Bioethical Questions in Brazilian Scientific Research  [PDF]
Sonia Vieira
International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2014.516130

It is considered here that the ethical behavior of the Brazilian scientific community leaves a lot to be desired. Motives for ethical lapses can be summed up by one only: the haste to grow at any price in order to earn prestige and wealth, setting at naught those who don’t have the political support of the institution. With this intent, many researchers publish whatever they can, neglecting the fact that scientific research should serve the interests of the community—not their own.

Spacial and Temporal Variation of Degradation of Organic Matter by Benthic Macroinvertebrates  [PDF]

Journal of Environmental Protection (JEP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jep.2013.411A001

Leaf litter input from riparian landscapes has been identified as both a major energy flow to stream ecosystems and as a food source for stream macroinvertebrates. In this study the benthic macroinvertebrate community was used to evaluate the decomposition of organic matter in river systems. The aim of this work was to study the decomposition of organic matter using the benthic macroinvertebrate colonization. The research was developed over five months (January 2011 to May 2011) in four different sites, distributed along the River Ferreira terminal area, northern Portugal. A litter bag experiment was used to examine the role of macroinvertebrate communities in the processing of organic material on the river. Litter bags were placed in the water and collected every 7, 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days. In litter bags was observed a high abundance of Oligochaeta and Chironomidae, which are characterized by being detritivorous-herbivores and filtering collectors, respectively, indicating the benthic macroinvertebrate more involved on the decomposition of organic matter. These results contributed to increase current knowledge about benthic macroinvertebrate communities and may serve as incentive for future research works.

Nascer e Crescer - Revista do Hospital de Crian?as Maria Pia , 2011,
Abstract: introduction: the pseudohypoparathyroidism includes a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by parathyroid hormone action resistance of target organs. case report: we report the case of a nine year-old child with generalized convulsions and cramps since the age of four and six years, respectively. he presented dysmorphic features, cataracts, delayed teeth eruption, chvostek and trousseau signs, psychomotor delay and short stature. brain tomographic scan revealed cerebral intraparenquimatous calcifications. the presence of hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia and increased parathyroid hormone established the diagnosis of pseudohypoparathyroidism. the phenotype of albright hereditary osteodystrophy associated with changes in thyroid function are suggestive of pseudohypoparathyroidism ia, the most frequent type. the patient had irregular adherence to therapy, which caused several metabolic decompensation. conclusion: we emphasize that hypocalcemia should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children seizures. early diagnosis and proper compliance to therapy should prevent damage associated with hypocalcemia.

Abstract: firstly, by using plato's, aristotle's and sextus empiricus' texts, i explain the meaning of synanaire)sthai in the context of the dimensions of being and soul's affections. after that, i proceed then to hegel's commentary on plato's dialectic. in this part of the text, i discuss the meanings of synanaire)sthai and aufheben as well as some differences of hegel's and plato's dialectics.
A política e as bases do direito educacional
Cadernos CEDES , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-32622001000300002
Abstract: taking education as a mediation element, this essay refers to the relationship among society, state and law. it begins defining distinct and remarkable moments of social policy in the xxthcentury, in brazil: 1) social policy as a control upon politics (1930-1954); 2) social policy as control policy (1964-1988); 3) social policy with no social rights (from 1988 on). the ideas of civil society, citizenship, civil, political and social rights are then reviewed to characterize the so-called democratic rule of law and pinpoint some basic elements of democracy. the 1988 federal constitution establishes the democratic rule of law and clarifies the educational policy to be implemented in brazil. based on the numberless articles throughout the constitutional text and on their connection to international treaties, in the field of education, that either precede, are contemporary or follow its promulgation, this educational policy is widely commented. as a matter of fact, the federal constitution reinforces the juridical tradition of education in the brazilian constitutional texts, thus assuming its constitutionality. actually, through different articles scattered within it, the 1988 constitution defines the juridical regulation of education, transforming it into a subjective public right. this is a crucial point, since brazilians have the right to petition the state for education, as the competent authorities cannot be exonerated from their liability. this essay shows that the educational law goes beyond a mere exposition of the teaching legislation, inasmuch as education becomes an individual and collective, juridical asset, even though the constitutional determinations are not always enforced.
Forma??o de leitores de literatura na escola brasileira: caminhadas e labirintos
Vieira, Alice;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742008000200009
Abstract: this article presents the official proposals of both the ministry of education and s?o paulo state secretariat of education for literature teaching at schools, analyzing the different theoretical viewpoints of their authors and the socio-historical context in which they have been elaborated. the overall panorama observed in the analysis of these proposals shows a significant change in the way the portuguese language discipline must be examined and taught by teachers, prioritizing the teaching objectives instead of the traditional lists of content. as an immediate consequence of this change, there is a new language teaching approach based on the psychosocial conception, without dividing teaching into blocks: grammar, (history) of literature and writing. however, a wide gap is observed between the goals of these official documents and the actual experiences undergone by most brazilian schools and their teachers, since the ratification of the importance of literature teaching to empower students as readers does not assure educators the knowledge and the necessary know-how to insert literature teaching in the language studies. in view of this peculiarity of literature teaching in brazil, the survey conducted seeks to point out the differences between the documents and, at the same time, to comment on the situation experienced by students and teachers in the period.
Cidadania Global e Estado Nacional
Vieira, Liszt;
Dados , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0011-52581999000300001
Abstract: the globalization process has weakened national states, which have lost their ability to formulate autonomous national policies and guarantee the classic principles of state sovereignty. citizens? rights, traditionally linked to the national state, are threatened by the globalization process. in recent decades we have witnessed an extraordinary worldwide growth in organizations from civil society, who are faced with the states? reasons and the interests of transnational corporations in the international sphere. based on empirical research by the united nations, the world bank, and other international agencies, we identify a trend towards the formation of a global civil society, which has been exerting influence on international decisions, thus contributing to the democratization of the world?s political system.
Representa??o Mental: As Dificuldades na Atividade Cognitiva e Metacognitiva na Resolu??o de Problemas Matemáticos
Vieira, Elaine;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722001000200017
Abstract: this study is included in the field of cognitive investigation. it encloses the difficulties of comprehension strategies of the mental representation phase regarding the solution of verbal stated mathematical problems, seen in teachers of the first years of basic education. the difficulties, related to the mental representation construction, were analyzed, more specifically the ones associated to the integration phase. the processes, which account for changes in the initial mental representation are also investigated: encoding, combination and selective comparison. the results show that psychopedagogical intervention on cognitive monitoring allowed teachers to work on their own cognitive and metacognitive activities, as well as control and regulate the cognitive functions related to processes of representational change, thus reducing significantly the difficulties in the use of strategies for solving mathematical problems
Chelated minerals for poultry
Vieira, SL;
Revista Brasileira de Ciência Avícola , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-635X2008000200001
Abstract: organic minerals have been subject of an increasing number of investigations recently. these compounds can be considered the most significant event regarding commercial forms of minerals targeting animal supplementation in the last decades. minerals, especially metals, are usually supplemented in poultry feeds using cheap saline sources and have never required a lot of attention in terms of quality. on the other hand, definitions of organic minerals are very broad and frequently lead to confusion when decision-making becomes necessary. organic minerals include any mineral bound to organic compounds, regardless of the type of existing bond between mineral and organic molecules. proteins and carbohydrates are the most frequent candidates in organic mineral combinations. organic fraction size and bond type are not limitations in organic mineral definition; however, essential metals (cu, fe, zn, and mn) can form coordinated bonds, which are stable in intestinal lumen. metals bound to organic ligands by coordinated bonds can dissociate within animal metabolism whereas real covalent bonds cannot. chelated minerals are molecules that have a metal bound to an organic ligand through coordinated bonds; but many organic minerals are not chelates or are not even bound through coordinated bonds. utilization of organic minerals is largely dependent on the ligand; therefore, amino acids and other small molecules with facilitated access to the enterocyte are supposed to be better utilized by animals. organic minerals with ligands presenting long chains may require digestion prior to absorption. after absorption, organic minerals may present physiological effects, which improve specific metabolic responses, such as the immune response. many studies have demonstrated the benefits of metal-amino acid chelates on animal metabolism, but the detection positive effects on live performance is less consistent.
