Analytical Electron Microscopy for Characterization of Fluid or Semi-Solid Multiphase Systems Containing Nanoparticulate Material

Abstract: The analysis of nanomaterials in pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparations is an important aspect both in formulation development and quality control of marketed products. Despite the increased popularity of nanoparticulate compounds especially in dermal preparations such as emulsions, methods and protocols of analysis for the characterization of such systems are scarce. This work combines an original sample preparation procedure along with different methods of analytical electron microscopy for the comprehensive analysis of fluid or semi-solid dermal preparations containing nanoparticulate material. Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy and high resolution imaging were performed on model emulsions and a marketed product to reveal different structural aspects of both the emulsion bulk phase and incorporated nanosized material. An innovative analytical approach for the determination of the physical stability of the emulsion under investigation is presented. Advantages and limitations of the employed analytical imaging techniques are highlighted.
Semi-solid Sucrose Stearate-Based Emulsions as Dermal Drug Delivery Systems

Abstract: Mild non-ionic sucrose ester surfactants can be employed to produce lipid-based drug delivery systems for dermal application. Moreover, sucrose esters of intermediate lipophilicity such as sucrose stearate S-970 possess a peculiar rheological behavior which can be employed to create highly viscous semi-solid formulations without any further additives. Interestingly, it was possible to develop both viscous macroemulsions and fluid nanoemulsions with the same chemical composition merely by slight alteration of the production process. Optical light microscopy and cryo transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the sucrose ester led to the formation of an astonishing hydrophilic network at a concentration of only 5% w/w in the macroemulsion system. A small number of more finely structured aggregates composed of surplus surfactant were likewise detected in the nanoemulsions. These discoveries offer interesting possibilities to adapt the low viscosity of fluid O/W nanoemulsions for a more convenient application. Moreover, a simple and rapid production method for skin-friendly creamy O/W emulsions with excellent visual long-term stability is presented. It could be shown by franz-cell diffusion studies and in vitro tape stripping that the microviscosity within the semi-solid formulations was apparently not influenced by their increased macroviscosity: the release of three model drugs was not impaired by the complex network-like internal structure of the macroemulsions. These results indicate that the developed semi-solid emulsions with advantageous application properties are highly suitable for the unhindered delivery of lipophilic drugs despite their comparatively large particle size and high viscosity.

Abstract:
Medical surgical nurses frequently care for patients with psychiatric disorders as one in four people have a diagnosed psychiatric disorder. Since these nurses specialize in medical surgical nursing, they often feel they lack the expertise to care for patients with co-morbid psychiatric problems. This article presents three case studies and delineates nursing care strategies which could assist the medical-surgical nurses in caring for this population.
Differential Phosphorylation of Ribosomal Proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana Plants during Day and Night

Abstract: Protein synthesis in plants is characterized by increase in the translation rates for numerous proteins and central metabolic enzymes during the day phase of the photoperiod. The detailed molecular mechanisms of this diurnal regulation are unknown, while eukaryotic protein translation is mainly controlled at the level of ribosomal initiation complexes, which also involves multiple events of protein phosphorylation. We characterized the extent of protein phosphorylation in cytosolic ribosomes isolated from leaves of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana harvested during day or night. Proteomic analyses of preparations corresponding to both phases of the photoperiod detected phosphorylation at eight serine residues in the C-termini of six ribosomal proteins: S2-3, S6-1, S6-2, P0-2, P1 and L29-1. This included previously unknown phosphorylation of the 40S ribosomal protein S6 at Ser-231. Relative quantification of the phosphorylated peptides using stable isotope labeling and mass spectrometry revealed a 2.2 times increase in the day/night phosphorylation ratio at this site. Phosphorylation of the S6-1 and S6-2 variants of the same protein at Ser-240 increased by the factors of 4.2 and 1.8, respectively. The 1.6 increase in phosphorylation during the day was also found at Ser-58 of the 60S ribosomal protein L29-1. It is suggested that differential phosphorylation of the ribosomal proteins S6-1, S6-2 and L29-1 may contribute to modulation of the diurnal protein synthesis in plants.

Abstract: Many techniques are met in the literature, trying to investigate the effect of TV watching hours on BMI. However, we haven’t traced any empirical study with co-integration analysis, as it is applied here. With this in mind, we present in this paper the proper methodology, based on the co-integration analysis for a detailed justification of the effect of TV viewing hours together with some minor changes in life style of participants on BMI. Apart from finding and testing an acceptable co-integration relation, we further formulated an error correction model to determine the coefficient of adjustment. All findings, which are fully justified, are presented in details in the relevant sections. It should be pointed out, that we haven’t met this type of analysis in the relevant literature.

Abstract:

Technology Transfer and Technology Diffusion body of knowledge emerge from the research interest to explore the demand side of technology transfer by identifying the firm’s technology readiness to operate a new technology—product and process—in the context of the transfer of technology from a single source to multiple receivers/users—termed vertical diffusion—, where the adoption is by mandate. Demarcating the e-Invoice document as technology transfer object, this paper presents results of quantitative study performed with data collected from a 137 small retail firms, oriented to identify their technology readiness in terms of technology infrastructure and skills to operate under the electronic invoice legal procedure, as well as their perceived barriers for the diffusion. Results of factor analysis reveal insufficient information among all the participant firms, reflecting poor communication from the technology source, low awareness for the software solution available and of the competences/skills required to operate it as well as a passive attitude from the adopter who leans in a third party option to face the mandate.

Investigating Road Safety Management Systems in the European Countries: Patterns and Particularities  [PDF]

Abstract: A road safety management (RSM) system can be defined as “a complex institutional structure that involves cooperating and interacting bodies which support the tasks and processes necessary for the prevention and reduction of road traffic injuries”. RSM should promote the road safety progress of the country. However, the details of this relationship are generally lacking. This study explored the RSM systems in European countries based on the information collected through interviews with experts and officials, in each country, and using a “good practice” criteria questionnaire. The dataset included 14 countries with fifty items related to five RSM areas: institutional organization; policy formulation and adoption; policy implementation and funding; monitoring and evaluation; scientific support, information and capacity building. Cluster analyses and correlations were used to identify country groups with similar RSM components, to recognize typical RSM structures if available and to examine the relationship between RSM and road safety performance of the countries. The findings showed that all the countries are different when RSM systems are considered as a whole, making it impossible to identify typical RSM structures or a single best working model at a national level. However, it is possible to compare countries when the RSM areas are considered separately, where the clusters of countries recognized by the study present the patterns common for those European countries. Across the analyses, a number of countries with a consistently higher and lower availability of the RSM components were identified, enabling a final countries’ ranking into a number of groups. The latter actually reflects the level of RSM in the country, in terms of its correspondence to the “good practice” criteria. A further analysis indicated a positive correlation between the higher level of the RSM system and better safety performance of the countries.

Abstract: Framing the analysis of Technology influences in an extended scenario of macroeconomic topics of the kind of Money Supply, attention is given to changes in economic paradigms that technology is constantly creating globally, focusing the research interest in the nature of the relation between cross border E-Commerce online money flows and Money Supply. As this context requires to find an explanation that cannot be provided by pre-existing theory, the abduction or abductive approach is considered to be suitable to investigate how far available data on the matter fits with the stated research subject identified at a crossroad of Technology Theory, Business Theories and Monetary Theory. The findings disclose that the nature of this relation is rooted in the Directionality, Dynamism, Intensity and Structural Properties, connected in a relational net that favors the configuration of a Theoretical body of knowledge. From the propositions’ relational models shape, a key finding come into sight as is supported the notion that cross border E-Commerce online money transfer, is a process by which cash money in circulation (Money Aggregate M1) is transformed into highly liquid assets other than cash, referred to as Quasi-Money, leading to dynamic changes for Money Supply net value and in the velocity of money. This view is consistent with the appreciation that being online money flows one new additional component of M2, they are absorbed by Money Supply being for that reason a priority issue for monetary policy interest. A Financial Analysis Approach on the Promotion of Peace through Economic Interdependence  [PDF]

Abstract: The question of whether economic interdependence promotes peace is more than ever relevant once and again due to a series of conflicts around the globe. Two schools advocate the two opposite beliefs; these are Realism and Liberalism. The former supports that economic interdependence does not necessarily promote peace, whereas the latter trusts that it does. In our paper, we use a financial analysis—econometric approach to realize that there is evidence that supports that economic interdependence between two states in conflict does not promote peace since it has no significant impact on the configuration of the conflict. Consequently, it does not provide a significant enhancement in the levels of national security.
Health-related quality of life in different stages of chronic kidney disease and at initiation of dialysis treatment

Abstract: Cross-sectional design with 535 patients in CKD stages 2–5 and 55 controls assessed for HRQoL through SF-36 together with biomarkers.All HRQoL dimensions deteriorated significantly with CKD stages with the lowest scores in CKD 5. The largest differences between the patient groups were seen in ‘physical functioning’, ‘role physical’, ‘general health’ and in physical summary scores (PCS). The smallest disparities were seen in mental health and pain. Patients in CKD stages 2–3 showed significantly decreased HRQoL compared to matched controls, with differences of large magnitude - effect size (ES)?≥?.80 - in ‘general health’ and PCS. Patients in CDK 4 demonstrated deteriorated scores with a large magnitude in ‘physical function’, ‘general health’ and PCS compared to the patients in CKD 2–3. Patients in CKD 5 demonstrated deteriorated scores with a medium sized magnitude (ES 0.5 – 0.79) in ‘role emotional’ and mental summary scores compared to the patients in CKD 4. Glomerular filtration rate <45?ml/min/1.73?m2, age?≥?61?years, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, C-reactive protein (CRP) ≥5?mg/L, haemoglobin ≤110?g/L, p-albumin?≤?35?g/L and overweight were associated with impaired HRQoL. CRP and CVD were the most important predictors of impaired HRQoL, followed by reduced GFR and diabetes.Having CKD implies impaired HRQoL, also in earlier stages of the disease. At the time for dialysis initiation HRQoL is substantially deteriorated. Co-existing conditions, such as inflammation and cardiovascular disease seem to be powerful predictors of impaired HRQoL in patients with CKD. Within routine renal care, strategies to improve function and well-being considering the management of co-existing conditions like inflammation and CVD need to be developed.
