Scientific Interest of Social Behaviour in Animal Models of Human Diseases  [PDF]
Virginia Torres-Lista, Lydia Giménez-Llort
Neuroscience & Medicine (NM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/nm.2013.41008
Abstract: The overview shows that the scientific interest in social behaviour in mice has exponentially grown in the last two decades in parallel with advances in biotechnology and the emergence of genetically engineered mice. Most of the studies are psychopharmacological or look for the neurochemical bases of social behaviour and its alterations. However, the rol of social behaviour per se is increasing mainly in those research works aimed to model neuropsychiatric and neurode-generative diseases. In fact, at the translational level, the study of social behaviour in murine models is relevant because changes in social behaviour are present in most neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders as well as in other diseases that, directly or indirectly, affect the sphere of social relationships. The consideration of social behaviour in the experimental design of basic and translational research works using murine models may improve the predictive validity of new preventive and/or therapeutic strategies. The present work provides conceptual description of social behaviour in mice, the tests used to measure it and analyzes its increasing interest, mostly in the area of neuroscience. It reviews the 821 scientific studies (in English) included in the MEDLINE database from 1930 to December 2012. Keywords used for the search where those related to the different kinds of social behaviour (spontaneous or induced) in mice and took into account the diversity of experimental paradigms (dyads, groups, parental relationships, isolation) and the wide spectrum of behavioural tests available.

Ruiz Bolívar,Carlos; Torres Pacheco,Virginia;
Investigación y Postgrado , 2005,
Abstract: the purpose of this work was to study how professors teach research methods in the university. a survey on a sample of 18 faculty that teach research methods in 10 different majors, in a venezuelan public university, with 69 structured open and mixed questions survey, was used. an instructional modernity index (imi) was constructed, based on the "teaching-learning process dimension" of the instrument that included 30 items. this allowed the evaluation of methodological tendencies used by the professors in the teaching of research methods. the results indicate that: (a) none of the teachers reach the criteria to be classified in the category of "instructional modernity"; (b) differences were found when the imi of the professors of similar majors were compared; (c) the variables: academic category, years of experience, and training on research seem to be associated with the imi; (d) the characteristics of students that applied to a program are, in most of the cases, below the university standards; and (e) such characteristics do not appear associated, in the present study, with the results of the academic achievement of the students.

Revista de Saúde Pública , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102009005000001
Abstract: objective: to compare the effectiveness of individual and group strategies in a diabetes education program. methods: a total of 104 type-2 diabetes outpatients enrolled in an education program of a teaching hospital in belo horizonte, southeastern brazil, were randomly selected and assigned to two different education strategies: group education (54 subjects) and individual education (50 subjects). group education comprised three monthly sessions, which involved play and interactive dynamics. in parallel, a second group received individual education. subjects were follow up for six months during 2006 and they were evaluated using specific questionnaires: knowledge of diabetes, psychological attitudes, change in behavior, quality of life. clinical evaluation was performed at baseline, three and six months of intervention. results: mean age was 60.6 years. the results of group and individual education were similar in the assessment tests of attitude, change of behavior and quality of life. a reduction in hba1c levels was seen in both groups, but a statistically significant difference (p=0.012) was found only in the group education. conclusions: both strategies of diabetes education were effective, however, group education was more effective than individual education for blood glucose control.
Discursive media strategies in the journalistic construction of schistosomiasis in Jaboticatubas, Minas Gerais
Modena, Celina Maria;Massara, Cristiano Lara;Schall, Virginia Torres;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762006000900015
Abstract: using media discourse analysis for material published by the press on schistomisasis in the city of jaboticatubas, the possible determining factors of narrative and discursive constructions in the diffusion of information are discussed. it was observed that media discourse treats schistosomiasis in 1962 as something from the natural order. by 1997 and 1998, the media discourse strategies reveal ideological treatment in favor of certain social segments. situations are identified in which social agents in specific contexts construct the meanings of this endemic disease. it was concluded that the economic organization of space was a determining factor in the production and circulation of the media discourses.

Abstract: An initial analysis of printed educational materials used by the Municipal Health Office (MHO) of Belo Horizonte (BH) on themes linked to sexual and reproductive health was carried out. Premises were that health education is a practice developed at the social relations level and that mass media and daily interaction can be a link between the population and the health services. Printed material was collected from a Basic Health Unit (BHU) of the MHO/BH and its content was classified, described and analyzed. To study the meanings that teenagers attributed to the body’s sexual and reproductive dimensions, using one of the materials, a focal group was formed. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with health professionals.It should be emphasized that the materials are produced in a vertical manner, treating the target audience as an airtight and homogenous block, with the STD/AIDS thematic prevailing. Some of the materials focusing on aids display good quality, presenting an objective and clear language and pertinent illustrations. However, in the majority, the prevailing approach is that of the biomedical body in detriment to a broader approach to sexuality. Assessments and reception studies are needed so that the production of educational material can be linked to the target audience’s existential context and that quality criteria for these materials are included in health professionals’ training.
