Abstract: Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) is considered the main cause of end stage kidney disease around the world. However, its pathogenesis is not completely established. More than just a direct consequence of chronic glycemic changes, recent studies had suggested Diabetic Nephropathy could be considered an inflammatory disease. It has been shown that concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines, as IL-1, IL-6, IL-18, IL-33, IFN-γ and TNF-α actively participate in development and progression of DN, and thus, are involved in pathogenesis. Besides, changes in acquired immune response, especially the presence of cellular immune response profiles of pro-inflammatory and effector nature, mainly Th1 and Th17, as the imbalance between interaction of cytokines and T regulatory cells, foment the onset and progression of DN. Here we summarize the main evidences that support the critical role of the immune system in this condition. These new conceptual advances in DN understanding are essential for development of new the rapeutical strategies and prognostic factors, which could be protagonists or adjuvants to the current ones, leading ultimately to a better clinical management of DN patients.

Abstract: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) presents a strategic role in social and economic levels. The aim of this study was to elucidate the presence of genetic variability for the genus Oryza, and the possibility of using genotypes with wild characteristics in rice breeding programs. The Oryza genus shows great genetic variability through wild genotypes available in the most varied environments around the world. The negative effects imposed by abiotic stresses such as flood, salinity, low temperatures, water deficiency and high temperatures may be minimized by the efficient identification of a genetic variability source from the Oryza genus. Among the main wild species presented by the Oryza genus, Oryza glumaepatula stands out being an active source of germplasm. The occurrence and preservation of genetic variability of Oryza genus is indispensable to obtain new rice genotypes, to guarantee food security for the human population, as well as to develop genotypes that adapt to climatic changes and natural adversities.

Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572007000400015
Abstract: the genetic resistance of phaseolus vulgaris l. cultivar michelite to races 8 and 64 of colletotrichum lindemuthianum, causal agent of bean anthracnose, was characterized. crosses were made between michelite and mexico 222 cultivars and the f2 population was inoculated with race 64 in order to study the inheritance of resistance to anthracnose in michelite. the segregation of f2 population fitted in a ratio of 3r:1s, showing the presence of a dominant gene in michelite gene conditioning resistance to race 64. allelism tests were conducted with f2 populations derived from crosses between michelite and ab 136, and 277, bat 93, cornell 49-242, g 2333, kaboon, mexico 222, michigan dark red kidney (mrdk), ouro negro, perry marrow, pi 207262, to, tu, and widusa. all the cultivars (except mexico 222) were resistant to race 64. while f2 derived from the michelite x mexico 222 was inoculated with race 8. additionally, allelism tests indicated that the gene present in michelite is independent from co-1, co-2, co-3, co-4, co-5, co-6, co-7, co-9 and co-10 genes. the monogenic inheritance observed in michelite and the independence of this gene from those previously characterized allow the authors to propose that the anthracnose resistant gene in michelite should be named co-11.

Abstract: Universities have the mission to provide and to contemplate the general formations, socials and specifics to the students during their graduation courses. Students many times only value their technical formation in their areas, considering uninteresting themes like: Ethics, Health, Environment, Sexual Orientation, Work, Consumption, Cultural Plurality, among others. This project aims the authorship and application of knowledge-based competitions in quiz, built from the knowledge base with questions of traverse themes intuitively formatted and presented in agreement with pre-configured themes. The intention consists of uniting the "non-university" world to university, where students can participate motivated by the dispute and by offer of awards or activity hours for the best. This work was developed using the Visual Studio programming environment for Internet and using the Silverlight multimedia technology to enrich the presentation on the Internet and on the mobile devices.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the clinical applicability of two electronic apex locators (eals) - apex (septodont) and ipex (nsk) - in different groups of human teeth by using radiography. the working lengths (wls) of 100 root canals were determined electronically. the eal to be used first was chosen randomly and a k-file was inserted into the root canal until the eal display indicated the location of the apical constriction (0 mm). the k-file was fixed to the tooth and a periapical radiograph was taken using a radiographic film holder. the k-file was removed and the wl was measured. the same procedure was repeated using the other eal. radiographs were examined with the aid of a light-box with lens of ×4 magnification by two blinded experienced endodontists. the distance between the file tip and the root apex was recorded as follows: (a) +1 to 0 mm, (b) -0.1 to 0.5 mm, (c) -0.6 to 1 mm, (d) -1.1 to 1.5 mm, and (e) -1.6 mm or greater. for statistical purposes, these scores were divided into 2 subgroups according to the radiographic apex: acceptable (b, c, and d) and non-acceptable (a and e). statistically significant differences were not found between the results of apex and ipex in terms of acceptable and non-acceptable measurements (p>0.05) or in terms of the distance recorded from file tip and the radiographic apex (p>0.05). apex and ipex eals provided reliable measurements for wl determination for endodontic therapy.

Gon?alves-Vidigal, Maria Celeste;Silvério, Lucas;Elias, Haroldo Tavares;Vidigal Filho, Pedro Soares;Kvitschal, Marcus Vinícius;Retuci, Vanessa Silva;Silva, Claudete Rosa da;
Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2008000900007
Abstract: the objective of this work was to determine the combining ability and heterosis, for productivity and yield components, in diallel hybrids derived from crossings between brsmg-talism?, ipr uirapuru, ft soberano, brs campeiro, iac tybat?, and ipr juriti parent cultivars. fifteen hybrids were generated from diallel crosses, excluding reciprocals. the general and specific combining abilities were significant for plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, number of seeds per pod, 50-seed weight, and grain yield, indicating the occurrence of both additive and nonadditive genetic effects. the best strategy to be adopted is the use of brs campeiro, ft soberano and brsmg-talism? cultivars in common bean breeding programs involving selection. the most promising combinations were 'ipr uirapuru' x 'iac tybat?', 'ipr uirapuru' x 'ft soberano', 'brs campeiro' x 'ipr juriti', and 'brs campeiro' x 'iac tybat?'. the parents of these hybrids presented high estimates of specific combining abilities. hybridization of cultivars belonging to distinguished commercial groups propitiates higher heterosis values in the segregant population.
