Verónica Vargas-Sanhueza, Claudia Krause Mu?oz, Víctor Patricio Díaz-Narváez, Juan Fonseca Molina
Health (Health) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/health.2015.712191
Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish the differences in the oral health status of adult population between women and men by the clinical status of the permanent first molar. Methods: The data were obtained in a non-random sample of 132,174 patients from a large cohort who were under dental treatment nationwide in Chile during 2011. Results: The results show a greater frequency of “filled and not decayed” (45.6%), “decayed” (18.8%) and followed by “missing by decay” (15.4%). Moreover, an association is established between the “filled and decayed” condition to the female gender and the condition “decayed” and “missing by decay” to the male gender (Significance level α ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: This study concluded that there was a dependent association between gender and the oral health status of permanent first molars in adult patients.

MADERAS : Ciencia y Tecnología , 2013,
Abstract: Many pine bark extracts have antioxidant properties. This work examined bench scale extraction on the yield, the composition and antioxidant properties of Pinus radiata. Acetone solvent (98.7% w/w at 120 °C) yielded maximum phenols concentration, tannins concentration, anti-radical activity (DPPH) and reducing activity (FRAP), although its extraction yield was the lowest. When the organic solvent in the mixture decreased, the chelating activity increased (ICA) and antiradical and reducing activities decreased. The extract largest yield was obtained with water at 120oC, but the antioxidant properties were relatively poor. Taxifolin (dihydroquercetin) and catechin were the main extract components detected by RP-HPLC. The best extraction conditions for high extractive yield and antioxidant properties was achieved with ethanol/water at 120 °C.

Health (Health) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/health.2012.430152
Abstract: Background: Influenza A (H1N1) is the most recent pandemic disease that has affected the human population. Objective: To evaluate knowledge and preventive measures related with this disease one year after the epidemic of Mexico- that took place in 2009. Material and methods: An epidemiologic survey regarding influenza A (H1N1) was conducted in June 2010 among 2541 students from the second grade of all public high schools in a borough in Mexico City. The questionnaire included items on the knowledge of the disease and practice of preventive measures. Results: Most students obtained the information from television, half of them from parents and only one fifth from teachers; 72% of the participants had a favorable knowledge about the disease and the measures to avoid being infected. However, only 37% practiced such preventive measures. Conclusion: Knowledge has a positive influence on practices towards health. Parents and teachers have an important role in health education, thus efforts should be directed to involve them more intensely in health education.

The present article arises from studies developed at the GPFOPE, and its theme is teacher education, considering the processes engendered to their constitution. Thus, its fabric emerges from the confluence of ideas from a theoretical field within the field of UniversityPedagogy, combined with field research of these investigations. The main authors, within this line, who subsidize this study are: Bolzan (2001; 2002-2005; 2006; 2007-2009) and Isaia and Bolzan (2004; 2006; 2007). The findings indicate that the professor is formed in the course of his career training, thereby evidencing, the idea of incompleteness, which presupposes focusing professor formation in the perspective of a permanent learning process for teaching. Furthermore, as the studies indicate, it is equally necessary to consider that life trajectories have specific marks, which gives pause to the concept of personalized training. Therefore, it is understood that it is inherent to think that the learning of teaching and, therefore, professional development, Consequently, it is understood that it becomes inherent to think that learning how to teach, and therefore professional development, is stimulated when reflective practice are incorporated in conjunction with collaborative activities among the subjects of training.
Studies on the in vitro phototoxicity of the antidiabetes drug gliclazide.
Franklin Vargas,Carla Izzo,Tamara Zoltan,Verónica López
Avances en Química , 2006,
Abstract: The phototoxic antidiabetes drug gliclazide (1) is photolabile under aerobic conditions and UV-B light.Irradiation of a phosphate buffered solution of 1 under oxygen atmosphere produces two photoproducts. The photochemistry of 1 involves cleavage of the S-N and C(O)-N bonds of the urea unit. Red blood celllysis photosensitized by 1 was demonstrated. Their photoproducts didn't show this effect. Inhibition ofthis process by addition of DABCO, GSH, confirmed the possibility of the participation of free radicalsin the photoinduced hemolysis. Furthermore, in a lipid-photoperoxidation test with linoleic acid the invitro phototoxicity of gliclazide was also verified. The generation of singlet oxygen during the photolysisof gliclazide was ruled out by means of the histidine and NaN3 assays. In a supplementary study theability of 1 to inhibit free radical or reactive oxygen species (.OH, 1O2, H2O2) generated in cell-freesystems was investigated using chemiluminescence and electronic absorption spectra.
Antioxidant and scavenging activity of skyrin on free radical and some reactive oxygen species.
Franklin Vargas*,Carlos Rivas,Tamara Zoltan,Verónica López
Avances en Química , 2008,
Abstract: Skyrin is a natural product from some botanical species (fungi) and the first small molecular weight nonpeptidic antidiabetic agents. Now, the objective of this study was to investigate the ability of skyrin to inhibit free radical and some reactive oxygen species as .OH, 1O2, H2O2 generated in cell-free systems using isoluminol and luminol- enhanced chemiluminescence and electronic absorption spectra as monitors. In the presence of skyrin a dose-dependent inhibition period was observed in this system as assayed by isoluminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (ILCL) in the presence of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), as well as by luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (LCL) in the presence of H2O2 or ferrous ion. On the other hand, skyrin showed an efficient scavenging activity of galvanoxyl radical in ethanolic solutions. In a separate experiment the trapping of singlet oxygen (1O2) generated by rose bengal in the presence of skyrin was observed. The antioxidant activity of skyrin was compared with that of known antioxidants as emodin, dipyridamole, vitamins C and E in different assays as also in the lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that skyrin scavenge reactive oxygen and free radicals species in a comparative grade that emodin, vitamin C and E or dipyridamole.

Ciencia e investigación agraria , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-16202010000200002
Abstract: the bark of pinus radiata d. don is recognized as a rich natural source of proanthocyanidins (pas). barks of pinus radiata d. don were extracted to produce a raw extract, and then purified to produce 4 fractions, with the aim of correlating its structural characteristics with the extract antioxidant capacity. the structural characterization was performed by acid catalysis in presence of phloroglucinol, foliowed by the detection of the components by high precision liquid chromatography (hplc). the subunits identified in the bark of pinus radiata were: epicatechin- (4?-2) - phloroglucinol (ec-p), catechin- (4á-2) - phloroglucinol (c-f) and (+) -catechin (c). the purified fractions showed different mean degree of polymerization (mdp), average molecular weight (amw), concentration and reaction yield (r) with phloroglucinol. the concentration of total phenols decreased according to the order in which the fractions were eluted. all the fractions presented a high antiradical activity (evaluated as scavenging capacity of radical dpph>). nevertheless, the fraction fu presented the greatest tannin concentration and antioxidant activity. the structural characteristics of the extract of pinus radiata d. don bark could be correlated with the antioxidant activity of the extract.
