Usability Experiments to Evaluate UML/SysML-Based Model Driven Software Engineering Notations for Logic Control in Manufacturing Automation  [PDF]
Birgit Vogel-Heuser
Journal of Software Engineering and Applications (JSEA) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jsea.2014.711084
Abstract: Many industrial companies and researchers are looking for more efficient model driven engineering approaches (MDE) in software engineering of manufacturing automation systems (MS) especially for logic control programming, but are uncertain about the applicability and effort needed to implement those approaches in comparison to classical Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programming with IEC 61131-3. The paper summarizes results of usability experiments evaluating UML and SysML as software engineering notations for a MDE applied in the domain of manufacturing systems. Modeling MS needs to cover the domain specific characteristics, i.e. hybrid process, real time requirements and communication requirements. In addition the paper presents factors, constraint and practical experience for the development of further usability experiments. The paper gives examples of notational expressiveness and weaknesses of UML and SysML. The appendix delivers detailed master models, representing the correct best suited model, and evaluation schemes of the experiment, which is helpful if setting up own empirical experiments.
Analysis of Post-Burial Soil Developments of Pre-AD 79 Roman Paleosols near Pompeii (Italy)  [PDF]

Open Journal of Soil Science (OJSS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojss.2014.410035
Abstract: The AD 79 eruption of Somma-Vesuvius completely buried the ancient landscape around Pompeii (Italy) to some extent conserving the pre-AD 79 Roman paleosols of the Sarno River plain. To estimate potential post-burial soil developments of these paleosols detailed soil liquid and solid phase analysis were carried out. Firstly, an in-situ soil hydrological monitoring was conducted within a pre-AD 79 paleosol in natural undisturbed stratification. The results show that soil water flow and nutrient transport from the overlying volcanic deposits into the pre-AD 79 paleosol take place. Secondly, to estimate their influence on the paleosol’s mineral soil properties, the solid phase of four pre-AD 79 paleosols and associated modern unburied soils were analysed and compared. By combining the data from the soil liquid and solid phase analysis, potential post-burial changes in the paleosols were estimated. Finally, a rise of the mean groundwater table was determined since AD 79. This distinguishes the Sarno River plain into two different zones of post-burial soil developments: 1) lower altitudes where formerly terrestrial paleosols are now influenced by groundwater dynamics and 2) higher altitudes where the paleosols are still part of the vadose zone and rather influenced by infiltration water or interflow. Thus, the mechanism of potential post-burial soil development being active in the pre-AD 79 paleosols is not uniform for the entire Sarno River plain but strongly depends on the paleotopographic situation.

Abstract: ate on raloxifene: role in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women Review (2463) Total Article Views Authors: Vogel VG Published Date October 2011 Volume 2011:3 Pages 127 - 137 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/BCTT.S11288 Victor G Vogel Cancer Institute, Geisinger Health System, Danville, PA, USA Abstract: Risk factors allow us to define women who are at increased lifetime risk for breast cancer, and the most important factor is age. Benign breast disease increases risk, and the most important histologies are atypical lobular or ductal hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ. Family history of breast cancer among first-degree relatives (mother, sisters, daughters) also increases risk. Quantitative measures of risk give accurate predictions of breast cancer incidence for groups of women but not for individual subjects. Multiple published, randomized controlled trials, which employed selective estrogen receptor (ER) modulators (SERMs), have demonstrated consistent reductions of 35% or greater in the risk of ER-positive invasive and noninvasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Professional organizations in the US now recommend the use of SERMs to reduce the risk of breast cancer in high-risk, postmenopausal women. Raloxifene and tamoxifen reduce the risk of ER-positive invasive breast cancer with equal efficacy, but raloxifene is associated with a lower risk of thromboembolic disease, benign uterine conditions, and cataracts than tamoxifen in postmenopausal women. No evidence exists establishing whether a reduction in breast cancer risk from either agent translates into reduced breast cancer mortality. Overall quality of life is similar with raloxifene or tamoxifen, but the incidence of dyspareunia, weight gain, and musculoskeletal complaints is higher with raloxifene use, whereas vasomotor symptoms, bladder incontinence, gynecologic symptoms, and leg cramps were higher with tamoxifen use.
Conversion of electron spectrum associated with fission into the antineutrino spectrum
Vogel, Petr
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevC.76.025504
Abstract: The accuracy of the procedure that converts the experimentally determined electron spectrum associated with fission of the nuclear fuels ^{235}U, ^{239}Pu, ^{241}Pu, and ^{238}U into the $\bar{\nu}_e$ spectrum is examined. By using calculated sets of mutually consistent spectra it is shown that the conversion procedure can result in a small $\sim$1% error provided several conditions are met. Chief among them are the requirements that the average nuclear charge as a function of the $\beta$ decay endpoint energy is independently known and that the $\bar{\nu}_e$ spectrum is binned into bins that are several times larger than the width of the slices used to fit the electron spectrum.
Nuclear physics aspects of double beta decay
Vogel, Petr
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2008,
Abstract: Comprehensive description of the phenomenology of the $\beta\beta$ decay is given, with emphasis on the nuclear physics aspects. After a brief review of the neutrino oscillation results and of motivation to test the lepton number conservation, the mechanism of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ is discussed. Its relation to the lepton flavor violation involving charged leptons and its use as a diagnostic tool of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mechanism is described. Next the basic nuclear physics of both $\beta\beta$-decay modes is presented, and the decay rate formulae derived. The nuclear physics methods used, the nuclear shell model and the quasiparticle random phase approximation, are described next, and the choice of input parameters is discussed in the following section. Finally, the numerical values of the nuclear matrix elements, and their uncertainty, are presented. In the appendix the relation of the search for the neutrino magnetic moment to the Dirac versus Majorana nature of neutrinos is described.
Neutrino Mass and Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay
Vogel, Petr
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2008,
Abstract: The motivation for the search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay is briefly reviewed. It is stressed that the exchange of light Majorana neutrinos is not the only possible mechanism of the decay. The link between lepton number and lepton flavor violation is described and its role in elucidating the $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay mechanism is discussed. The main topic of the talk is the evaluation of the nuclear matrix elements and their uncertainty. Various physics effects that influence the value of the matrix elements are described and the results of the two main methods, the quasiparticle random phase approximation and the nuclear shell model, are compared.

Parcelling out the watershed: The recurring consequences of organising Columbia river management within a basin-based territory
Eve Vogel
Water Alternatives , 2012,
Abstract: This article examines a 75-year history of North America’s Columbia river to answer the question: what difference does a river basin territory actually make? Advocates reason that river basins and watersheds are natural and holistic water management spaces, and can avoid the fragmentations and conflicts endemic to water management within traditional political territories. However, on the Columbia, this reasoning has not played out in practice. Instead, basin management has been shaped by challenges from and negotiations with more traditional jurisdictional spaces and political districts. The recurring result has been 'parcelling out the watershed': coordinating river management to produce a few spreadable benefits, and distributing these benefits, as well as other responsibilities and policy-making influence, to jurisdictional parts and political districts. To provide generous spreadable benefits, river management has unevenly emphasised hydropower, resulting in considerable environmental losses. However, benefits have been widely spread and shared – and over time challengers have forced management to diversify. Thus a river basin territory over time produced patterns of both positive and negative environmental, social, economic, and democratic outcomes. To improve the outcomes of watershed-based water management, we need more interactive and longer-term models attentive to dynamic politics and geographies.
