Abstract: acute suppurative thyroiditis (ast) is an uncommon condition because thyroid gland is remarkably resistant to infections. in children, anatomic defects such as a left pyriform sinus fistula or a thyroglossal duct remnant predispose to this infection. once the diagnosis is confirmed by ultrasound or computed tomography, antimicrobial therapy based on the culture and gram staining must be started. after two or three weeks of treatment, predisposing anatomic defects must be sought cautiously. we report a 13 years old girl presenting with cervical pain and fever. a cervical ultrasound showed an enlarged thyroid lobule with hypoecogenic zones that suggested a supurative collection. cefotaxime and cloxacillin were started. a needle aspiration of the collection obtained a purulent material. the culture of this material yielded a streptococcus pneumoniae. the clinical condition of the patient improved and she was discharged in good conditions. two months later a contrast esophagus x ray did not show predisposing anatomic defects. Revista médica de Chile , 2003,
Abstract: The age at which children born preterm normalize their bone mineral density, is not well known. Aim: To study if children born preterm have normalized their bone mineral density at age 5 to 7 years. Patients and methods: Twenty six infants born preterm (14 male), were studied at age 5 to 7 years. Birth weight, present weight and height, bone age, calcium and phosphate intake at the first year of life and at the current age were assessed. Bone mineral density was measured by single photon X ray absorptiometry in the dominant forearm. A blood sample was obtained to measure insulin growth factor 1 (IGF-1). As a control group, 105 healthy age-paired infants born at term, were studied. Results: Bone mineral density was significantly lower in infants born preterm than in their term counterparts (0.273±0.01 g/cm2 and 0.302±0.01 g/cm2 respectively, p <0.001). There was a positive correlation between bone mineral density and IGF-1 (r=0.49, p=0.01). No correlation with the other measured parameters was observed. Conclusions: Infants that were born preterm have a lower bone mineral density at 5 to 7 years of age than their term controls. Bone mineral density correlates with IGF-1 (Rev Méd Chile 2003; 131: 1289-94).

Abstract: laparoscopy surgery started in the 90′s decade and it is rapidly developing in the first years of this century; it is therefore a very recent surgical alternative. this has made that each teams formation has gone along very different ways, today that we have already expert services it is essential to systematize the training and to shorten the learning curve. for that purpose we have the practical training courses that combine surgery in patients with surgery in experimental operating theatres, which are absolutely indispensable.
Spectrophotometric Determination of the pKa, Isosbestic Point and Equation of Absorbance vs. pH for a Universal pH Indicator  [PDF]
L. E. Vidal Salgado, C. Vargas-Hernández
American Journal of Analytical Chemistry (AJAC) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajac.2014.517135
Abstract: The pKa and the isosbestic point of the universal pH indicator Carlo Ebra 1-11 (catalog number 45712) were determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Aqueous buffer solutions with pHs ranging from 3.83 to 10.85 were mixed. Four methods—two graphical and two mathematical— were used to estimate the acid dissociation constant (pKa) and isosbestic point using absorbance measurements. The equation for the dependence of the absorbance on pH at λ = 600 nm was obtained using calibration curves. The resulting average pKa of the four methods was 8.277 with a standard deviation of 0.1728. The results obtained using the mathematical methods were very similar, with a deviation of 0.0014; the average pKa determined using these methods was 8.263 ± 0.001. The literature contains no previous reports of the pKa of this indicator. The isosbestic point occurs at a wavelength of 494 nm, with an absorbance of 0.46.
Use of Graphene and Cucurbit[7]uril Electrodes for the Determination of Amantadine in Biological Fluids  [PDF]
C. S. H. Domínguez, P. Hernández
American Journal of Analytical Chemistry (AJAC) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ajac.2015.67060
Abstract: A differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method for amantadine (AT) determination is developed. To this end, all the chemical and instrumental variables affecting the determination of amantadine are optimized. These studies have used three types of glassy-carbon electrode, first electrode which has not undergone surface modification or coating, to then modify the working electrode surface with two kinds of suspensions: graphene and graphene-cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). From studies of the mechanisms governing the electrochemical response of amantadine, it was concluded that it is an electrochemically system with a diffusive reduction phenomenon. Under optimal conditions and with the appropriate electrode modification, we proceed to study the relation between the peak intensity with the analyte concentration. Thus, we find that when the electrode surface is covered with graphene-CB[7], two linear sections are obtained, the first one in the concentration range of between 0.05 μg·mL﹣1 and 0.75 μg·mL﹣1 ; and the second one between 1.00 μg·mL﹣1 and 6.00 μg·mL﹣1, with Er (%) = 87 and R.S.D. = 0.94% (n = 10 at 0.5 μg·mL﹣1 level). The minimum detectable amount was 15 ng·mL﹣1 while a concentration of 44 ng·mL﹣1 was calculated as determination limit. The optimized method was applied to the determination of amantadine in biological fluids.
Social Capital, Perceptions and Economic Performance  [PDF]
José A. Hernández, César Guerrero-Luchtenberg
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2016.62024
Abstract: This paper describes how social capital emerges, relates to economic performance and evolves in the long run. Using the concept of psychological equilibrium, two types of individuals are generated in the population regarding their willingness to cooperate. We propose an evolutionary (learning) process over those types driven by the total payoffs of the psychological game, and provide a complete description of its dynamics. Macro-perceptions, defined as the individual perception of how cooperative the society is as a whole, are key to explain convergence to the full social capital state in the long run.
Impedancia longitudinal de un gas bidimensional de electrones en régimen de efecto Hall cuántico
Hernández, C.;Chaubet, C.;
Revista mexicana de física , 2009,
Abstract: we have measured the longitudinal impedance of a two dimensional electron gas in the quantum hall effect regime. we have found smooth resonances of impedance for the middle of quantized plateaus and large resonances at the beginning and the end of the plateaus. those resonances can be partially described using a simplified electrical circuit model. the analysis of the different experimental results shows a great influence of the experimental setup on the experimental measurements.
