Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) Applied in the Differentiation of Arabica and Robusta Coffee  [PDF]

Abstract: Coffee is one of the most consumed and commercialized crops in the world, which is why there is a potential risk to find arabica coffee (an expensive variety) adulterated with robusta coffee (a cheaper variety). The currently used technique for certifying coffee, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), requires the sample to be subjected to a chemical treatment prior to analysis; in addition, the equipment is bulky and can not be moved easily. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a technique which does not require that samples be subjected to a chemical pretreatment, and equipment is small and portable, this can save valuable time in coffee trading. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate that LIBS can be applied to solve various problems related with the coffee authentication. Green coffee pills with different concentrations of arabica and robusta varieties were analyzed by LIBS, the results were used in the construction of calibration curves for the detection of the degree of simulated adulteration in coffee. It was found that the relative intensities of Ca (392.4 nm), Sr (407.1 nm), N (500.5 nm) and Na (588.7 nm), as well as the intensity ratios of Ca II (392.4 nm)/N I (500.5 nm), Sr I (407.1 nm)/N I (500.5 nm)and N I (500.5 nm)/Na I (588.7 nm) can be used for this purpose. It is concluded that the differentiation of coffee and the detection of its adulteration is possible with the use of LIBS. Further, with the use of an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) of type Multilayer Perceptron, it was possible to correctly classify the spectra of arabica and robusta roasted coffee.

Abstract: physiological aspects were evaluated to determine optimal conditions for the decolorization of a synthetic dye, poly r-478, by white-rot fungus trametesversicolor # 52j. the decolorization experiments were carried out in semicontinuous operation during three cycles to improve the process efficiency. the best decolorization efficiencies (65% to 80%) were obtained in fungal cultures performed in nitrogen limited conditions under aerobic conditions.

Abstract: the genetic stability of solanum tuberosum l. cv. désirée plantlets obtained from embryogenic cell suspension cultures that were induced from mixoploidy calli tissue with abundant binucleated cells was analyzed. plants regenerated from these tissues showed an euploid number of chromosomes (2n=4x=48). this result indicates that in this system, euploid cells were selected to go through a somatic embryogenesis process and plant regeneration. genotype stability of the regenerated plants was screened by rapd analysis. the results indicated that the new plant population was highly homogeneous
Niveles de plomo en sangre y factores de exposición en ni?os del estado de Morelos, México

Abstract: objective: to assess blood lead levels and lead exposure factors in children living in morelos state, mexico. material and methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted between june and october 1996, in 232 children aged 1-12 years, at hospital del ni?o morelense de cuernavaca, morelos, mexico. blood lead levels were measured by anodic voltameter, and exposure factors were collected by questionnaire. the lead concentration value was log transformed for statistical analysis. odds ratios were obtained for some risk factors. the statistical significative risk factors were later analyzed with anova. results: a total of 232 children were recruited (50% female); 73% resided in cuernavaca city. the geometric mean blood lead level was 6.7 μg/dl; 29.7% of the children had levels over 10 μg/dl; 66% reported use of lead glazed pottery for cooking, 36% for storing food, and 19% for drinking. conclusions: blood lead levels were similar to those reported in other mexican children studies, after the reduction of lead in gasoline. the main risk factors were use of lead glazed pottery and vehicle traffic intensity near the household. these results will be useful for future prevention and control interventions.
Niveles de plomo en sangre y factores de exposición en ni os del estado de Morelos, México

Abstract: OBJETIVO: Evaluar los niveles de plomo en sangre de ni os morelenses y sus factores de exposición. MATERIAL Y MéTODOS: Estudio transversal para analizar, por voltametría anódica, los niveles de plomo en sangre de 232 ni os de 1 a 12 a os de edad, que acudieron de junio a octubre de 1996 al Hospital del Ni o Morelense de Cuernavaca, Morelos, México. Los factores de exposición se indagaron por cuestionario. El valor de concentración de plomo se transformó al logaritmo natural; se estimó la razón de momios para algunos factores de exposición que se incorporaron a un modelo de ANOVA. RESULTADOS: Se reclutaron 232 ni os (50% mujeres); 73% residentes en Cuernavaca. La media geométrica de plomo en sangre fue 6.7 μg/dl; 29.7% rebasaron los 10 μg/dl; 66% tenían antecedente de cocinar alimentos en barro vidriado; 36% de almacenar alimentos, y 19%, consumo de líquidos en ese material. CONCLUSIONES: Los niveles encontrados son similares a los reportados en otras poblaciones pediátricas mexicanas en los últimos a os. Entre los principales factores de exposición destacan el uso de barro vidriado para consumo de alimentos o líquidos y la intensidad del tráfico donde viven. Este es el primer estudio que documenta los niveles de plomo en sangre en población infantil de Morelos, México, y sus resultados son punto de partida para acciones futuras de control y prevención.

Abstract: En la primera fase del proyecto en estudio, cuyos resultados se presentan a continuación, se dise a un modelo con una fundamentación teórica que se explica como contexto del producto final al que se llegó, junto con una prueba piloto con la que se inicia la validación que se está desarrollando en la segunda fase. Se pretende, en primer lugar, explicar el proceso de revisión conceptual que permitió dise ar un Modelo de Indicadores de Gestión Sostenible, se alando brevemente las características del mismo y sus componentes. En la segunda parte se muestra la importancia del sector turístico en Bogotá, para sustentar la pertinencia de dise ar un modelo que busque mejorar su competitividad. La tercera parte muestra las observaciones realizadas por empresarios del sector turístico a los indicadores propuestos en el modelo. Al final se presentan algunas conclusiones en torno a esta experiencia investigativa.
Vascular endothelial growth factor regulates melanoma cell adhesion and growth in the bone marrow microenvironment via tumor cyclooxygenase-2

Abstract: Herein we analyzed the effect of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor celecoxib in a model of generalized BM dissemination of left cardiac ventricle-injected B16 melanoma (B16M) cells into healthy and bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-pretreated mice to induce inflammation. In addition, B16M and human A375 melanoma (A375M) cells were exposed to conditioned media from basal and LPS-treated primary cultured murine and human BMSCs, and the contribution of COX-2 to the adhesion and proliferation of melanoma cells was also studied.Mice given one single intravenous injection of LPS 6 hour prior to cancer cells significantly increased B16M metastasis in BM compared to untreated mice; however, administration of oral celecoxib reduced BM metastasis incidence and volume in healthy mice, and almost completely abrogated LPS-dependent melanoma metastases. In vitro, untreated and LPS-treated murine and human BMSC-conditioned medium (CM) increased VCAM-1-dependent BMSC adherence and proliferation of B16M and A375M cells, respectively, as compared to basal medium-treated melanoma cells. Addition of celecoxib to both B16M and A375M cells abolished adhesion and proliferation increments induced by BMSC-CM. TNFα and VEGF secretion increased in the supernatant of LPS-treated BMSCs; however, anti-VEGF neutralizing antibodies added to B16M and A375M cells prior to LPS-treated BMSC-CM resulted in a complete abrogation of both adhesion- and proliferation-stimulating effect of BMSC on melanoma cells. Conversely, recombinant VEGF increased adherence to BMSC and proliferation of both B16M and A375M cells, compared to basal medium-treated cells, while addition of celecoxib neutralized VEGF effects on melanoma. Recombinant TNFα induced B16M production of VEGF via COX-2-dependent mechanism. Abstract: the utility of steroids is a frequent topic of debate in any disease in which an inflammatory component is associated. the physiological rationale for the use of antiinflammatory agents has an important base that is supported by experimental studies in both animals and human beings. however, up to now, its efficiency has not been made clear in the clinical practice. in this article, we aim to summarize and analyze the different studies that evaluate the effect of steroids in ards -with different doses and for different moments of the course- that may help to clarify the indication or not of these medications.

Abstract: El empleo de esteroides es un tema frecuente de debate para cualquier enfermedad que conlleve un componente inflamatorio. El fundamento fisiológico para el uso de agentes antiinflamatorios tiene una importante base sustentada en estudios de experimentación, tanto en animales como en humanos; sin embargo, hasta el momento no está clara su efectividad en la práctica clínica. En este artículo pretendemos resumir y analizar diferentes estudios que valoran el efecto de los esteroides en el síndrome de disnea agudo -con diferentes dosis y en diferentes momentos de la evolución- que pueden contribuir a dar luz sobre la indicación, o no, de estos fármacos.
