Compositional analysis of protein sequences of different species

Abstract: We describe several protein sequence statistics designed to evaluate distinctive attributes ofresidue content and arrangement in primary structure. As per the global consideration, thecompositional biases of clustering different residue types (charged residues, hydrophobic residues) oflong runs of charged or uncharged residues, periodic patterns, counts and distribution ofhomooligopeptides, and unusual spacing between particular residue types. The computer programSEQUANA (statistical analysis of protein sequences) calculates all the statistics for any individualprotein sequence input and is available for the WINDOWS environment through electronic mail onrequest to csvinobha@gmail.com
Sand Slurry Erosive Wear Behavior of Hot Extruded Al6061-SiC Composites  [PDF]

Abstract: Aluminum based composites are very popular in automotive and aerospace segments. In particular aluminum alloy-SiC composite systems are widely studied and seriously explored for various other applications in defense and space. However they have not been looked at as potential materials in naval and chemical applications where synergistic effects of both wear and corrosion need to be addressed to. This needs the assessment of wear behavior of composites. From the survey, it is evident that major focus is on mechanical and corrosion properties of cast composites. However, meager information is available as regards the slurry erosive wear behavior of cast and extruded metal matrix composites. In the light of the above, the present investigation is aimed at studying in detail the slurry erosive wear behavior of cast and hot extruded Al6061 and Al6061-SiC composites in sand slurry. Al6061-SiC composites have been prepared primarily by vortex method. Hot extrusion of these composites and the matrix alloy has been carried out at 550℃ using a 500T hydraulic press. Both as cast and hot extruded composites have been subjected to microstructure studies, microhardness, and slurry erosive wear tests. The hot extruded composites exhibit higher hardness, and slurry erosive wear resistance when compared with as cast alloy and its composites.

Abstract: In this paper I offer a review and a reflection on Gender Identities and Education: The Impact of Starting School (Lloyd and Duveen, 1992) as a means of examining the detail and insights of Gerard Duveen’s contribution to the study of identity. What this study highlights is the contextual, imposed, inter-subjective and collaborative nature of identity, the relationship between re-presentation, culture and identity, and the dynamic, resistant and transformative character of identity production. I give detailed empirical examples of the genesis of representations of gender and gendered identities through a discussion of the interconnections between microgenesis, ontogenesis and sociogenesis. This leads onto a consideration of representations ‘that other’ more generally and the importance of including the social and material within the methodology of identity projects. As such, I argue, we can see the work of Duveen and his colleagues as valuable for a theory and a method of research of resistant identities in modern cultures, and thereby develop a social psychology properly equipped to research current social relations, and properly engaged with contemporary experiences of identity.

Abstract: The application of Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) have been crucial in enhancing the operating flexibility and resiliency of refineries. In particular, the Process Systems Engineering (PSE) community has been instrumental in carrying out a key role in extending the systems engineering boundaries from mere chemical process systems to the incorporation of business process systems with consideration for risk. Thus, this study considers a robust framework for the economic and operational risk management of a refinery under uncertainty by extending an existing two-stage stochastic program with fixed recourse via scenario analysis. The problem is mathematically formulated as a two-stage stochastic nonlinear program with a tractable meanbrisk structure in the objective function. Two measures of risk are considered, namely the metrics of Mean-Absolute Deviation (MAD) and Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR). The scenario analysis approach is adopted to represent uncertainties in three types of stochastic parameters, namely prices of crude oil and commercial products, market demands and production yields. However, a large number of scenarios are required to capture the stochasticity of the problem. Therefore, to circumvent the problem of the resulting large-scale model, we implement a Monte Carlo simulation approach based on the Sample Average Approximation (SAA) technique to generate the scenarios. A statistical-based scenario reduction strategy is applied to determine the minimum number of scenarios required yet still able to compute the true optimal solution for a desired level of accuracy within the specified confidence intervals. The proposed model is illustrated through a representative numerical example, with computational results demonstrating how risk-averse-and risk-inclined solutions in the face of uncertainty can be attained in a risk-conscious model.
Dynamic material strength measurement utilizing magnetically applied pressure-shear

Abstract: Magnetically applied pressure-shear (MAPS) is a recently developed technique used to measure dynamic material strength developed at Sandia National Laboratories utilizing magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) drive pulsed power systems. MHD drive platforms generate high pressures by passing a large current through a pair of parallel plate conductors which, in essence, form a single turn magnet coil. Lorentz forces resulting from the interaction of the self-generated magnetic field and the drive current repel the plates and result in a high pressure ramp wave propagating in the conductors. This is the principle by which the Sandia Z Machine operates for dynamic material testing. MAPS relies on the addition of a second, external magnetic field applied orthogonally to both the drive current and the self-generated magnetic field. The interaction of the drive current and this external field results in a shear wave being induced directly in the conductors. Thus both longitudinal and shear stresses are generated. These stresses are coupled to a sample material of interest where shear strength is probed by determining the maximum transmissible shear stress in the state defined by the longitudinal compression. Both longitudinal and transverse velocities are measured via a specialized velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR). Pressure and shear strength of the sample are calculated directly from the VISAR data. Results of tests on several materials at modest pressures (~10GPa) will be presented and discussed.

Abstract: The informatisation of our image of the human being Serious reflection is required to determine our position regarding our image of the human being. The image we maintain is of critical importance. It determines interhuman relations and human action. The traditional notion of the human subject as absolute, self-certain and autonomous has been comprehensively questioned for some decades and can be considered outdated. This rethinking has a long history and a diversity of insights has been developed by many influential thinkers. Processes of informatisation play a significant role in the development of these different perspectives. Three developments seem prominent. The first is the development of the notion of the so-called “decentred subject”. The second development puts more emphasis on the mechanical – more specifically the mechanisation of the mind, with the consequent renunciation of human spirituality. This perspective is a predecessor of the third development which entails a further degeneration of human subjectivity. Non-corporeal consciousness can now be downloaded onto computers. The figure of the posthuman emerges. Problems of fallibility, mortality and ageing will disappear. Although such an apocalyptic viewpoint may indeed sound tempting, it leaves many crucial questions unanswered. On the other hand, when dealt with differently, this process of rethinking brings forward some rich and new articulations of what it means to be human, which can be of great significance for individuality and sociality in the light of the crises that threaten to fatally derail contemporary societies worldwide. It is, moreover, not totally unrelated to the other three ways and receives its inspiration from them.
