Preparation of Four DSAs and Comparison of Their Electro-catalytic Activity

Abstract: Four different dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs) Ti/SnO2+Sb2O3, Ti/PbO2, Ti/Fe-PbO2 and Ti/SnO2+Sb2O3/Fe-PbO2 were prepared. Their surface morphology was characterized by SEM and polarization curves were investigated in H2SO4 solution. In order to explore their electro-catalytic activity, electro-catalytic degradation experiment was carried out with phenol as model organic compound. The research results indicated that Ti/SnO2+Sb2O3/Fe-PbO2 anode had the highest catalytic activity among the four anodes. The phenol removal rate reaches 95%. The accelerated lifetime of the electrodes with interlayer was improved obviously, reaching 16 h. In addition, the electro-catalytic degradation reaction of phenol on the four anodes followed first-order reaction kinetic law.

Abstract: The homogeneous bismuth titanate single-phase nanoscaled ceramic powders have been prepared by means of metalorganic decomposition. The thermal decomposition/oxidation of the preheated precursor, as investigated by differential thermalgravimetric analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and environment scanning electron microscope, lead to the formation of a well-defined orthorhombic bismuth titanate compound. Formation of the layered perovskite-like bismuth titanate occurs via intermediates with sequential changes in the coordination polyhedron of bismuth. The chemical reactions of precursor powder in heat treatment process have been investigated further by Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra, and the reaction mechanism was tentatively proposed thereafter.

Abstract: Introduction: The primary treatment aim for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is to relieve overall symptoms which can significantly impair the patient’s quality of life (QOL); however, it generally requires a high pill burden that may be improved by administration of combinatorial formulations. Thus, the effectiveness of alverine citrate and simeticone combination (ACS) for global symptom relief for IBS was investigated in this non-interventional study. Patients and Methods: ROME III IBS patients (n = 640; 52.3% male: mean age: 43.6 ± 12.5 years) with abdominal pain and discomfort ≥60 of 0-100 visual analogue scale (VAS) were included in a prospective, multicenter, non-interventional study at 26 Chinese sites from December 2010 to January 2012. Patients received alverine citrate (60 mg) with simeticone (300 mg) (ACS) 3× daily for 4 weeks. Pain/discomfort and bloating/distension were assessed by VAS. Global symptoms and QOL were assessed by 7-point and 5-point Likert scales, respectively. Post-treatment bowel function was assessed by Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) and treatment-related adverse events (AEs) were recorded. Results: Of 640 patients, 540 (84.4%) completed the study, and 100 (15.6%) withdrew. In total, 87.5% reported bloating at baseline. After 4-week ACS treatment, 89.1% reported global symptom improvement. Furthermore, 4-week ACS treatment reduced pain and bloated VAS scores significantly from 78.4 ± 9.9 to 32.1 ± 21.0 and from 63.2 ± 27.2 to 22.6 ± 20.9, respectively (both p < 0.001), decreased diarrhea or constipation occurrence from 67.2% to 10.2% (p < 0.001), and reduced IBS impact on QOL with only 2 treatment-related AEs. Conclusion: Routine clinical administration of ACS for IBS over a 4-week period provides effective relief of IBS symptoms and improves QOL in IBS patients.

Abstract: Considering the high similarity among sensor data sequences in wireless sensor networks(WSNs), we propose an efficient data transmitting model—EDTM, which optimizes the data collection scheme utilizing the correlation among sensor nodes. The aim of EDTM is to extend the lifetime of the sensor networks as much as possible, meanwhile guaranteeing the accuracy of data provided to the user which is measured by two parameters, error bounds and confidence.

Abstract: For the last almost three decades, since the famous Buchberger-M\"oller(BM) algorithm emerged, there has been wide interest in vanishing ideals of points and associated interpolation polynomials. Our paradigm is based on the theory of bivariate polynomial interpolation on cartesian point sets that gives us related degree reducing interpolation monomial and Newton bases directly. Since the bases are involved in the computation process as well as contained in the final output of BM algorithm, our paradigm obviously simplifies the computation and accelerates the BM process. The experiments show that the paradigm is best suited for the computation over finite prime fields that have many applications.

Abstract: Emergy analysis is effective for analyzing ecological economic systems. However, the accuracy of the approach is affected by the diversity of economic level, meteorological and hydrological parameters in different regions. The present study evaluated the economic benefits, environmental impact, and sustainability of indoor, semi-intensive and extensive farming systems of sea cucumber(Apostichopus japonicus) in the same region. The results showed that A. japonicus indoor farming system was high in input and output(yield) whereas pond extensive farming system was low in input and output. The output/input ratio of indoor farming system was lower than that of pond extensive farming system, and the output/input ratio of semi-intensive farming system fell in between them. The environmental loading ratio of A. japonicus extensive farming system was lower than that of indoor farming system. In addition, the emergy yield and emergy exchange ratios, and emergy sustainability and emergy indexes for sustainable development were higher in extensive farming system than those in indoor farming system. These results indicated that the current extensive farming system exerted fewer negative influences on the environment, made more efficient use of available resources, and met more sustainable development requirements than the indoor farming system. A. japonicus farming systems showed more emergy benefits than fish farming systems. The pond farming systems of A. japonicus exploited more free local environmental resources for production, caused less potential pressure on the local environment, and achieved higher sustainability than indoor farming system
Evaluation of the Potential Effect of Transgenic Rice Expressing Cry1Ab on the Hematology and Enzyme Activity in Organs of Female Swiss Rats

Abstract: To assess the safety of transgenic rice expressing Cry1Ab protein to vertebrates, the effect of Cry1Ab rice on broad health indicators in blood and various organs of Swiss rats were analyzed. The 30 and 90 day safety studies of Cry1Ab rice on female Swiss rats revealed that Cry1Ab rice had no significant effect on the several elements of blood lymph including hemogram, calcium ion concentration and apoptosis rate of lymphocytes, indicating that Cry1Ab protein could not affect the blood lymph of Swiss rat. Similarly, Cry1Ab rice had no effect on enzyme activities in a variety of organs of Swiss rat. However, Cry1Ab rice did have significant effects on the blood biochemistry indexes including urea, triglyceride (TG), glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) after the rats were fed with Cry1Ab rice for 30 days, but not after 90 days, indicating that Cry1Ab protein may influence blood metabolism for a short duration. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis of the 6 genes encoding enzymes responsible for the major detoxification functions of liver revealed that Cry1Ab rice exerted no influences on the levels of these transcripts in liver of Swiss rat, indicating that significant differences registered in part of the blood biochemical parameters in the 30 day study might result from other untested organs or tissues in response to the stress of exogenous Cry1Ab protein. The results suggest that Cry1Ab protein has no significant long-term (90 day) effects on female Swiss rat.
Pulse gas alignment and AFM manipulation of single-wall carbon nanotube

Abstract: In the fabrication process of nanoelectronic device arrays based on single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT), oriented alignment of SWCNTs and property modification of metallic SWCNTs in the array are the key problems to be solved. Pulse gas alignment with substrate downward tilt is proposed to realize the controllable alignment of SWCNTs. Experimental results demonstrate that 84% SWCNTs are aligned in 15° 15° angular to the pulse gas direction. A modified nanomanipulation technology based on atomic force microscope (AFM) is utilized to perform various kinds of SWCNT manipulation, such as SWCNT separation from the “Y” CNT, catalyst removal from the SWCNT end, continual nano buckles fabrication on SWCNT and even stretching to break, which provides a feasible way to modify the size, shape and the electrical property of SWCNTs.
