Abstract: Background: Investigating self-perception of oral health among the elderly may contribute towards changing public health and assistance policies in the area. Methods: The present study assessed the oral health status (tooth decay, need for treatment, periodontal status, use of and need for dental prosthesis, soft tissue alterations and self-perception of oral health) of 102 elderly people from two community groups in Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. Results: Mean age was 69.9 years and 82.4% were female. Mean DMFT was 30.17 with a predominant missing component; 63.7% were edentulous. Regarding prosthesis, 29.4% and 67.6% of elderly patients did not use upper and lower dentures respectively, while 66.7% and 78.4% required some type of upper and lower prosthesis respectively. Among valid sextants, 44.3% presented dental calculus and 34.3% presented loss of attachment from 6 to 8 mm. Soft tissue alterations were found in 58.8%. Despite of precarious clinical conditions and dental treatment needs, good oral health perception was found (49%), as well as satisfaction with the appearance of teeth and gums (60.8%). Conclusion: Subjects displayed unsatisfactory oral health conditions, accumulated over time and resulting from the lack of policies favoring this age group. There is a need for oral rehabilitation that enables the recovery of function and esthetics among the elderly, restoring their self-esteem and improving social interaction.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762004000600008
Abstract: we report the result of an examination for blood and intestinal protozoa in 12 specimens of the red squirrel sciurus spadiceus (rodentia: sciuridae) from birroque, municipality of plácido de castro, state of acre, brazil. no parasites were detected in thin, giemsa-stained blood films of the animals, but culture of the blood of three in difco b45 medium blood-agar slants gave rise to isolates of epimastigotes. inoculation of one isolate into laboratory mice resulted in the appearance of trypanosoma cruzi-like trypomastigotes in their peripheral blood, and the other two isolates gave rise to transient infections with a t. lewisi-like parasite in inoculated mice and hamsters. the failure of the latter parasite to develop in the triatomine bug rhodnius robustus suggests that it is probably not t. rangeli. this appears to be the first record of a t. lewisi-like trypanosome in neotropical squirrels. oocysts of an eimeria sp., were detected in the faeces of 10 animals (83.3%). the parasite develops in the epithelial cells of the intestine, where it may cause severe damage and sometimes results in death of the animal. no oocysts were detected in bile.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2000,
Abstract: Trypanosome infections were sought in 46 non-human primates captured principally in Amazonian Brazil. Twenty-two (47.8%) were infected with four Trypanosoma species: T. cruzi, T. minasense, T. devei and T. rangeli. These preliminary results confirmed the high prevalence and diversity of natural infections with trypanosomes in primates from Brazilian Amazon and were the first formal record of simian infections with trypanosomes in the State of Acre. The presence of T. cruzi-like and T. rangeli-like parasites are recorded in four new hosts.

Introduction: In recent years have appeared a large number of scientific evidence of the high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the general population. Objectives: To analyze the levels of vit. D in a group of health workers. Methods: Descriptive study. Were analyzed by through microparticles chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA), the analyte 25 OH vit. D and Parathormone (PTHi). For the bivariate analysis chi-square an Student's t test was applied. Significance was considered p <0.05. Subsequently, it was performed a logistic regression (L.R.) whose measure of association was the odds ratio (OR). It has built two models, one considering deficit vit. D levels below 30 ng / ml, and another to levels, below 20 ng / ml. Results: It has been observed a prevalence of hipoavitaminosis D, of 84.9% (80.8% - 89.1%). Variables sunbathing or UVA in the last month together with PTHi levels, are the variables that are associated with hypovitaminosis Interestingly, when constructing LR model will cut at 20 ng / ml, sun exposure is the only significant variable. Conclusions: There is a very high prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in the health worker population studied. PTH has an odd behavior according with vit
