humidification conditions were adjusted to determine the influence of the SiO2 loadings on the fuel cell performance. The results show that adding SiO2 is preferable to not adding SiO2 when the fuel cell temperature is 50°C.

Sodium Gill Potential as a Tool to Monitor Valve Closure Behavior in Freshwater Clam Corbicula fluminea in Response to Copper

Abstract: Valve closure behavior in freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea is a biologically sensitive endpoint. The purpose of this paper was to derive an electrophysiological response model of C. fluminea to assess copper (Cu)-sodium (Na) interactions in gill membrane, whereby valve closure behavior and Cu toxicity could be monitored. The proposed model was based on the integration of Cu bioavailability, Na and Cu internalizations, and electrochemically-based gill potentials. Based on Na active transport under non-equilibrium conditions, predicted gill potential of -8.2 mV agreed reasonably well with published the measured transepithelial potential of -7 mV in C. fluminea. Our proposed framework captured the general features observed in model applications including: (i) 50% inhibitory Cu2+ activities for Na membrane potential (ENa) and uptake rate (JNa) were estimated to be 0.072 and 0.043 mM, respectively, with a stoichiometry of 3Cu2+: 1ENa and 1JNa; (ii) the external Cu2+-dependent internal Na concentration could be parsimoniously estimated, and (iii) the site-specific clam gill potentials could be monitored. Here we provided a new approach to monitor waterborne metal toxicity to reduce the nationwide economic losses due to bans on harvesting of contaminated clam and the potential risks to the health of clams.

The concept of “PEC’ was first proposed by Bonetti et al. to identify a novel cell type, which exhibited an epithelioid appearance, clear-eosinophilic cytoplasm, and a perivascular distribution in renal angiomyolipoma (AML), clear-cell sugar tumor (CCST) of the lung, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) [2]. Since that time, PEComas have been reported at a wide variety of anatomic sites [3-5]. In the female genital tract, PEComas most frequently affect the uterus [6]. AML, LAM, sclerosing PEComa, and PEComa-not otherwise specified (NOS) were described in the uterus [6-16]. We herein report a unique case of microscopic endometrial PEC nodules, which have never been reported in the literature, and they perhaps represent the earliest manifestation of uterine PEComas. We discuss their histologic and immunohistochemical features, the relationship between the microscopic PEC nodules and PEComas of the female genital tract, and their clinical significance.A 29-year-old woman had suffered from abnormal vaginal bleeding and severe dysmenorrhea for a long time. A Hybrid Feature Selection Method Using Modular Perceptron Networks

Abstract: In this study, we propose an efficient hybrid feature subset selection method to overcome the curse of dimensionality and to obtain good learning performance on classification problems. The proposed method includes two steps: Scheming an evaluation function to create the rank of the feature significance, constructing a new Binary Search Feature Subset (BSFS) algorithm to generate the optimum feature subset. We have applied the proposed method on a Modular Perceptron Network (MPN) to learn the realworld datasets. It shows that from the experimental results the feature of the input data can be decreased largely (less 75%~88%), the data presentations are reduced (less 67%~ 91%) and a small size MPNs can be procured with learning and testing performance maintained as the good level as before.
The Simulation of Typhoon Chanchu Infrared Channels Brightness Temperature

Abstract: The high cloud coverage in the tropics makes it easier for numerically simulated satellite radiation data,especially those in the infrared channels,to be subject to clouds.Improved simulation of satellite-derived temperature of brightness blackbody(TBB) data for tropical synoptic systems helps to verify numerical models for the tropics and improve the direct use of satellite information in assimilation.The work first uses the Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF) model to simulate the three-dimensional meteorological field of typhoon Chanchu,including the cloud structure,and physical quantities,such as total cloud fractions and cloud top pressure,are diagnostically studied.Then,version 8.7 of a fast radiative transfer model for TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder(RTTOV) is used to simulate the infrared TBB of the storm measured with the High resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder(HIRS) and simulations are compared for conditions with and without clouds.It is shown in the results that the RTTOV model cannot simulate the structure of Typhoon Chanchu accurately and the simulated temperature is generally higher than the observation if the cloud effect is not taken into account under such extreme condition as the typhoon.By including the threedimensional structure of clouds simulated by meteorological models,the RTTOV model can simulate the spiral structure on the infrared channels of HIRS/3 (like channels 4-10 and channels 13-19).Clouds have positive effect on the simulation of infrared channels that altitudes of peak energy are below the cloud layers.The TBB simulated with the scheme in this paper reproduces the structural characteristics of the typhoon and is well correlated with the observation.It shows that the scheme is one of the ways to verify model simulation.TBB of some infrared channels has the potential applicability in data assimilation of tropical synoptic systems.

Abstract: In order to construct three dimension model of architectural solid, a new solution method for geometrical model based on single vision of hybrid modeling system has been developed. In this method, edge profiles were pickup from image first. Space parameter equations of 3D solid was constructed by adding additional restriction condition. By solving the equations, space coordination and others parameter of 3D solid was obtained. At last, visual reality was achieved by introducing texture pickup and transition technique. Experiments has proved that the method has high modeling efficiency and wide practicability. It can be used for modeling of most architectural solids.

Abstract: Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are relatively common tumors containing fatty tissue,blood vessels, and muscular cells in various proportions. Typical AMLs can be diagnosedwithout histological confirmation by a combination of ultrasound and computed tomographyimaging in up to 95% of cases. In contrast, simultaneous involvement of the kidney, renalvein, or lymph nodes is uncommon and might be confused with a metastasizing malignanttumor. We present a pathologically proven case of the very uncommon simultaneousinvolvement of the kidney and the lymph nodes in AML.
“珍珠”台风卫星红外通道亮温的数值模拟

Abstract: 热带地区云的覆盖率高,卫星辐射资料特别是红外通道的数值模拟容易受到云的影响,提高台风等热带天气系统卫星亮温资料的模拟能力,有助于热带地区数值模式的检验以及提高卫星资料直接同化的水平。首先,利用天气研究和预报模式(WeatherResearchandForecastingModel,简称WRF)对“珍珠”台风的三维气象场,包括云结构特征,进行了模拟,并诊断分析了总云量、云顶气压等物理量;然后,结合快速辐射传输模式(fastradiativetransfermodelforTOVS,简称RTTOV)8.7版对“珍珠”台风的高分辨率红外辐射探测仪3型(HighResolutionInfraredRadiationSounder,简称HIRS/3)红外辐射亮温进行了模拟,并且比较了有云和无云条件下的模拟结果。结果表明,如果不考虑云的影响,RTTOV模式无法模拟出台风的结构特征;结合三维云特征的模拟量,RTTOV模式可以较好地模拟出HIRS/3第4~10、13~19通道的辐射亮温。加入云结构特征对峰值能量高度在云层以下的红外通道的模拟有正面影响,该方案既可以作为检验模式模拟的一种手段,同时也表明红外资料在热带天气系统的资料同化领域具有潜在的应用能力。
Indigenous Purple Vegetable Extracts Protect against Hydrogen Peroxide-Induced DNA Damage in Human Lymphocytes  [PDF]

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to identify the antioxidants in acid hydrolysates of six of Taiwan’s indigenous purple-leaved vegetables (IPLV), including purple-leaved sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L. Lamark), purple-leaved gynura line 1 (Gynura bicolor D.C.), purple-leaved gynura line 2 (Gynura bicolor D.C.), purple-leaved perilla line 1 (Perilla frutescents L. Britton), bicolored-leaved perilla line 2 (Perilla frutescens L. Britton), and heartleaf houttuynia (Houttuynia cordata Thumb.). Their antioxidant activity and ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage was also evaluated. The antioxidants identified included flavonoids, anthocyanidins and flavonols. Both purple-leaved perilla line 1 and bicolored-leaved perilla line 2 were found to be abundant in cynidin, malvidin, and myricetin. Moreover, purple-leaved sweet potato and heartleaf houttuynia were found to be abundant in quercetin. Purple-leaved sweet potato and purple-leaved perilla line 1 contained significantly higher inhibition percentages of conjugated diene formation than other vegetables. Purple-leaved sweet potato, heartleaf houttuynia, purple-leaved perilla line 1, and bicolored-leaved perilla line 2 had better inhibition percentages of tail DNA% and tail moment in the study. In conclusion, the abovementioned four indigenous purple-leaved vegetables abounded in antioxidants had strong antioxidant activity for protecting DNA in lymphocytes from oxidative damages.
