Using Technology for Ministry: Trends, Principles and Applications
Alfredo Vergel
Theological Librarianship , 2010,
Abstract: This survey of developments, guidelines and uses of technology by congregations and their leaders offers an overview of the topic and points to sources for further study. As technology plays a larger role in religious communities there is a need for guiding principles for its use. Congregational leaders do well to engage technology reflectively while staying informed on its possible applications in ministry. While this article is of primary interest to those in leadership positions at the congregational level, it can also serve both as a primer to seminary students and as a tool for librarians providing reference services on the topic.

Abstract: Heavy metals are normally found, in natural waters, in very low concentrations. Some of them are essential for life in low level; however, in higher level they are toxic. Therefore, analyzing their bio-available fraction is of main interest. Standard methodology is based in the collection of a number of samples from a water body. Collected samples must be stored, pre-treated and then analyzed. Pre-treatment usually involves pre-concentrating the metal, with the corresponding risk of contamination or loss of analyte. This way, punctual information is obtained from every sampling campaign. As an alternative, passive sampling techniques allow the continuous and coupled sampling-pre-treatment for heavy metals analysis, giving a better approach in the characterization of the studied water body. Liquid phase micro-extraction (LPME) is a green analytical alternative for liquid-liquid extraction that promotes a reduction of sample volume, solvent needed and waste generation. Using these systems, polypropylene hollow fibers (HF) with pores in their walls can be used. A few micro-liters of organic solvent are supported in the pores. The sample is placed in the outer part of the fiber and a receiving phase is placed in its inner part, allowing continuous liquid extraction of the metal from the sample. Several fibers with different physical features have been employed to analyzed total concentration and bio-availability of some heavy metals (Ag, Ni, Cu) in natural water samples. Thanks to fibers configuration, devices for passive sampling based in HF-LPME could be designed. Advantages of this methodology over existing ones are supported because the receiving phase is liquid. As a consequence, retained metals do not need to be eluted from the acceptor prior to instrumental analysis.

Revista Cubana de Enfermer?-a , 2010,
Abstract: abstract in nursing practice are present to care and the care. to learn the meaning of to care could to transform in words that the nursing professional has exerted in practice and teaching. a cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in “cira garcía” clinic during 2008 to assess the perception of to care according the criteria of 72 nurses well-disposed to participate in research. a scientific method was applied with an inductive and deductive approach. in information collection we used a semiestructured survey and the assessment scale of the care meaning (eesc). study variables include the care perception, age, sex, and years of practice, professional level and workplace. data were statistically analyzed with non-parametric tests. there was a female sex predominance (75%), age between 30 and 39 years (37,50), marital status (married) (66,66%) and more than 10 years of work experience (77,77%). the greatest differences were among conceptions by general and master nurses, in the care conceptions as a human characteristic (0,094) and as moral imperious (0,043). we concluded that there are differences in relation to nursing care conception among the researched care groups and categories. results emphasized the need of greater link between the teaching and its application in profession exercise.

Revista Cubana de Enfermer?-a , 2006,
Abstract: there is little information about the image society has of nursing and its social status. this problem affects the staff of this specialty, since there isn't a real knowledge of its role in society and this, at the same time, may not have a real concept of this profession. in caibarién, villa clara province, cuba, and in belize district , belize , central america , a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 2004 and 2005. the universe of study was composed of 32 600 inhabitants from cuba and 75 000 from belize . a stratified randomized sampling was performed, where sex and the place of residence were considered as strata. finally, 1 630 persons in cuba , and 1 600 in belize were included in the sample. all of them were interviewed to know their opinions on nursing care, the activities to be carried out by this personnel, the image they deserve and their social status. 46.16 % of the surveyed were men and 53.83 % were women. 93.50 in cuba , and 64,00 % in belize answered that nursing staff may be of both sexes. 91.80 % of cubans and 88,75 % of belizeans considered to have received a good nursing care. it was concluded that society in the studied communities, grants a high status to nursing and expects significant contributions from these professionals.
