Sociology Mind (SM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2011.14029
Abstract: Marian devotion and rituals have been the apex of Christian believers’ journey for centuries. In spite of its importance in many disciplines, Marian devotion and rituals in Israel have been neglected. In this article I will outline several social and religious aspects of Marian devotion in the Greek-Orthodox community in Israel. Using several case-studies of Marian devotion around the world I will address the question is Mary a national symbol in Israel? Since one of the most important Marian devotion sites is located in Israel and centered in Mary’s place of ascension in Gethsemane, addressing this site directly is crucial. I will express a new concept more fitting to the Israeli case—Mary as an a-national symbol. This research is based upon a combination of two main methodologies: participant observations and in-depth interviews with believers (local Greek and Palestinian residents as well as pilgrims) and clergymen. The research focuses on a procession taking place in the Old City of Jerusalem in the end of August, celebrating Mary’s legacy and resurrection.
CAM and Cell Fate Targeting: Molecular and Energetic Insights into Cell Growth and Differentiation
Carlo Ventura
Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine , 2005, DOI: 10.1093/ecam/neh100
Abstract: Evidence-based medicine is switching from the analysis of single diseases at a time toward an integrated assessment of a diseased person. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) offers multiple holistic approaches, including osteopathy, homeopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal and energy medicine and meditation, all potentially impacting on major human diseases. It is now becoming evident that acupuncture can modify the expression of different endorphin genes and the expression of genes encoding for crucial transcription factors in cellular homeostasis. Extremely low frequency magnetic fields have been found to prime the commitment to a myocardial lineage in mouse embryonic stem cells, suggesting that magnetic energy may direct stem cell differentiation into specific cellular phenotypes without the aid of gene transfer technologies. This finding may pave the way to novel approaches in tissue engineering and regeneration. Different ginseng extracts have been shown to modulate growth and differentiation in pluripotent cells and to exert wound-healing and antitumor effects through opposing activities on the vascular system, prompting the hypothesis that ancient compounds may be the target for new logics in cell therapy. These observations and the subtle entanglement among different CAM systems suggest that CAM modalities may deeply affect both the signaling and transcriptional level of cellular homeostasis. Such a perception holds promises for a new era in CAM, prompting reproducible documentation of biological responses to CAM-related strategies and compounds. To this end, functional genomics and proteomics and the comprehension of the cell signaling networks may substantially contribute to the development of a molecular evidence–based CAM.
Sequence determinants of protein aggregation: tools to increase protein solubility

Microbial Cell Factories , 2005, DOI: 10.1186/1475-2859-4-11
Abstract: In the last decade, protein aggregation has moved beyond being a mostly ignored area of protein chemistry to become a key topic both in medical and biotechnological sciences [1]. The biological significance of protein deposition has been shown to be much higher than formerly thought. First, because the presence of insoluble protein deposits in human tissues correlates with the development of some debilitating human disorders of growing incidence such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, type II diabetes and the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies [2-4]. Second, because it has been shown than under cellular stress conditions, such us severe heat, massive protein misfolding exceeds the buffering capacity of the folding quality machinery and results in the aggregation of proteins, which usually results in cell death [5,6]. Finally, the use of bacteria as factories for recombinant expression is limited by their intrinsic tendency to accumulate the target protein into inactive insoluble aggregates, called inclusion bodies (IBs). IBs are dense, amorphous protein deposits that can be found in both the cytoplasmic and periplasmic space of bacteria [7-11]. In fact, the formation of IBs is the main bottleneck in protein production, narrowing the spectrum of relevant polypeptides obtained by recombinant techniques and hampering the development of top priority research areas such as the de novo design of novel proteins, the rational modification of natural proteins or structural and functional genomics. The rising recognition of the crucial significance of protein aggregation has resulted in a number of recent reviews [12-19]. This review focuses mainly on the role played by intrinsic polypeptide properties in protein aggregation.One should distinguish between precipitates, in which proteins maintain the native folded conformation and aggregates, in which proteins adopt new non-native structures. The first type of self-assembly is generated during random precipita
Euclides da Cunha e a República
Ventura, Roberto;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141996000100024
Abstract: the revision of the republic is a central concern in the works of euclides da cunha. it appears in his newspaper articles and in most of his books. he analysed the republican regime not only in os sert?es (rebellion in the backlands, 1902), in which he deals with the canudos war, but also in contrastes e confrontos (1907) and in à margem da história (1909). he both witnessed and interpreted the trends of the new regime which he had helped to set up with his political articles in the newspaper a província de s. paulo.
Ventura, Roberto;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701998000400008
Abstract: euclides da cunha addressed himself to two regions considered inhospitable to man: the backlands of bahia and the amazon jungle. in 1897, he wrote articles about the battle of canudos for the o estado de s. paulo, publishing os sert?es in 1902. after exploring the purus river in 1905, he composed the essays on the amazon collected in contrastes e confrontos (1907) and à margem da história (1909). in his writings on these regions, cunha uses images of the desert to characterize both jungle and backlands as territories not yet explored by science.
Abstract: this paper proposes a comparative analysis of the struggles for recognition through the hip-hop and graffiti cultures in rio de janeiro and s?o paulo. it focuses on the tensions created by the search for social inclusion, the criticism toward segregationist social relationships and the appeal of market-driven visibility. it also analyzes how subcultures construct an order of recognition and how they are appropriated and interpreted in the public sphere.
Abstract: a literature search was conducted on the medline database, for the years 1996 to 2004, to collect published articles correlating hiv infection and adherence. thirty two article were included; we limited to articles in adult human subjects (aged 18 or older) and when the major objective was to determine the prevalence of non-adherence treatment in hiv patients. this review examined adherence definition, study design and methodology, subjects characteristics and measurement of adherence. the barriers to optimal adherence were organized in three major groups: a) social and psychological factors, b) factors related with the disease and c) factors related to treatment regimen. most studies used a categorical definition of adherence. by far, the most frequent used methods were interviews and questionnaires. the study designs were primarily prospective and most commonly in hospital-based settings. man were prevalent in most samples. in most studies adherence was incomplete and difficult to achieve. social-economic factors, as lower income and lower educational level were negatively associated with adherence. depression, lack of motivation and complexity of regimen were also related with poor adherence.
Depress?o e comorbilidade: um caso clínico
Revista Portuguesa de Clínica Geral , 2011,
Abstract: introduction: the co-existence of depression and chronic disease is frequent. this association leads to a worse evolution, of both the psychiatric framework and the chronic disease. however, the depression diagnosis is not always evident and even when it is identified correctly it is often under-treated, either for reasons imputable to the doctor or due to the patient?s poor adhesion to the therapeutics. description of the case: maria frequently attends medical appointments complaining of dizziness, tinnitus, fatigue and bone and joint pains. the identified health problems include entities with a potential aetiological role in these symptoms, which are overvalued by the patient. however, the latter complied only irregularly with the pharmaceutical therapeutics and kept lifestyle detrimental to the control of such health problems. after multiple appointments of similar pattern she admitted, upon questioning, irritability, anhedonia, tendency for social isolation, hypersomnia and depressive humour, which she attributed to her physical aflictions. after several attempts to introduce anti-depressive medication, which the patient waived a few days later, alleging side effects, medical appointments at fortnight intervals resulted in a better compliance with the therapeutics, both anti-depressive and other, less complaints and better control of her chronic diseases. comment: the emphasis on the somatic symptoms and the fact that they could be explained within the context of the patient?s co-morbidity, therefore withdrawn as criteria of depression suspicion, led to the masking of the latter over time. the doctor must always consider the frequency of depression associated with chronic diseases, in order to achieve better diagnosis acuity. the inclusive approach, accounting for symptoms that are irrespective of being explained by the coexisting pathology, lessens the risk of not diagnosing an oligosymptomatic depressive framework, notwithstanding the fact that it may generate
Ventura, Tereza;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782011000300012
Abstract: this article reconstructs honneth's theory on the recognition of moral and social imputability and its complex articulation in identity formation and conditions of struggle. we look at the interrelationship between community of values and the moral conditions of juridical relations. in other words, ideals of justice and the criteria social groups employ in moral evaluations of their social milieu are more present when disrespect is felt than in terms of a rational critique of reigning principles. the challenge posed here asks whether these zones of normative conflict are able to gain visibility and inquires into the potential to articulate and coordinate a social struggle that can integrate semantic, symbolic, material and immaterial means going beyond the emotional and moral networks of daily transit and able to resist political cooptation or inadequate public translations of desires for recognition.
