Energy Band Analysis of MQW Structure Based on Kronig-Penny Model  [PDF]
Yu Zhang, Yi Wang
Journal of Modern Physics (JMP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmp.2013.47130
Abstract:

The effects of different potential well depths, well widths and barrier widths on energy band of multiple quantum well (MQW) structures are discussed in detail based on Kronig-Penny model. The results show that if the well and barrier width stay unchanged, the first and second band gaps increase linearly with the well depth. When the well depth is constant, the first and second band gaps increase exponentially with the barrier width in a wide well. However, in narrow well one, the second band gap saturates when the barrier width is wide enough. On condition that the well and barrier have equal width, the first band gap decreases exponentially with well-barrier width while the second gap still shows an exponential increase with the width. These results are insightful for the design of MQW structure optoelectronic devices.

The Relationship between Sketch and Personality: The Narcissistic Personality Inventory Research  [PDF]
Ching-Yi Wang
Art and Design Review (ADR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/adr.2015.32005
Abstract: This study investigated 73 designed beginners who drew the Venus plaster and completed the 7-dimensional Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI) test. Next, 5-point scales were used to compare the degrees of the facial similarity between the paintings and photos of the beginners who created the paintings. The results indicated that over half of the paintings were similar to the photos of the painters, and the similarity was significantly correlated with narcissism. For example, the painters with self-sufficient personalities were more likely to exhibit assertiveness, independence, self-confidence, and need for achievement; thus, they were automatically drawn to their own sense of personal feelings as projected onto the drawings, which naturally tended to look like themselves. These results might help the educators in the design field identify the likely NPI-associated psychological and behavioral outcomes of design beginners by observing the contexts of their paintings.
The Development, Technique and Application of Ready-Made in the Product Design  [PDF]
Ching-Yi Wang
Art and Design Review (ADR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/adr.2015.32008
Abstract: The purpose of this study was examined how people respond to variations in artistic ready-made products and what key features induce in the design cognition processes. In the competitive environment of consumer products, continuing to create new products is the only way to meet the consumers’ rapidly preference changing. Ready-made might be proving a chance to inspire the creative design concept for developing a new product design. In the experiment, this study first analyzes Ready-made design products to compare differences in form and content. Next, a card sorting experiment with Ready-made product designs as samples is implemented. The reactions of participants are observed using grounded theory analysis. Following the coding process, axial coding can be divided into five characters: 1) selecting components, 2) extracting function, 3) editing technique, 4) forming perception, and 5) interpreting meaning. Finally, taking the selection component as the core category, selective coding is used to address the degree of borrowing of objects and the process of construction.
Preference Measures of Rectangle Ratio on MBTI Personality Types  [PDF]
Ching-Yi Wang
Art and Design Review (ADR) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/adr.2015.33009
Abstract: Whether the golden ratio is the favorite ratio for people is a controversial research issue until now. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether oriental people in Taiwan have the preference to the western culture originated golden ratio and to find out how the personality affects ratio preference by using the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) test to classify people into different personality types. First, 120 participants classified into 16 identified personality types by the MBTI test were screened out from 195 participants recruited in this study. After that, they were asked to estimate the preference to 15 horizontal and 15 vertical rectangles with varied ratios, respectively. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1) The most popular personality types of the participants were ISTJ and ISFJ types, while ENTJ and ESTP types were much less popular; 2) The tendency of preference to varied ratios could be divided into three classes: people tended to like the ratio of a square, the preference to golden ratio was fair, and when the ratio increased to exceed the golden ratio would be gradually disliked; 3) The personality would affect the preference to golden ratio. The V6, H7 and H8 ratios were liked by people with different types of personality, I type and T type people preferred V6, people of S type and J type preferred H7 and people of F type and J type preferred H8; 4) Women with non-designer background liked golden ratio, but men disliked it. Most designers preferred golden ratio. This result could be used as guidelines for product design and market position setting.

Identification and low-complexity regime-switching insulin control of type I diabetic patients  [PDF]
Ali Hariri, Le Yi Wang
Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2011.44040
Abstract: This paper studies benefits of using simplified re-gime-switching adaptive control strategies in improving performance of insulin control for Type I diabetic patients. Typical dynamic models of glucose levels in diabetic patients are nonlinear. Using a linear time invariant controller based on an operating condition is a common method to simplify control design. On the other hand, adaptive control can potentially improve system performance, but it increases control complexity and may create further stability issues. This paper investigates patient models and presents a simplified switching control scheme using PID controllers. By comparing different switching schemes, it shows that switched PID controllers can improve performance, but frequent switching of controllers is unnecessary. These findings lead to a control strategy that utilizes only a small number of PID controllers in this scheduled adaptation strategy.
