Effect of chromium enriched fermentation product of barley and brewer’s yeast and its combination with rosiglitazone on experimentally induced hyperglycaemia in mice

Abstract: Introduction. In the recent years, herbal preparations have been more used to treat diabetes. Dietetic supplement based on barley and beer yeast enriched with chromium (BBCr) is registered in Serbia as a supplement in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Objective. To investigate the effect of the preparation based on barley and brewer’s yeast with chromium (BBCr), rosiglitazone (R) and their combination (BBCr+R) on fasting glycaemia and glycaemia in mice after glucose, adrenalin and alloxan application. Methods. The animals were divided into three groups: glucose 500 mg/kg (I); adrenalin 0.2 mg/kg (II); and alloxan 100 mg/kg (III) and into subgroups according to the substance they received (BBCr: 750 mg/kg, R: 0.75 mg/kg and BBCr+R). Each animal was its own control in respect of glycaemia before and after the treatment with test substances, except for group III which contained a placebo subgroup. Results. BBCr caused a significant decrease of fasting glycaemia and significant reduction of glycaemia after glucose load compared to the values before treatment (7.4±0.6 mmol/l vs 9.2±0.6 mmol/l; p=0.01). R and BBCr+R significantly decreased glycaemia after adrenalin load (R: 8.6±1.8 mmol/l vs 15.4±3.2 mmol/l; p=0.004; BBCr+R: 9.6±2.4 mmol/l vs 15.0±4.4 mmol/l; p=0.04). After alloxan application the glycaemia was significantly lower in the subgroups treated with BBCr, R and BBCr+R compared to placebo subgroup (10.1±8.0 mmol/l vs 6.8±2.7 mmol/l vs 13.5±9.7 mmol/l vs 24.5±4.7 mmol/l; p=0.001). Conclusion. Pretreatment with BBCr caused a significant reduction of fasting glycaemia and glycaemia after glucose load. Rosiglitazone and BBCr+R caused a significant reduction of glycaemia after adrenalin load. Pretreatment with BBCr, R and BBCr+R prevented the onset of experimental diabetes caused by alloxan, which was confirmed by histological analysis of pancreas tissue.
The Protective Effects of Silymarin against Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity and Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Abstract: Silymarin is a complex of five major compounds, and silibinin is the most biologically active component of the complex. The aim of this study was to investigate, evaluate and confirm the potential cardioprotective and hepatoprotective effects of administration of silymarin, rich in silibinin, at a dose of 60 mg/kg orally for a time-span of 12 days on doxorubicin induced toxicity in male Wistar rats. The in vivo model was used to explore whether silymarin could prevent damage of liver and heart tissue induced by doxorubicin administered every other day at dose of 1.66 mg/kg intraperitoneally for twelve days. In the study the change of body weight, ECG changes, biochemical parameters of oxidative stress, serum activity of alanine and aspartate transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase and histological preparations of heart and liver samples of treated animals were examined. According to physiological, pharmacological, microscopic and biochemical results, we confirmed that at the examined dose, silymarin exhibits a protective influence on the heart and liver tissue against toxicity induced by doxorubicin.
Hypoglycemic Effect of Herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D)

Abstract: Herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), a synthetic auxin which promotes uncontrolled plant growth is widely used. The aim of our study was to investigate, using an experimental model, the effect of herbicide 2,4-D on liver function tests, enzyme a amylaseand glucose blood level. BALB/C mice were treated i.p. with the herbicide (30 mg/kg 2,4-D) for four consecutive days. Twenty-four hours after the last injection, the treated and the control animals were weighed and sacrificed for biochemical analysis: haematocrit,glucose blood level, serum activities of enzymes alanine minotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, and a amylase, as well as liver reduced glutathione.Herbicide 2,4-D significantly decreased glucose blood level in mice. There were no changes in liver function tests or activity of enzyme a amylase. In this study on mice we confirmed the results obtained in the previous study, which showed a hypoglycemic effect of herbicide 2,4-D on agricultural workers. To elucidate the mechanism of this effect, a further research is needed.
Strength analysis of filament-wound composite tubes

Abstract: The subject of this work is focused on strength analysis of filament-wound composite tubes made of E glass/polyester under internal pressure. The primary attention of this investigation is to develop a reliable computation procedure for stress, displacement and initial failure analysis of layered composite tubes. For that purpose we have combined the finite element method (FEM) with corresponding initial failure criterions. In addition, finite element analyses using commercial code, MSC/NASTRAN, were performed to predict the behavior of filament wound structures. Computation results are compared with experiments. Good agreement between computation and experimental results are obtained.
Do chromatin changes around a nascent double strand DNA break spread spherically into linearly non-adjacent chromatin?

Abstract: In the last decade, a lot has been done in elucidating the sequence of events that occur at the nascent double strand DNA break. Nevertheless, the overall structure formed by the DNA damage response (DDR) factors around the break site, the repair focus, remains poorly understood. Although most of the data presented so far only address events that occur in chromatin in cis around the break, there are strong indications that in mammalian systems it may also occur in trans, analogous to the recent findings showing this if budding yeast. There have been attempts to address the issue but the final proof is still missing due to lack of a proper experimental system. If found to be true, the spatial distribution of DDR factors would have a major impact on the neighboring chromatin both in cis and in trans, significantly affecting local chromatin function; gene transcription and potentially other functions.

Abstract: The posterior communicating artery (PCoA) arises from the cerebral part of the internal carotid artery and reaching the interpeduncular cistern unites with the posterior cerebral artery, marking the beginning of its post-communicating part. We accidentally found a case of an unusual origin and termination of the right PCoA associated with a presence of the right olfactory artery remnant in a 35-year-old male cadaver routinely dis-sected at Institute of Forensic Medicine. Presented vascular variations have not been reported previously in the literature. In the event of PCoA origin from the right middle cerebral artery normally developed from the cra-nial end of primitive internal carotid artery, as well as the PCoA junction with basilar tip, this PCoA could be the most cranial carotid-basilar anastomosis. Simultaneously, here presented right olfactory artery remnant could be the third variant of this persistent embryonic artery.
Modelling and optimization of the surface roughness in the dry turning of the cold rolled alloyed steel using regression analysis

Abstract: surface quality of the machined parts is one of the most important product quality indicators and one of the most frequent customer requirements. the average surface roughness (ra) represents a measure of the surface quality, and it is mostly influenced by the following cutting parameters: the cutting speed, the feed rate, and the depth of cut. quantifying the relationship between surface roughness and cutting parameters is a very important task. in this study regression analysis was used for modelling and optimization of the surface roughness in dry single-point turning of the alloyed steel, using coated tungsten carbide inserts. the experiment has been designed and carried out on the basis of a three-level full factorial design. the linear, the quadratic and the power (non-linear) mathematical models were selected for the analysis. obtained results are in good accordance with the experimentally obtained data, confirming the effectiveness of regression analysis in modelling and optimization of surface roughness in the turning process. the general conclusion is that the surface roughness has a clear downward trend with the cutting speed increase and decrease in the feed rate and the depth of cut.
Evolve or perish: a theoretical proposition for development of the Bildung concept

Abstract: The contemporary idea of Bildung is in danger of becoming a concept of mere historical significance as its content is poorly elaborated upon in terms of underlying processes. The main aims of the present paper are to (1) argue that this concept must evolve by specifying its content or perish from contemporary use in educational settings (2) present a model of Bildung which builds on a combination of current global educational movements and basic adaptive psychological processes common to all people regardless of their diverse backgrounds. The present conclusions point in the direction that Bildung, if sufficiently outlined, might be of significant importance for future educational contexts by providing an overarching perspective in terms of values and clear directions in terms of practice. The theoretical and practical implications are also discussed along with the possible limitations of the current analysis.

Abstract: This paper presents the algorithm and results of a computer program for calculation of complex equilibrium composition for the high temperature fossil fuel combustion products. The method of determining the composition of high temperatures combustion products at the temperatures appearing in the open cycle MHD power generation is given. The determination of combustion product composition is based on minimization of the Gibbs free energy. The number of equations to be solved is reduced by using variational principles and a method of geometric programming and is equal to the sum of the numbers of elements and phases. A short description of the computer program for the calculation of the composition and an example of the results are also given.
Education of surveyors in the field of real estate market valuation: Present situation in the Republic of Serbia

Abstract: Education of surveyors in the Republic of Serbia has a long tradition. The first higher education in the field of surveying in Serbia dates since 1808, when the Belgrade Higher school was founded, while the first activities in the field of surveying measurements in Serbia dated to the end of XVIII century, when Geodetic service of Austro-Hungarian Empire started the survey at the northern part of Serbia. That was the time when surveyors had only technical skills, but due to changes in a country and society as a whole, nowadays, we have completely another picture about this profession. This paper will focus on education of surveyors in the field of real estate market valuation and benefits that this knowledge gives to them. State educational institutions recognized the importance of these skills, so it will be described the curriculum of those institutions, together with the changes in a society that had a great influence on changing surveying profession. Main focus will be given to subjects dealing with real estate market and real estate market valuation on Belgrade University College of Applied Sciences for Civil Engineering and Geodesy, together with Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, University of Belgrade.
