A Framework of the Carbon-Neutral Auditing for Enterprises in China  [PDF]

This paper focuses on the framework of carbon-neutral auditing in China, and builds three modes to clarify the carbon neutral auditing in different circumstances which include individual enterprise, enterprises in a supply chain and enterprises in an eco-industry park meeting with the concept of circular economy. At the same time, it clarified the possible applications of carbon-neutral reports.

Considerable reserves of oil sands are located in northernAlberta. Exploitation of these reserves has been instrumental in the development of theAlbertaeconomy. Mining and processing techniques, including “in situ” processing and surface mining/aqueous treatment, are presented. Oil assisted flotation and solvent extraction are discussed as possible future processing alternatives. Subsequent froth treatment and refining methods are described. The rapid expansion of bitumen processing in theFort McMurrayarea has drastically affectedAlberta’s economic, political and social policy. Corresponding strain has been placed on the regional ecosystem. A comparison between wind and bitumen as sources of energy is offered.
Weighing the Pros and Cons: Transformation of Angle of View for Three Gorges Dam  [PDF]

Abstract: Three Gorges Dam Project is the world’s largest water-control and hydraulic-electric project in the 21st century. However, it has been shrouded in controversy since long even before it began construction in 1994. On one hand, the benefits of the Three Gorges Dam are flood control, power generation, navigation, aquaculture, tourism, ecological protection, environmental purification, development-oriented resettlement, transfer of water from southern China to northern China, and water supply and irrigation. On the other hand, the drawbacks of the dam are environmental impact, effect on local culture and aesthetic values, and sedimentation. In an environmental impact point of view, the Three Gorges Dam shows evidence that it has more advantages than disadvantages. Thus, by carefully balancing the pros and cons, one can say that the Three Gorges Dam is an environmentally feasible project.

Abstract: A perfect social responsibility (SR) internal control system is the basis for a company to sustain its long-term development. An integrated framework of SR internal control could be built in three divisions: one is the five key elements of internal control, the other is the major context of SR according to ISO26000: 2010 and “Internal Control Supporting Guidelines”, and another is the performing levels which can be categorized as the strategic management level and the operation activities level. A detail analysis of this integrated SR internal control framework was made and suggestions for improving the current SR performing effect were provided.

Abstract: The pulp and froth zones are the main components of froth flotation as it defines both quality of the end product and overall efficiency. The importance of the properties of the two zones, which include pulp hydrodynamics, froth bubble coalescence rate, water overflow rate, air recovery, etc., is being increasingly recognized. The properties are depending not only on the type and concentration of the frother but also on the nature and amount of the particles present in the flotation system, and as well as the frother-particle interactions and potentially of bubble-particle interactions. To date, there is no specific criterion to quantify pulp and froth properties through the interactions between frothers and particles because the various related mechanisms occurring in the pulp and froth are not fully understood. Linking the properties to the metallurgical performance is also challenged. In order to better understand the effect of these issues in flotation, in this review paper, the past and recently published articles relevant to characterizations of pulp and froth properties are widely reviewed; the findings and the gap of knowledge in this area are highlighted for further research.
Evaluation of Susceptibility to Hydrogen Embrittlement—A Rising Step Load Testing Method  [PDF]

Abstract: Hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is a dangerous reaction that puzzled the material world for a long time. Hydrogen embrittlement is a type of deterioration which can be linked to corrosion and corrosion-control processes. It involves the introduction of hydrogen into a component, an event that can seriously reduce the ductility and load-bearing capacity, cause cracking and catastrophic brittle failures at stresses below the yield stress of susceptible materials. Presently this phenomenon is not completely understood and hydrogen embrittlement detection, in particular, seems to be one of the most difficult aspects of the problem. Although the process cannot be understand completely, method such as baking can reverse the process of hydrogen embrittlement and RSL (Rising Step Load) testing presents an excellent way to test the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement in the steel and its alloys. Different specimens were made to facilitate the testing. This study determines the effect of coating process have on the brittleness of the material and use of RSL (Risisng Step Load) mechanical loading test method to qualify plating processes for the risk of internal hydrogen embrittlement. The paper introduces the different causes of the hydrogen embrittlement, especially the zinc coating process and the hot dip galvanizing process. Subsequently, hydrogen embrittlement prevention and testing are discussed, as well as the current McGill-established RSL (Rising Step Load) bend testing’s principle, potential set-up, tested specimens and some of the critical results. Finally, some of the future development of the hydrogen embrittlement prevention will be covered.
Rolling, Partial and Full Annealing of 6061 Characterization of Microstructure, Tensile Strengths and Ductility  [PDF]

Abstract: The scope of this research is to compare the grain morphology and hardness of aluminum alloy 6061 samples in three conditions: fully rolled (full hard), partially annealed (half hard), and fully annealed (soft). It is found that cold rolling produced elongated grains, parallel to the rolling direction, and the highest degree of grain-elongation is found as a band in the center of the specimens. Shearing effects of cold rolling the buckled surface produced equiaxed grains near the rolling surfaces, and may have played a role in reducing the effect of string forming solutes near the said surfaces. Higher percent reduction performed in one stage of cold rolling produced a higher increase in tensile strength and a more significant decrease in ductility. Annealing produced the softest material.

Abstract: A kind of novel multi-frequency monopole antenna with sector-nested fractal is proposed and designed, which is nested with a series of similar circular sector elements. By means of the trapeziform ground plane with the tapered CPW (coplanar waveguide) feeder in the middle, the antenna’s radiation performance is greatly improved. The antennas can synchronously operate in three frequencies, covering the working frequency bands of WLAN/WiMAX, 2.44 GHz/3.5 GHz/5.2 GHz - 5.8 GHz. The pattern and impedance measurements of antenna show a good performance over the WLAN/WiMAX band; it possesses a near omni-directional characteristic and good radiation efficiency. Moreover, the antenna is miniature and its design idea can be easily applied into other types of nested structure, the features of which make the proposed antenna have a promising application in other fields.
Regional Economic Geography with Externalities, Congestion, and Fiscal Policies in a Small-Open Growth Economy  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper develops a two-regional growth model with amenity, capital accumulation and regional public goods with public goods and fiscal policies. The economy consists of two regions and each region consists of the industrial sector and public sector. The industrial sector provides goods in perfectly competitive markets. The public sector, which is financed by the regional government’s tax incomes, supplies regional public goods. The public goods affect both firms and households. We show how to find equilibrium values of the dynamic system and simulate model. Then, we carry out comparative statics analysis with regard to parameter changes in tax rates, congestion and amenity. Our comparative statics analysis provides some important insights. For instance, a main difference between the effects of increasing the two regions’ tax rates on the output is that as the technologically advanced region’s (the other region’s) tax rate on the industrial sector is increased, the national industrial output, national capital employed by the economy, and the national wealth are increased (reduced). In the region which increases the tax rate, the wage rate, consumption and wealth per capita, output per labor force, the population, and land rent are increased, and the corresponding variables in the other region are reduced.
National and Regional Economic Growth with Fiscal Policies: Congested Public Goods and Endogenous Labor Supply of a Small-Open Economy  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to build a two-regional growth model with capital accumulation, endogenous time distribution between leisure and labor, and regional public goods with fiscal policies. We emphasize dynamic interactions among capital accumulation, externalities, supply of public good with different fiscal policies, congestion of public good, endogenous time, and economic geography. The economy consists of two regions and each region consists of the industrial sector and public sector. First, we develop the two-region growth model with public goods and fiscal policies. Second, we show how to find equilibrium values of the dynamic system. Then, we simulate model with specified parameter values. Finally, we carry out comparative statics analysis with regard to parameter changes in tax rates and congestion. Our comparative statics analysis provides some important insights.
