A family of asymptotically good quantum codes based on code concatenation

Abstract: We explicitly construct an infinite family of asymptotically good concatenated quantum stabilizer codes where the outer code uses CSS-type quantum Reed-Solomon code and the inner code uses a set of special quantum codes. In the field of quantum error-correcting codes, this is the first time that a family of asymptotically good quantum codes is derived from bad codes. Its occurrence supplies a gap in quantum coding theory.
Quantum generalized Reed-Solomon codes: Unified framework for quantum MDS codes

Abstract: We construct a new family of quantum MDS codes from classical generalized Reed-Solomon codes and derive the necessary and sufficient condition under which these quantum codes exist. We also give code bounds and show how to construct them analytically. We find that existing quantum MDS codes can be unified under these codes in the sense that when a quantum MDS code exists, then a quantum code of this type with the same parameters also exists. Thus as far as is known at present, they are the most important family of quantum MDS codes.
The Teacher Development in Physical Education: A Review of the Literature

Abstract: The purpose of this article was to provide a review of the research on the professional development of physical education (PE) teachers. The structured approach (Erich, Hansford and Tennent, 2004) was used for the search and analysis of literature. First, searching through computerized education databases, a total of 56 research-based articles were included in this review. Second, demographic data were summarized and analyzed according to the geographic distribution, study periods, research method, research design, and participants. Third, a review and analysis of the findings from these studies were presented according to three themes: impact of PE teacher development, types of PE teacher development, and influencing factors. The article concluded with a discussion of key issues in three themes and the recommendation for the future research.
MJO Simulations by GAMIL1.0 and GAMIL2.0

Abstract: GAMIL2.0 is the newly released version of the Grid-point Atmospheric Model of IAP LASG (GAMIL), in which the major modifications from GAMIL1.0 include an updated deep convection scheme and the incorporation of a two-moment bulk stratiform cloud microphysics scheme. This study evaluates the performances of both versions on Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) simulations. The results show that GAMIL2.0 obtains an enhanced MJO eastward and northward propagation, which is weak in GAMIL1.0, and it reproduces a more reasonable MJO major structure coupling upper level wind, lower level wind, and outgoing long wave radiation. The contributions of each scheme and factor to the improvement of GAMIL2.0 simulations need further study.

Abstract: CAPT (Climate Change Prediction Program and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (CCPP-ARM) Parameterization Testbed) has been a valuable tool to assess climate models in recent years, and the Tropical Warm Pool-International Cloud Experiment (TWP-ICE) has collected comprehensive measurements to verify its physical parameterizations. The present study evaluates the performances of the two GAMIL (grid-point atmospheric model of IAP LASG) versions during TWP-ICE using CAPT. The results indicate that GAMIL2.0 reproduced better shifts of clouds and rainfall during three distinct monsoon phases than GAMIL1.0, although both of them simulated the large-scale dynamical states well, which are mainly attributable to the different convective ameterizations.
Low-Level Jets over Southeast China: The Warm Season Climatology of the Summer of 2003

Abstract: The southwesterly low-level jet (LLJ) over southeast China in the summer of 2003 is analyzed in this study. The analysis is based on the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Final (FNL) operational global analysis data on 1.0×1.0-degree grids at 6-h intervals. The major criteria for choosing the LLJ included the following: a maximum wind speed equal to or greater than 12.0 m s -1 , a wind direction of between 180° and 270°, and the height of wind maximum at 900-700 hPa, not confined to single pressure level. The results show that the LLJs over southeast China dominate at 850 and 800 hPa. These LLJs are closely associated with the topography of this area and tend to locate regions with large terrain gradients, including the northeastern and eastern Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Under the influence of mid-latitude westerly winds, the LLJs above 750 hPa move northward to the Yangtze-Huai River Basin. Compared to the ten-year (2000-2009) mean climate conditions, the LLJs in the warm season of summer 2003 were exceptionally active and strong, as reflected by the positive anomalies of LLJ occurrence numbers and wind speed. In addition, the 2003 LLJs showed strong diurnal variation, especially at pressure levels below 800 hPa. The majority of the LLJs appeared between midnight and the early morning hours (before 8 a.m.). Finally, the summary of LLJ grid numbers indicates that more than 80% of LLJs in June and July 2003 occurred within the 33-d rainy period. Thus, these LLJs are directly related to the anomalously heavy rainfall in the Yangtze-Huai River Basin.
ENSO Hindcast Experiments Using a Coupled GCM

Abstract: A group of seasonal hindcast experiments are conducted using a coupled model known as the Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System Model-gamil1.11 (FGOALS-g1.11) developed at the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG). Two steps are included in our El Ni o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) hindcast experiments. The first step is to integrate the coupled GCM with the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) strongly nudged towards the observation from 1971 to 2006. The second step is to remove the SST nudging term. We carried out a one-year hindcast by adopting the initial values from SST nudging experiments from the first step on January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st from 1982 to 2005. In the SST nudging experiment, the model can reproduce the observed equatorial thermocline anomalies and zonal wind stress anomalies in the Pacific, which demonstrates that the SST nudging approach can provide realistic atmospheric and oceanic initial conditions for seasonal prediction experiments. The model also demonstrates a high Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC) score for SST in most of the tropical Pacific, Atlantic Ocean, and some Indian Ocean regions with a 3-month lead. Compared with the persistence ACC score, this model shows much higher ACC scores for the Nino3.4 index for a 9-month lead.

A survey in rural China of parent-absence through migrant working: the impact on their children's self-concept and loneliness

Abstract: Participants were 230 "absent migrant parents" children and 250 comparison children in the rural area of a county, China. The self-concept and loneliness of children were assessed using Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and Childhood Loneliness Scale.The "absent migrant parents" children were more likely to dislike their parents or be uncertain whether they like their parents, and they reported less time spent in physical and leisure time activities, higher loneliness and lower self-concept in comparison with the comparison children. Loneliness was significantly negatively correlated with all the dimensions of self-concept among the two groups. Regression analysis showed that self-concept was positively related to the relationship with parents and guardians and time spent in physical and leisure activities among the "absent migrant parents" children. The same factors (except the relationship with guardians) were found for self-concept among the comparison children.The "absent migrant parents" children were more inclined to have lower self-concept and higher loneliness. The lower self-concept seemed to contribute to the higher loneliness of the "absent migrant parents" children. The lower self-concept of the "absent migrant parents" children was mainly related with their relationship with parents and guardians. The acceptance and support from their parents could not be fully replaced by that from their guardians.Following the rapid increase of migrant workers in China [1-3], the number of "absent migrant parents" children who grow up outside the parental environment or with limited parental involvement because their parents are working far away from home is also rising fast. Abstract: AIM: To identify differentially expressed genes in quiescent and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and explore their functions. METHODS: HSCs were isolated from the normal Sprague Dawley rats by in suit perfusion of collagenase and pronase and density Nycodenz gradient centrifugation. Total RNA and mRNA of quiescent HSCs, and culture-activated HSCs were extracted, quantified and reversely transcripted into cDNA. The global gene expression profile was analyzed by microarray with Affymetrix rat genechip. Differentially expressed genes were annotated with Gene Ontology (GO) and analyzed with Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) pathway using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery. Microarray data were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The function of Wnt5a on human HSCs line LX-2 was assessed with lentivirus-mediated Wnt5a RNAi. The expression of Wnt5a in fibrotic liver of a carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced fibrosis rat model was also analyzed with Western blotting. RESULTS: Of the 28 700 genes represented on this chip, 2566 genes displayed at least a 2-fold increase or decrease in expression at a P < 0.01 level with a false discovery rate. Of these, 1396 genes were upregulated, while 1170 genes were downregulated in culture-activated HSCs. These differentially expressed transcripts were grouped into 545 GO based on biological process GO terms. The most enriched GO terms included response to wounding, wound healing, regulation of cell growth, vasculature development and actin cytoskeleton organization. KEGG pathway analysis revealed that Wnt5a signaling pathway participated in the activation of HSCs. Wnt5a was significantly increased in culture-activated HSCs as compared with quiescent HSCs. qRT-PCR validated the microarray data. Lentivirus-mediated suppression of Wnt5a expression in activated LX-2 resulted in significantly impaired proliferation, downregulated expressions of type I collagen and transforming growth factor-β1. Wnt5a was upregulated in the fibrotic liver of a CCl4-induced fibrosis rat model. CONCLUSION: Wnt5a is involved in the activation of HSCs, and it may serve as a novel therapeutic target in the treatment of liver fibrosis.
