Abstract: Mesenteric adenitis consists of an important differential diagnosis of potentially serious diseases such as acute appendicitis, since they manifest themselves with a similar clinical picture. Case report: A 17-year-old male patient presented with periumbilical abdominal pain for 2 days, of abrupt onset and moderate intensity, who gave away with a common analgesic, which progressed to the right iliac fossa (RIF) and increased of intensity. He also reported liquid diarrhea, with several episodes a day, without mucus and/or blood, 38°C fever, anorexia and vomiting. He was hospitalized for investigating a possible diagnostic of Acute Appendicitis. In the exams, it was considered mesenteric adenitis, and antibiotic therapy was prescribed. The patient had complete improvement at the end of treatment. Conclusions: Given its importance as a differential diagnosis of numerous pathologies, as well as controversial before the therapeutic and diagnostic conduct, it is essential to report these cases in order to elucidate the specificities of this disease.

Abstract: Introduction: Splenic cysts are uncommon and usually do not generate signs and symptoms, being diagnosed by incidental findings. Case report: A 35-year-old, female patient attended the Luiz Gioseffi Jannuzzi School Hospital (HELGJ) presenting episodes of vomiting and abdominal pain in the left hypochondrium. She was hospitalized for diagnostic investigation. Computed tomography showed the splenic cyst. The procedure was the surgical approach by laparotomy with splenectomy. Histopathological confirmed the diagnosis. Discussion: Compared to the scarce reports in literature, the case described presented typical epidemiology and clinical features. Conclusions: Given the rarity of this pathology cases, it is essential to report these in order to elucidate the specificities and also to discuss diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

Abstract: Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) occurrence is uncommon and usually manifested by nonspecific signs and symptoms, which hinders its reasoning as a diagnostic hypothesis. The objective is to report a case of female GIST with curative treatment through video-laparoscopy with partial gastrectomy. Case report: A 61-year-old female patient attended the Luiz Gioseffi Jannuzzi School Hospital (HELGJ) emergency room, with a sudden onset of upper gastrointestinal bleeding with hemodynamic instability. After stabilization, she was admitted for diagnostic investigation, showing sub-epithelial lesion of antrum in upper digestive endoscopy (UDE) and solid-cystic mass in the gastric antrum to computed tomography (CT). The conduct was the video laparoscopy surgical approach with partial gastrectomy. The histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of the surgical specimen showed a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in a gastric antrum of low grade of malignancy, positive e-Kit and mycotic index (50 cga) < 5. Discussion: Compared to the scarce reports in literature, the case described presented typical epidemiology, but the clinical picture was not the most incident. Conclusions: Given the rarity of this pathology cases, it is essential to report these in order to elucidate the specificities and also to discuss diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
Aprendizado evolucionário, inércia inflacionária e recess?o em desinfla??es monetárias

Abstract: this paper aims at explaining the casual evidence that monetary disinflations produce recessions, using the evolutionary game theory framework. this is an appealing framework for analyzing this issue because it combines two ingredients commonly blamed for the costs of credible disinflations: limited rationality and coordination failures. the study of a disinflation episode is the analysis of a transition between two steady state equilibria. the dynamics between those two equilibria is generated by the replicator dynamics, which is based on an appealing strategy selection rule: the use of strategies that have a worse than average performance is reduced through time. the disinflation costs in our model depend on how fast passive agents - who continue to use the strategy that was optimal in the inflationary equilibrium - are converted into active agents - who adopt maximizing strategies during the transition.

Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.58A2007
Abstract:

Serous Background: There are few studies assessing the clinical manifestations of sleep breathing disorders and polysomnograms in several pediatric age ranges. This studied aimed to assess polysomnography results such as apnea-hypopnea index, mean oxygen saturation and sleep efficiency in children presenting with airway obstruction and adenotonsillar hypertrophy complaints, and to establish whether they are correlated to age and sex. Methods: A retrospective study with children of both sexes, aged between 2 and 12 years, with clinically suspected obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and adenotonsillar hypertrophy, who underwent polysomnography before surgery. The children were allocated to groups according to their age range (Group I: 2 to 4 years old; Group II: 5 to 8 years old; Group III: 9 to 12 years old). Apnea-hypopnea index, mean oxygen saturation and sleep efficiency data were compared between sexes and among the three groups (Student’s t test, p < 0.05). Results: Of 167 children studied by polysomnography, 76.6% were of school age and 67% were male. For all studied age ranges, there was no difference between sexes for the investigated parameters (body mass index, apnea-hypopnea index, mean oxygen saturation and sleep efficiency). As regards mean oxygen saturation, Group I showed the lowest value (89.9 ± 6.2). Apnea-hypopnea indexes were higher in male children aged between 2 and 4 years (9.9 ± 5.2). Group III had the lowest sleep efficiency (84.1 ± 9.2). Conclusion: There was a predilection of more severe cases of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome for children younger than four years, shown by higher apnea-hypopnea index per hour and lower mean oxygen saturation in this age range.

Abstract: The bacteria Staphylococcus aureus is found in the nasal passages, mouth and skin of the human population and stands out among foodborne diseases. Some causes of foodborne illness are related with food, handlers, and utensils contamination in a hospital’s nutrition service. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of S. aureus in food handlers, equipment, counter-tops and utensils of the nutrition service of a teaching hospital. Samples of the environment, hands and nasal mucosa of employees of a nutrition service were collected with two sterile swabs, in 2016, March and June. A total of 134 samples were obtained, which were submitted to characterization tests Biochemistry and morphotinorial (gram staining, catalase and coagulase tests in tube), phenotypic evaluation by drug diffusion technique and D-test approach, and the biofilm phenotype characterization by culture on Congo Red Agar. Results showed high rates of S. aureus colonization, mainly in the kitchen, high frequency of antimicrobial resistance, especially erythromycin and the presence of multi-resistant microorganisms. Large number of positive samples was also found for biofilm production, with totality for the samples of handlers. We highlight the relevance of the data in virtue of the serious consequences and risks that can be triggered in the hospital environment.

Abstract: variations in the adult male reproductive system among different groups of hymenoptera offer characteristics that help studies on behavior and phylogenetics. the objective of this study was to describe the adult male reproductive system of three trypoxylon (trypargilum) species. for that, tissues were disseced, fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 m sodium cacodylate buffer, ph 7.2 and postfixed in 1% osmium tetroxide. the material was dehydratated and embedded for light and electron transmission microscopes. the species have similar reproductive systems, which are formed by a pair of testes, each one with three fusiforme follicles, from which emerges an efferent duct that later joins forming a deferent duct. the deferent duct opens into an ejaculatory duct. the first half of the deferent duct is enlarged and differentiated in a region specialized in sperm storage, the seminal vesicle. the accessory gland flows in the post-vesicular region of the deferent duct. the testes and vesicles are both covered with a conjunctive capsule. sexually mature individuals have all spermatogenesis stages in their follicles. sperms are released from testes in bundles which are disorganized inside seminal vesicles.

Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the use of subconjunctival bevacizumab on corneal neovascularization in an experimental rabbit model for its effect on vessel extension, inflammation, and corneal epithelialization. methods: in this prospective, randomized, blinded, experimental study, 20 rabbits were submitted to a chemical trauma with sodium hydroxide and subsequently divided into two groups. the experimental group received a subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab (0.15 m; 3.75 mg), and the control group received an injection of 0.15 ml saline solution. after 14 days, two blinded digital photograph analyses were conducted to evaluate the inflammation/diameter of the vessels according to pre-established criteria. a histopathological analysis of the cornea evaluated the state of the epithelium and the number of polymorphonuclear cells. results: a concordance analysis using kappa's statistic showed a satisfactory level of agreement between the two blinded digital photography analyses. the neovascular vessel length was greater in the control group (p<0.01) than in the study group. however, the histopathological examination revealed no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of the state of the epithelium and the number of polymorphonuclear cells. conclusions: subconjunctival bevacizumab inhibited neovascularization in the rabbit cornea. however, this drug was not effective at reducing inflammation. the drug did not induce persistent corneal epithelial defects.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of reciprocal recurrent selection in producing hybrids of popcorn (zea mays) from superior endogamous progenies, with full-sibling families. the reciprocal recurrent selection program involved the 'vi?osa' and 'beija-flor' popcorn populations. tests of the hybrids s0xs0 and s1xs1 were carried out in lattice design, in the agricultural years 2002/2003 and 2004/2005. the two assays included common commercial controls, allowing for the comparison of the hybrids performance. productivity and expansion capacity were evaluated. direct and indirect gains with selection were predicted on expansion capacity assessed in hot air and metric weight volume tester popcorn makers. the gains observed were calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the reciprocal recurrent selection. the covariance analyses showed genotypic variability in the populations. when compared to the commercial controls, the s0xs0 hybrids were inferior in quality and equivalent in productivity; and the s1xs1 hybrids were equivalent in both traits. the observed gain in expansion capacity was substantial (around 4 ml g-1) and higher than the predicted gain (2.8 ml g-1). the reduction observed in productivity was not relevant. reduction in the genotypic variability was verified for expansion capacity. the reciprocal recurrent selection method was efficient in producing s1xs1 hybrids superior to s0xs0 hybrids.
